FindYourSovereignty
Deck: Beneath The Moon Yoshi Yoshitani First Impressions: At first glance the card seems kind of simple. Which is often how some would interpret a fool. The school of fish appear to be jumping in an effort to capture the Fool's attention. You can see her passionate desire to move forward like she is actually going to fall in she so strongly wants to pursue her dream. Step 0: I open myself to all possibilities. Step 1: The name of the card is: The Fool Step 2: A literal description of the card: A pale yellow circle of the moon or the sun radiates pale peach concentric circles to the cards edge. There are nine white birds flying in the upper left corner. The upper right corner, centered in the pale yellow circle of the moon or sun, resides a pale peach castle seated at the top of a dark coral mountain. At the bottom of the mountain is ocean water with visual rock peaks poking out of the water. There are seven reddish orange school fish jumping alongside the Fool's ocean rock perch. There is a display of water splashing where one of the fish is jumping back into the ocean. The Fool, a mermaid, is perched on the left, atop an angled rock peak. Her arms at full length holding herself up; she is facing towards the right; gazing intently off into the sky. Long black hair cascades down her bare back and is adorned with a red starfish above her right ear. She is scantily clad in shades of light and dark teal scales merging into her mermaid tail. The seven colors in the card include: shades of peach and teal, yellow, charcoal/black, white, orange/red, red. Step 3: Emotions / feelings / attitudes of the figures, and mood / atmosphere of the environment: I sense stubbornness, determination, single-minded focus, desperation from both mermaid and the school of fish. The castle being glorified in the background as some far-off distant dream taunting one to be discontent where they are and to then work really hard climbing the mountain as all the goodness is really up here where you of course want to be. The water in this card feels very accurate to me as I often feel that we act our most foolish and do the craziest things over unrequited emotions. Step 4: “Once upon a time…” The Little Mermaid, Denmark Danish Fairy Tale This deck was created around fairy tales, myths, folklore and, although I definitely see the relationship here of her actions, I am disheartened by the actual fairy tale as she doesn't success in her efforts and ultimately, instead of having the opportunity to shift gears she dies because the person that she loves doesn't love her back. The fairy tale isn't, imo, the most motivating to walk out in a leap of faith or to trust that all will be well regardless of the outcome. Yes, I am someone that believes all things happen as they are supposed to and that it is our perspective that makes it a good or bad thing, however, this tale could use its own discussion and in some ways has turned me off from reading the tales that were chosen for each of these cards. Step 5: The number 0 is about: All that is and all that can be; infinite possibilities; all or nothing Step 6: The suit / element / mode is about: Air Care-free, moves with the wind, free-minded, blows seeds to a new location, whispers of sweet nothings far and wide Step 7: Synthesize Step 5 and Step 6, and smooth them out Dreaming about all that can, about all the possibilities, starts this energy that ultimately demands being able to move with the wind, creates an independence of mind, body and spirit that lets one bravely, or foolishly, go off on a path of the unknown. Step 8: Name some metaphors She tosses all caution to the wind. Stepping into uncharted waters. Step 9: Ask open ended questions - how, what, when What kind of person are they: impetuous, adventuresome, foolhardy, fearless, free How did they get here: boredom, itch for something more, discontent, temptation What do they want: adventure, something new, passion, to see the world, experience life at all levels Where are they going: everywhere and no where Your responses, and snapshots that arise in your memory: graduation, getting married, moving away from home, space travel, serving in the military, having children, speaking to an audience for the first time, performing Step 10: Book meanings "The Fool rests on the pinnacle of a decision. She is ready to dive out of her subconscious and into the physical world. To transform from an animal into a human. She is care-free and excited by a new life, regardless of warnings." Step 11: A range of meanings from benefits to liabilities Where I am now? stuck, craving something new, different Where I want to be? somewhere else; sometimes anywhere else. How do I get there? leap of faith, courage, trust, bravery. Step 13: Symbols - list the symbols on your card, and their meaning fish - harmony, happiness, knowledge, transformation ocean - vast, wide, boundless mountain - challenge, heights, obstacles castle - dream, reward, safety, wealth, sovereignty, power, Kingdom of Heaven birds - flight, freedom, endurance, starfish - strong, magical, resourceful, regenerate Step 21: The Possible Self - Create an affirmation from the card. If the card is traditionally a difficult card, change “bitter truth” to “fruitful opportunity” I am free to step into my dreams and trust the flow. Rupicapra
Right, here we go: The Morgan Greer Tarot (I got quite distracted by thinking I maybe should choose another deck, the Margarete Petersen actually crossed my mind, so did the Shimmering Veil, just because they are a bit ... arty-er, but I'm sticking with my MGT, I love how traditional it is and I think this is the one I'll still be happy to work with in ... a year and a half????) Description A young person is walking forward, towards the left edge of the card. They are wearing a white tunic with green leggings under a black robe with red trims. Their hair is blond, with a green laurel wreath and a big red feather. Their facial expression is neutral, their eyes look straight forward into the distance. In their left hand they carry a cut wooden branch as walking stick as well as sprig of a white rose, one blossom opened and another bud still closed. In their right hand they carry a similar stick over their shoulder, with a heavy orange hankie bundle tied to it. By their left side is a white dog walking with them, jumping up, tongue out. In the background is the sun in the top right corner, a bright yellow sky, blue mountains in the distance. Just behind the Fool there are some dark brown rocks and a cliff edge. Story "Are you ready Tin-tin?" the Fool asked the little white dog by his side, although the question was really directed at the Fool themselves. After taking only a short moment to ponder, the Fool continued tho talk to the dog "See this beautiful pure white rose? The one flower is fully opened, the other is just about to flower. I have to go and find some water for it, so that the second flower can open and blossom as well. There'll be water somewhere behind the cliff, and I will find it. I cannot let the rose dry out. I have to admit, Tin-tin, I'm not sure I am ready for this. But hey, what's the worst that can happen to me? I got my bundle with my toothbrush and pocketknife, I know I'm as prepared as can be right now for this step. It might be a rough ride, the cliff is high, but the sun is shining, the air is clear, and it is a good day to make the first step. Off that cliff... Right Tin-tin! Let go of my sleeve now, it's ok, don't you worry, have a little faith in the universe, and don't look down! Look forward. It's a new chapter, a new adventure. You have to take risks sometimes, you know? Else you'd be static and never get anywhere in your life. The universe gives us all those possibilities, but they are not just handed to us, we have to be active and take them. There's no need to be wild and reckless, but there is no point in standing still either. There is only one way to find out what the second rose may reveal once she blossoms. Scary as it may be, I am ready. Deep breath, and off we go!" Symbols Laurel Wreath - Creativity, Cleansing, Protection, Peace, Protection, Achievement Red Feather - Vitality, Liveliness White Roses - Purity, rosebud = sprouting growth white dog - faithful companion, domesticated, white, black, red, green clothes - innocence, purity, transformation, life-force energy, passion, hope, spring Cliff - abyss, unknown Range of meanings reckless - over cautious smartass - naive irresponsibly daft - too serious, joyless Metaphors/Quotes "The knack of flying is learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss." - Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy "The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step" - Lao Tzu "Have a bias toward action - let's see something happen now. Rupicapra
Aaaaw I'm so enjoying this! It's amazing to read everybody's stories, so much info! I'm thrilled to see what decks are chosen - yeah it is difficult! And it is great to see the different ways we "write our own books"! Great idea to put the one card out on the desk, I'll be doing that from now on.

The Fool is at the beginning of Human life - he has been given Human life at the cost of being separated from "God" and a purely spiritual existence. Why would he want to suffer the separation of his soul being forced into a mortal body? I wonder if we (as this Fool Spirit) don't do this in order to learn just what it means to be mortal. To learn what the physical and emotional feelings are in order to better understand what our Spirit has. We learn about love, pain, beauty ... and even sneezes, so we can grow more as the pure Spiritual beings we are. Do these experiences and lessons make us more well-rounded as spirit beings? This "fall into matter" aspect is interesting. I didn't include it in my Fool writeup since I'm coming from an "in a reading" perspective rather than a contemplation angle, but it is something to ponder (though "the separation of his soul being forced into a mortal body" can definitely be considered a danger!) I think you can see different thoughts about it in various decks. The RWS Fool simply isn't paying attention, he's bumbling off the cliff. The Thoth Fool looks manic. He's functionally insane. Neither is making an informed decision, by my lights. The Bardo Thodol blames it on desire: "O nobly-born, at this time thou wilt see visions of males and females in union. When thou seest them, remember to withhold thyself from going between them." One slip and we're inhabiting a meatsack for a lifetime, lol. But who knows, really? Whatever it may be, there's foolishness involved. I think that's why the card concept works so well. 😊 Edited September 3, 2020 by katrinka

First, I am very impressed by all the scholarship he Brought to the card, and you brought to your analysis. But my thought, looking at the Fool, is that he is too peaceful, too static, too much at rest. He is like a nice sturdy reliable Knight of Pentacles. Where is his Foolish energy? Yes! He does lack that playful naivety often associated with The Fool. Although, I wonder if was intended to express that blank slate of potential. A lot of the energy/emotion/story is taken from the plethora of symbology rather than the artwork itself. Though I can imagine creating a Tarot deck would really test the skills of an artist to their limit - perhaps Godfrey Dowson hit his with this deck. It's hard to know whether to read a card as you see it, or as per the artist's intent... in which case, what was the intent?

Though I'm not familiar with it so I can't be as critical on the finer aspects of how it fits in the greater deck. I like how small The Fool is in relation to the rest of the imagery, almost like the character itself is secondary to the movement of the water and air. It provides a feeling of empty chaos that I really enjoy. @FindYourSovereignty... Yours in a very different Fool indeed! They really play on the water element there - not a very 'traditional' fool but very interesting. And pretty. 😊

In a box spread, the card diagonally below and to the right should be considered as well. The card directly below might be what the Fool “stands on” – how solid is it? The card to the left might give some clues about “the dog”. Above, what’s on the Fool’s mind, and diagonally above and to the right in the sun position, what blinds him. Use only if relevant. Fascinating and interesting information to consider when relevant. On 8/30/2020 at 4:31 PM, katrinka said: The Fool is often said to be a force of nature, blindly moving ahead. One example would be a man sneaking in a lover’s window. If caught, he may well be killed by her husband or father. But, as old Joe Campbell said, “This is the species talking.” Not the individual. Nature considers the individual disposable and mandates the creation of a new generation. Such forces can override common sense. So many things to think about - this is a great example that made it clear to understand the additional insight from Old Joe Campbell.

They are said to be at home in the 8th House, where amongst other things – intuition is increased, ‘psychic’ abilities, and clairsentience more specifically which is fitting for the emotive water sign. This fits the idea of the Fool being a card of introspective, ‘feel-your-way-through’ the enigma that is the physical/nonphysical veil of pure potential. Interesting. 14 hours ago, Gardener said: @Grace - now that I've worked out my own personal dilemma, I've been wanting to reply to your comment about your Hermetic Fool. WildPlace
Deck - The Wildwood Tarot Card name - 0 The Wanderer (Corresponds to RWS The Fool) First impressions: A young person, could be female or male, stands on the edge of a cliff looking down into a misty ravine. There is a rainbow forming what looks like a bridge and the person is just about to step out onto the rainbow to pass to the forest on the other side of the ravine. There seems to be a face in the forest on the other side of the ravine that looks like The Green Man, there is also another partial face which I think is The Ancestor. The forest looks almost impenetrable though i'm pretty sure that like most forests, when you arrive there you will find faint pathways that you can follow through the trees. I think there is definitely a sense of innocence portrayed in the artwork. From The wildwood Tarot book Upright: Blind faith. A blank slate. The Inner Child. The leap in the dark. Following your heart. The seeker after knowledge or truth. The primal impulse. A vision of illumination that pulls you forward. Images and Symbolism Young person Rainbow Mist Deep ravine Forest Animal skin clothes and accessories Waterfall Two faces in the forest opposite Light shining from beyond the trees A river flowing through the scene Traditional meanings (taken from an old RWS LWB): Upright: Folly, mania, extravagance, intoxication, delirium, frenzy, bewrayment (I had to look up the meaning of this!). Reversed: Negligence, absence, distribution, carelessness, apathy, nullity, vanity. My take: Having been there in that position - just about to step off into the unknown (I had told my grown up kids "i'm off to follow my dreams kids even if they turn into nightmares") - I would probably say in a reading "go for it, sometimes you just have to trust the process/inspiration/idea, it may not turn out as you expect and there will be twists and turns as you go but close your eyes, trust and step forward." Riimukissa
This was a tough choice between my two favourite decks but I chose the one that I am not quite as connected to. I am hoping to do both of my favourites starting from next week and hopefully catch up with the other Fool later. The Fool Deck: Forest of Enchantment Name of the card: 0 - The White Hart Description: A white deer is standing at what seems to be an edge of a forest, mist swirling and sparkling at her feet. The deer is looking straight forward towards the viewer. Behind him are different kind of trees. Some of the trees have flowers and berries. The main colour of the card is green. First impressions: It doesn’t look that this card has too many symbols in it. I like that the artist has otherwise put much details to this one, though. This is definitely not the usual kind of Fool but I think it still represents quite well the purity and the beginning of things, the hart standing in the entrance of the Enchanted Forest. Meaning at a glance according to the guide book: A new beginning. Accepting the invitation. Going forward with trust. The journey begins. Follow your instincts. Symbols: Apple tree – the Otherworld Oak – endurance Ash – action Hawthorn – protection Fir – perspective Willow – Intuition Holly – challenge Hazel – wisdom White hart – the Otherworld is near, quest, extraordinary adventure, Christ in Christianity White – purity, otherworldliness Pursuit of a white hart represents mankind’s spiritual quest. In European folklore white harts draw adventurers deep into the forest where the margins of the Otherworld lie. As we follow him along our life-path, we should remember that the path we follow is as important as our destination. King Arthur and many others try to capture a white stag but it can never be caught. Even though it’s uncatchable it should be pursued nevertheless. Traditional meaning: Upright: beginnings, innocence, spontaneity, a free spirit Reversed: holding back, recklessness, taking risks Numerology: 0 Unlimited potential, infinite possibilities, no beginning and no end, nothingness, beginning of a spiritual journey, being on the right path, heading towards the best version of yourself Numerology Link: None of and all of the other major arcana cards The suit / element: Air Air is the element of intelligence, creativity, and beginnings. Astrology: Uranus Uranus is associated with enlightenment, progressiveness, objectivity, novelty, and ingenuity. Negative expression of Uranus is rebelliousness without a cause and irresponsibility. Contrascarpe
I’m still not sure what format I’m going to use for this study. Probably going to just go “in the moment”. Back when I used to read at our little metaphysical shop, I found myself doing stream of consciousness readings. Now with close to 15 years of dealing with deeper psychological ideas, I’m looking to see if my readings evolved. My chosen deck is the quirky Phantasmagoric Theater Tarot. I don’t recall ever reading with this deck but looking at it now, I’m interested to see how deep it is. The Fool is strongly based on the Rider-Waite imagery. This particular Fool is taking his/her/their step into the unknown along with their trusty dog. But this little puppy isn’t by their side. Instead it is in front of them, and facing our jester waiting in anticipation. The other striking part of this card is that the Fool is not stepping into the unknown abyss. They are stepping toward a safer route, probably the same path they took to the apex. Finally, the duality of their facial features can indicate many things. In a reading, I would be tempted to indicate someone NOT taking chances. In fact, I would see this as a positive. Clearly the dog is waiting for our fool. This would tell me that this is not the time for major decisions, that a solid plan is required and that loved ones may need this structure. At the same time the conflicted imagery on the face shows that it is ok to have some individuality. This could also be an indication that there are some gender identity themes going on. 6xscorpio
The Mythic Tarot 1) Name the card - The Fool 2) Literal description of the card - The fool, Dionysos, has emerged from his cave. It is dawn and the sun is rising over a barren desert valley. He wears unfinished furs for clothes and and ivy wreath upon his head. Above him at the mouth of the cave is a bare branch upon which is perched an eagle. Dionysos is rosy cheeked and looking off into the distance toward the rising sun, seemingly oblivious to the fact that he's walking off the edge of a cliff. 3) Emotions/Feelings of the figures and Mood/Atmosphere of the environment - Dionysos, in both facial expression and body language exudes joy, happiness, joliness and excitement. The eagle above Dionysos is more serene, stern and observant. The environment on the other hand is barren, devoid of life, dry and lonely/alone. I read this juxtaposition to mean no matter how exciting or thrilling this new project or chapter is, at this stage you are still an island into yourself. Whether you take those first steps successfully or fall on your face, you're going to have to rely on yourself to do it. You are alone and will prevail or founder on your own merit. 4) Brief myth of Dionysos - God of wine, fertility, ecstacy and madness. Son of Zeus and human mother Semele. Hera, jealous and angry at Zeus' infidelity contrives to kill Semele (and her unborn child) by maneuvering Semele to request audience with Zeus in all his glory. Upon Zeus' appearance Semele is struck and killed by lightning, but Hermes rescues Dionysos and delivers him to Zeus. Dionysos is ordained to live among men and share their suffering. Hera strikes him with madness and he is bidden to walk the world until Zeus calls him to Olympus and bestows godhood upon him. Keywords & Phrases - Trust your instincts, Boldly go, Youthful exuberance, I don't know where I'm going but I'll know when I get there, Look before you leap, Mindful of surroundings, Unlimited potential 13) Symbols and Meanings - Eagle: This is the symbol of Zeus, Zeus is watching over Dionysos, but not getting involved. Birds in general often represent freedom or lack of restriction. Cave: Emerging, transition from darkness to enlightenment, leaving safety/safe haven for the unknown. Rising sun: Masculine/yang energy. source of light, heat and life. Birth off a new day. Path: Represents a journey, in this case a long one. Interestingly, we don't see the beginning or end of the path as at this point the journey hasn't begun yet. We aren't on the path, we're in that limbo time at the start of a race where we're set to go but the gun hasn't gone off yet. Cliff: Pitfall, struggle or obstacle, danger or the need for observation or care. From the book: The goat's horns on the fool's brow suggest, like the animal skins he wears, that he is like a young animal, driven into life by instinct, not yet conscious or possessed of understanding. ~ Sharman-Burke
Hemera
Mermaid Tarot (by Leeza Robertson, Julie Dillon, Llewellyn 2019) The Fool Description:A young Mermaid is rising from the waves like Aphrodite and walking towards the beach. Her mermaid tail is transforming into scaled legs. She is excited and curious, ready to learn new things. It looks like she has never dared to venture this far before. Book meaning:Time to explore new things, places, people. Set a course for somewhere you have never been or start learning a new skill. Be adventurous, take a chance. Symbols:White dress – white is the color of neophytes (such as a wedding dress, Christening gown etc) Walking stick and a green bag – Green and brown are colors of nature, colors of the Mother Earth. What is inside the bag? I think probably she has been left something to eat for the day she will spend on land. Feels like Mother Earth is welcoming her with the wooden stick (I like to think it is oak) and the green bag. The tiny stars everywhere show how magical this scene is but also mixing the definition of day and night. This scene can be either or both. Time is irrelevant. Open ended questions - how, what, when:I think she has been curious for some time and has been approaching the shore for maybe days or weeks. And suddenly when she gets close enough to the shore her tail transforms into legs. I do not think anything other than curiosity is her driving force. There is no prince in her story -not yet anyway. Maybe she is in some of the Cups later, though ? Or maybe it is another mermaid? I am not sure yet. But now when she is coming to land for the first time it is just out of curiosity and excitement. She has no specific goal. She is young, inexperienced, excited, ready for adventure. Embodying the card:I immediately remembered how heavy it always feels rising from water to land. Water is no longer supporting you when you enter a new element. Her rising on land needs special effort especially since this may be her first time on legs. It is not the same as dropping or walking down from a cliff as many other Fools do. She is foolish to venture on land but she really has to want this and has to make a big effort to get on land. Notes: At first this card seemed a bit bland. Where is the dog/animal in here? Until it suddenly struck me. The is no animal/pet in this Fool card because SHE is half the animal herself! She contains all the intuition and instinct she needs within herself. She has constant contact with the whole instinctual and archaic animal world. She has never been separated from it like so many humans are. I absolutely love this idea! She is out of her element, out of her depth (!), which is potentially dangerous. She should be careful and watch out. Edited September 22, 2020 by Hemera

I didn't want you guys to feel ignored, but in the interests of keeping my sanity I won't go into too much detail tonight. I'm very excited to see everyone's cards and thoughts. It was only a few weeks ago that we started with The Fool, but I'm already enjoying revisiting the earlier submissions while contemplating the Aces. We have a really good range of decks here! Lady Butterfly
Right, here are my Fools. A little late, but whatever... Today, I will start with the Faery Wicca Tarot The Seeker Cuardaitheoir (koor-day-door) The Card Itself: Looking at this card, we see a multi-faced character. Every face seems to be looking down a separate pathway. He/They carry all their belongings in a sack on a stick. There appears to be a black feather blowing around in front of him. At his feet, there are several faery-folk who seem to be vying for his attention, or perhaps they are suggesting the right path for him to take. In the distance we see a stone ring, which I believe signifies one of the faery cities. There is a rock on the ground at one of the intersections, it has a marking on it, perhaps giving direction. There seems to be a sunset sky in the distance. From the LWB: The Amadan-Dhu, sacred fool of faery, has perhaps called to you. Time to visit the wilderness and reconnect with the soul of nature. A new journey is at hand, one that will guide you down the pathways of the Faery. A true initiation is at hand, but first you must enter the labyrinth of the mind and find your heart. All that you need in life you already carry with you. Let spirit guide you. Observations: Looking at this card gives me a feeling of confusion! I don't feel the naivety of the RWS Fool at all. This guy feels like he is being pulled into a million directions. It feels like everyone wants his attention and to make him do things their way. The bag he carries with him makes me feel like he is trying to make his own way in the world, but all these other influences are pulling him to go their way instead. This feels like peer pressure! Perhaps the message is, as the LWB says "You must enter the labyrinth of the mind and find your heart". Then, we move onto the Tarot of Pagan Cats. The Fool The Card Itself: We have a cat on the edge of a cliff, chasing a butterfly. He is thinking of a nice soft pillow and a bowl of milk. The sun is shining down on him and the cliff is covered in flowers. Beneath the cliff appears to be water. From the LWB: This is the moment before the first step is taken. You may have an idea of where you want to end up, but you have no idea how to get there. Reversed: Making a foolish choice. Observations: This is a sweet card. It reminds me of my very own familiar who is smart, yet easily distracted and disastrously clumsy! He manages to get himself into all manner of situations because he doesn't think it through, and often ends up stuck in/on, or falling off of things. This card gives me that 'look before you leap' feeling. Things may be exciting, and you may want to get going, but just take a moment to look a little more carefully at what you are doing. Yes, the goal is important, but how you get there matters too. In comparing the two cards, the journey undertaken by the Seeker of the Faery Wicca feels like a more serious endeavor. The Cat Fool seems more playful and excited. However, you can't help feeling that both could end up in peril.
