How do you fund your Tarot habit?

This is an interesting discussion.  Now that I don't have money anymore, I try to get a deck with the money I earn from readings.  That means I don't get hardly any more decks!

For those of us who collect: how do you fund your habit? And I'm not necessarily talking about the heavy hitters who routinely invest in rare decks, I mean the other average schlubs like me who simply love to acquire new decks.

I've funded most of my purchases by selling other stuff, whether on eBay, craigslist, or the few odd decks here in the trading forum. I find that I'm running out of saleable items, though, and I plan to keep all the decks I currently have. Unfortunately, there are TONS of decks just out, about to come out, or about to sell out that I really want to be able to get. I could really use some quick cash-raising ideas, LOL, plus I'm curious how others feed their habit.

So, what about you? (And if you're independently wealthy, while not really helpful it's certainly interesting, so feel free to share that info as well.)

I am not ashamed to admit that I fund my Tarot habit through creative bookkeeping aka financial self-delusion....

You may take that seriously or tongue in cheek.  I'm not sure myself.

Me three! X-D I got the Everyday Enchantment for my own birthday last month with money I got from a reading. It's the best buy I've ever made in Tarot, I do have to say.

I don't really have a Tarot habit anymore. I didn't think the Everyday Enchantment was going to really appeal to me when I first saw all the scans. Poppy's Waking the Wild Spirit has always been a special deck for me but this one sort of seemed too modern or something.

But when I got the deck and looked through the book, I was totally bowled over. I don't know if I'll ever need another deck because this one is so comprehensive. There are a few I'd still like to have but I feel no need for another reading deck on a permanent basis.

During this last year I have downsized my belongings and sold a lot of miscellaneous stuff that I no longer needed or wanted. That brought in some money that I’ve set aside for fun things - like decks. I guess it also comes down to priorities for me, I don’t spend any money on things such as magazines, movies or movie tickets, fast food or soda (but I do buy sweets and chocolate sometimes). We don’t have cable and we don’t have Netflix. I also only buy shoes if I actually need a new pair (I have no fancy shoes and no high heels ones because I don’t need any and can’t walk in them), I don’t buy gym memberships and so on. I only really spend money on things that I have to spend money on or that I enjoy spending it on. I am a crafty person but I try to use whatever material I have in hand. And I limit myself when it comes to new hobbies.

Living on an island helps tremendously. Everything has to be shipped in, it takes ages. There are very little to no temptations here. So I am safe

For me it is mainly gift certificates I get for X-mas and my b-day, as gifts if I am asked what I want, and maybe a deck if I get a bonus at work.  Trading is the other avenue.  I do hope to sell some decks I am ready to part with in the new year, that money will also be ear marked for decks and crystals.  I admit I do not lust after decks like I used to, and have moved on from the impulse deck buying both of which are good for my wallet.

My main job (the muggle job) and my moonlighting venture (my small online cartomancy shop).

Basically I'm a user and a dealer.

I don't buy deck much anymore. I've cooled off quite a bit. I'd say, one every two months, maybe. I'm a custodian, so my main funds come from that. Every paycheck I set aside 50.00 to spend on whatever I want for fun. I've gotten a couple of decks that way.

Christmas and birthday money from my Evangelical Christian relatives.  :))

~giggles~ mine comes from my very Catholic relatives, and I can tell you my mom is freaked out by Tarot.  When I lived with them for a period I had my bookshelves full of decks and deck/book sets and one day she finally approached me about it.  So I told her how they are pieces of card board with lovely art that help me think outside the box.  That they are not religious or blasphemous, etc.  I then took out the Tarot for Cats (Majors only deck) as she loves cats and I figured if she could potentially relate to any this would the one, and she did crack up when she saw the cat running away from the vacuum cleaner in the Tower card ~chuckles~.  She has not brought it up or mentioned it since, nor have I, but we both know I am still very much into Tarot all these years later .  She does not ask what I do with the gift certificates, I just show her the clothes and things that she can related to and I we do not talk about me getting tarot decks with it.

Yes, I was that way once when I was still working... but now that I'm retired I put a set amount aside every month, for when I feel an urge coming on. If I don't have it - I actually don't spend it. I also drop loud hints around Christmas and birthdays.

I'm kind of with Grandma here!  I've been on a bit of a buying bender since September when my interest got serious.  I have... ten decks, I think, including the Animal Spirit Guide oracle deck I bought yesterday.  Plus a fancy pendulum and supplies for making my own as well.

Frankly I have more than enough variety to meet all my needs at the moment and now is a good time to take a breather and slow down.  I've been justifying my purchases since Christmas as well-earned gifts to myself since I did work really hard over the season and my husband (loving as he is) is not a gift-buyer.  But I'm not earning as much now and buying more decks at the moment would just be for 'pretty'.

Thanks for making me reflect on this!

LoveLightPeace

I fund 'most' of my tarot habit with money that I earn helping out at my friend's metaphysical shop, and selling items that I make on consignment there.

My husband will usually buy a deck for me, for Christmas or my birthday if he knows that I want a specific deck, which is really nice.

I try to buy only what I really like. And I don't like so many decks....I can view lists of hundreds of decks, but .... I don’t like anything....

This saves me from big expenses. ;D

I would like to buy one deck (wishlist for today), but....250 euros.... ::)

Well, I've spent about £30 on Tarot in 20 years, so I think I'm OK.  ;D

However... I'm definitely not immune to the collecting bug, with stamps (of a very specialist sort) being my secret vice. The golden rule is not to spend more than you can afford to do without. The silver rule is that I only buy things where I know I can sell it again for just as much (if not substantially more) should the need arise. Although it's the investigation and having them that gives me great pleasure, I know at the back of my mind that it's also genuinely an investment, because I don't buy randomly. Basically, treat possessions as things that are resting with you for a while, rather than being permanently yours. I always think that we're curators rather than owners.

I do have a separate little collection that is purely for pleasure, but that's more than counterbalanced by the potential sale value of the other. It would probably be the same with Tarot decks: I'd buy either ones that I found at affordable prices (in flea markets, etc.), or a few (very few!) decks that really struck me as ones that I actually wanted to use. I do have a very short list of ones that are tempting in that way... but I think I want to master one deck first.
