Interpreting The Coat Cards of The Suit of Coins Using The Sequential Method

Recommended Posts

The sequential method is a method of fortune-telling with tarot cards that is intended for the fortune-teller who would address certain specific questions concerning the past, the present, or the future by attempting to describe actions, circumstances, and events that may correspond to fact, whether at the time of a reading or subsequent thereto.

When using the sequential method, which is intended for use with pattern sheets that are comparable to the Tarot de Marseille patterns, one is able to interpret coat or court cards with relative ease.

A note on the general procedure for the use of the sequential method: when using the sequential method, one arranges a variable number of cards in one or more rows and one generally attempts to pair consecutive cards by attempting to relate one or more of the nounal significations of the first card in a prospective pair to one or more of the adjectival significations of the second card in the prospective pair. Where one is unable to form a contextually relevant or logical phrase by doing so, one would attempt to relate one or more of the nounal significations of the first card in the prospective pair to one or more of the nounal significations of the second card in the prospective pair. Where one is unable to form a contextually relevant or logical phrase by doing so, one would attempt to relate one or more of the nounal significations of the first card in the prospective pair to one or more of the verbal significations of the second card in the prospective pair.

For example, since the ace of coins is associated with the noun activity and since the ten of batons is associated with the adjectives captivating and habitual, one could interpret a pair that comprises the ace of coins preceding the ten of batons as denoting one or more captivating activities, as denoting one or more habitual activities, or as denoting one or more activities that are both captivating and habitual.

1. Additional Coat Cards

Though one could apply the sequential method using the standard number of 16 coat cards per pack, one could enhance one’s tarot readings by purchasing two copies of one’s preferred tarot cards and transferring the knights and the jacks from one pack to the other so as to have each additional knight and jack serve as a female equivalent of the corresponding knight or jack.

To avoid confusion, one could mark each additional knight and jack using a pen or a felt-tip marker.

I hereinafter refer to each additional knight as a dame and to each additional jack as a maiden.

2. On the Position of an Impersonal Significator Relative to a Personal Significator

2.1. Where a personal significator precedes an impersonal significator, one could attempt to relate one or more of the verbal significations of the impersonal significator to one or more of the actions that are carried out by the person who is signified by the personal significator.

For example, one could interpret a pair that comprises the king of batons as a personal significator preceding The Pope as denoting a male lover who asks, who devotes, or who trusts.

Similarly, one could interpret a pair that comprises the king of batons as a personal significator preceding the queen of batons as an impersonal significator as denoting a male lover who expects, who gratifies, or who loves.

2.2. Where an impersonal significator precedes a personal significator, one could attempt to relate one or more of the verbal significations of the impersonal significator to one or more of the actions that are not carried out by the person who is signified by the personal significator.

For example, one could interpret a pair that comprises The Pope preceding the king of batons as a personal significator as denoting a male lover who does not ask, who does not devote, or who does not trust.

Similarly, one could interpret a pair that comprises the queen of batons as an impersonal significator preceding the king of batons as a personal significator as denoting a male lover who does not expect, who does not gratify, or who does not love.
