Moon phase vs. day of the week in spell timing?

Recommended Posts

Hi beautiful Wiccan folk. Wondering which is a more important consideration when planning the timing of a spell—best moon phase vs. best day of the week.

Say for a love spell, Friday is best, but if Friday falls on a new moon, is it best to wait for a Friday in a more favorable moon phase?

Or a dark spell, best on a new moon but the new moon falls on a Friday, is it best to wait until the next new moon?

definitely moon phase. The calendar and seven day week are artificial and reasonably modern, the moon is ... not.

Thank you! I suspected this, very good to know.

I should add, I'm a sort of eclectic, not a Wiccan, and can't claim any authority whatsoever, but I feel the logic is pretty clear on this one.

I'm not Wiccan, but I think it depends what is most significant for you in your practise.

For me personally, I'd go with the moon phase as that is significant for me.

But someone else might prefer the weekday method if it fits better with their practice/beliefs.

But, that said, you could look up when it's favourable in both moon phase and weekday.

The other thing I was thinking... maybe the day does matter for human things, too. Perhaps that influences your own sense of power and the ability of others to be influenced, due to the pressure of the work week or the promise of the weekend... especially if it's something that needs a bit of time.

Also there's the tradition of the Sabbath which has been around for a long time so... yeah, there's a bunch of rationales for days of the week, too.

Ok, this too! Thanks.

Good spell for me, is suitable to perform during the waxing period, because the moon is increasing in its illumination, it attracts. The sign of horoscope during that day of the spell casting is significant.. I don't look into which day of the week.

Ah, thank you! Good point. I would have to find out how to look up the horoscope phases during a day.

I use this reference when family members are deciding on medical procedures (where they can be scheduled rather than an emergency).

Do you prefer paper or app/digital? Maybe people can suggest an almanac or ephemeris they have found most helpful.

You can also look into “renaissance astrology” and how the planets cycle through the hours of the day and of the night.

Wow, thank you! Digital is fine, I'll take a look at these links. Very informative!

Interesting question! I do take the moon phases into account for many things, but I believe that the most important thing in order to have consistently powerful results is to be able to interpret signs. That’s how you know what needs to be done, how to do it and when to do it. It’s also how you know that something should be left alone. I think this is the oldest way of performing magic. Different practitioners will experience signs in different ways. I was brought up to notice the behaviors of birds. I believe that’s fairly traditional. For me, most signs come from studying nature. We did notice the lunar phases but it wasn’t that every full moon meant something specific, it’s more that I pay attention to things that are out of the ordinary and energy that is stirring beneath the surface. The weekdays have never meant much to me personally. I think you’ll probably need to experiment and figure out what works for you.

(Edit: I should probably have pointed out that I’m not Wiccan! )

Very interesting, thank you!

Several times I have had a crow cone right up next to me when I'm on my deck, and "speak". Not a "caww", but just vocalizing. And yesterday one flew straight to a tree near my deck and cawed insistently for a bit, but eventually another crow answered it and it flew away. I've wondered what the crows meant.

It would depend on the 'mood' or the impression you got. Often we can sense an atmosphere. I feel like crows can both be chatty in a good way, but also be eager to caution you about something. I would bet that if you contemplate it, you will be able to recollect the subconscious/primal impression you had in that moment.
