Hello everyone, I'd like to discuss here the core meaning of the 3 of Wands.

I know we can consider it as the entrepreneur card, that is you invest your money in something and wait for the results, you hope your investment will pay off at the end.

My question is: if you get this card as outcome, could you interpret it as an investment that pays off? Or this card leaves open any options, also a failure?

Thank you so much.

I'm assuming this is RWS? If so, the 3 of wands as an outcome could be indicating more needs to be invested into a situation.

One of the meanings that Waite gives is "effort" which fits with the idea of more needing to be invested.

Thank you @akiva, yes it's RWS.

I understand what you mean and I agree.

Hi @November

Are you referring to the upright card?  (Do you do reversals?)

Upright
I quite like the upright Three of Wands. When I get it, it usually means validation.  The project has begun to bear fruit, and you are awaiting results which are expected to be favourable.  A message with good news regarding the project might be on the way.  Success is at hand, but outside support is still needed, and new ideas are still coming in.

Cultivate patience.  This is the card that indicates you've put a project into action.  It's got beyond the planning stage, and you're making it happen—but what happens next?  This isn't a card of completion, but it's a very very good start.  Things are running smoothly, but there is still some way to go.

You might be connecting with people or issues at a distance ...overseas, etc.  You are at the top of your game, and are now delegating tasks and responsibilities. These people may be at a distance as well.

I would not read the upright card as a failure of any kind at all.  You're on the right track.  But it's not a final outcome either.

Reversed
If the card is reversed, it's not a disaster, but it means you might have missed something important.  It's a good idea to refer back to the 2 of Wands (the planning stage) and revisit the decisions you made then.  You may have bitten off more than you can chew.  You might have started too late and are now playing catch-up, or have already lost out to the competition.  Perhaps outside support or finance has been withdrawn, or is not forthcoming after all.  You may need to re-think your strategy in the light of new information or changed circumstances.

Procrastination may have caused—or will cause—problems—possibly permanent problems.  Avoid a tendency to micromanage, but don't just sit there ...ensure things are actually getting done. This is not a time to delegate responsibility and leave others to get on with things.  Stay on top of the situation yourself.

The reversed card could indicate initial failure, or at least the necessity of starting over or making some changes.

However, the reversed card can also simply mean that progress is stalled, through no fault of your own—and will pick up later on.  Again, cultivate patience if this is the case.

When reading the minor arcana I consider the numerology along with the story.  Wands is the suit of the mind or mental pursuits and communication.  If the reading was about the client's business interests, the 3 of Wands as an outcome could indicate a potential investor or partnership but not the outcome of the partnership or investor.  I would encourage due diligence in considering the alliance.

With the Aces (1) we plant a seed, have an idea and start something new, with the 2's we get into the details, plan and get organised. We make decisions (or not) and progress on from that 1. Now at 3's, we are going! This isn't where you get a conclusion or an outcome because it's a 3 not a 10. But this is initial success and achievement. This is the first time you can see progress and get some early results as a reward to keep going. This card specially if often called "waiting for the ships to come in". In RWS and many card images, the ships are on the horizon! So the trade business plan here is underway, they haven't reached the port yet and docked but we have a sign! Things are underway. Patience is needed for further success and completion.

So an entrepreneur maybe makes some long-term investments, they researched it fully and went for it. This is the first results coming in and this year they have good dividends, so their plan has success but they leave the investments in for the long-term gain for more rewards! They feel good because they have an initial success or pay off but then what? It looks positive, we can see the trade on the horizon and more opportunities and we can see no obstacles or storms at sea. But we don't know everything and there is a 5 card coming along after a 4 and other numbers to get through before that 10. At the moment, the future looks good and this investment looks good, we can't guarantee the future but should be pleased to see this progress right now.

I see this as the "hurry up and wait" card.  Be patient because you have a wait coming but look at the guy----he's dressed for success all clean and tidy, got his ducks in a row, and he's not taking a nap---not even sitting down.  He's standing at attention, being very much on alert and ready to see whatever is coming his way.

Hello @Chariot, thank you so much for your very exhaustive explanation.

No, I don't use reversals, so I have to consider the 3 Wands reversed meaning too and actually this one applied to my situation.

Thank you again for sharing, it all makes sense now.

Thank you @ljmack! Yes, I agree, it's what I'm doing.

Thank you @Grizabella, I see myself in this description, it adds up.
