Unusual decks: 2020

I'll start. This one is pricey, but there's obviously a lot of work behind it and it looks lively, like it might be a fun deck. One of the creators is a circus performer, so I'm sure that lends an interesting perspective. There's only three left, so if you want it, act fast:

Created and designed by by artist, poet and clown R. Campbell while touring the world with Cirque du Soleil And Teatro ZinZanni in North and South America, Europe and Japan.

Here's another deck that relates to the circus, but it's the sideshow.
I don't think I like this one. It's not that it's ableist or offensive: this is a very real part of history, and people with various disabilities weren't always able to draw checks. There was no choice but to find work, and this was often the only work they could do. (I fear we may be heading back to that if our legislators aren't stopped.) So yes, we shouldn't look away from things like this, and the concept could make a very incisive Tarot.

When I was twelve, there were still remnants of this kind of thing. A small carnival came to town, and there was a tent advertising a "mermaid girl", complete with a banner featuring a woman with a fish tail. And I knew it was BS, but like everyone else I paid my coin and went in to see what the deal was. There was a rather pretty bottle blonde, makeup on point and defiantly vampy-glam, with tiny folded arms that they said were "fins". Thalidomide? I don't know. But she was sitting in a chair, not looking at any of us (I don't blame her) and there was a man brushing her hair. I admired her grit. And I felt ashamed that my face had been in that crowd of gawkers.

I saw that ONCE. But that kind of thing used to be "normal". Let's not forget that, and how easily we could collectively descend to that level once again.

So yes, it's not something to be ignored. The subject matter is not the issue I have with it. Rather, my issue is the keywords printed on the cards, many of which defy logic.
It's just not a very good Tarot:

My advice? Give this one a pass and wait for a better one.

And in the meantime, we have this film. Sadly, it ended Tod Browning's career, but I don't see it as horrifying at all. Those sideshow people really had each others' backs! Anyone with friends like that is fortunate indeed. 💓

@katrinka... The Tarot of Why is amazing! I wish it was a touch more in line with my budget right now, as I'm looking for a new deck to distract me from the lockdown blues. And is that a tin I spy in the pictures? I LOVE tin boxes.

One of the more unusual decks that I've come across is the Body Language Tarot. I believe it may still be on pre-order, and the creator is waiting for a minimum number of orders before it can be produced, so there may be a small wait before it is received. It's on my list of desired decks.

Indeed it is. They did this up really nice! 😁

That's a great concept, and I don't think anybody's done it until now! It looks well thought out. The tattoos, the haircolors...everything is for a reason. 🥰

She did the Idiosyncradeck, IIRC. I am fond of that, too.

The Why is fascinating - but the price hurts - postage on top would put it way above $100 - and then there's customs. :classic_sad:

I find the Tarot of Why unusual, and the metal case is a nice addition.

Nevertheless considering its price the cardstock could be premium, but isn't: "Each deck is printed to order on quality card stock (300 gsm matte) ..." 300 gsm is standard.

My opinion no more.

At least with customs (and I would be beyond the limit myself with this deck too), this allows to really wonder if we want the deck, enough to pay a tax.

Personally my answer would be no.

Otherwise there are sellers who know how to deal the best way with international shipping, but we can't ask because I guess they can't clearly answer on that, so it is the surprise when the deck arrives (and not necessarily a good one).

Has anyone seen anything of this one - apart from the picture of the front of the box?

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Tarot-Light-Shadow-John-Matthews/dp/1786784114

Apparently two decks in one - so 156 cards. I like the work of this artist ( the person who did "Lost Code of Tarot for Lo Scarabeo)  - but will this be yet another deck with pictures of John and Caitlin Matthews in?

Oh, card pics!! Thanks so much @gregory I've been wanting to see some pictures for ages.

I'm...interested? I like the artist's style, even if it IS a pips deck. Tempting. I don't know that the monochrome cards do much for me, though. Maybe I'll just scare up his other deck instead.
