Althusser
I am trying to find the artist, publisher and name of this deck. Can anyone help me?
gregory
Sure: It seems to be Meng Xiaojing's "Broken Mirror Tarot" https://goods.ruten.com.tw/item/show?21905765010657 I haven't tried to buy from there, though... It might show up on ebay in time.
Althusser
Thank you!!!!! I will check out the link and research the artist☺️. If I try the website I will let you know if I have a good/bad experience.🌼
gregory
It seems to be a sort of ebay site, and the deck failed to sell (but google translate on sites like that is a bit shaky !) ALSO I found another site where Meng Xiaojing is referred to as a writer rather than an artist, and seems to have a museum ? http://www.tarotcollectors.com/view_topic.php?id=1676&forum_id=3 He wrote the test for the Fantasyland deck... https://www.alchemywebsite.com/tarot/database/record527.html

Althusser
Wow, I’m going to have to research the translations for these sites, especially for currency and actual price. At least it seems I have a little time to do proper due diligence before taking the dive (like purchase security, international tariffs/fees, etc.). It’s a good thing I love the hunt.😉 I am so grateful for your knowledge - usually it takes me months to find the first crumb when I start with so little info🌷. I am facing for joy right now.💃🏻
gregory
Well don't hold your breath. The thing is affordable - £33 or so (though I don't know about shipping) but I simply cannot register to buy it :( And the chat doesn't work. ETA ooh ooh I have found an email address. The name of this deck, in traditional Chinese, is: 破碎鏡像塔羅. The English name is Broken Mirror Tarot. The artist is one 毛团团 (a pseudonym?), who self-publishes the deck under the imprint 海妖的风笛, ’Siren’s Bagpipe’, and whose personal blog is here: https://www.weibo.com/u/1646421310 A couple of video reviews (in Chinese) may be seen here: https://www.bilibili.com/video/av49567753/https://www.bilibili.com/video/av28554573/ There have been 3 different editions so far, with different colouration. It reminds me of the story of Atlas, although perhaps they have a similar story in China and this is a character from Chinese myth or literature? Is there a LWB to explain the cards, @gregory? gregory
Yes. It's in Taiwanese and English. But it doesn't explain in the way I think you would like. This is the closest I have found thus far: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pangu http://translate.chineseconnects.com/pan-gu/ https://www.crystalinks.com/godsupportworld.html Which is probably connected - but the artist may have just run with Atlas. If shipping is expensive (or if it has to come through a shopping service which has fees) I wonder if it might be worth considering a group order if there are enough people in one country interested in buying it. @D76 Do RWS fans go on threads about TDM decks and say stuff like "OMG, epic fail, LOL! Does it come with poker chips? Did you get a full house in that spread?" because that's kind of what your posts on this thread sound like. It also reminds me of King James Version Bible-only fundamentalist Christians who attack other translations as being "corrupt lies". You can just say you like the art but don't like the RWS system, and that's enough. People read oracle cards that aren't in either system. Some people read Yu-Gi-Oh or Pokemon cards. it's all good, IMO, we're all reading cards. If you don't like RWS as a tarot system, look at it like an oracle maybe. Words matter, but not THAT much. _R_
Here is a loose translation of the publisher’s blurb: “These cards are drawn in a fragmented style, and are in the manner of stained-glass windows found in churches. The themes of the cards come from Greek and Nordic mythology.” As I recall, there was a note in the LWB saying why the artist had chosen to base himself on the RWS deck, likely because it is a ‘standard’ of sorts. Niobium
A little thread necro, I hope no one minds. There's now a 4th Edition of the deck available. It comes with rainbow-silver edging, linen card finish, and a new box design. ebuy7.com, which is a Taobao mirror site, has copies available, but be warned this is roughly the equivalent of purchasing from random individual sellers on Amazon. Your mileage may vary. Shipping is typically charged *after* the fact, and the shipping types aren't well labeled for English, so I wound up getting FedEx Express. I guess that explains why the shipping was as much as it was! All of this said, my deck arrived in good order, complete with a thank you note in a wax sealed envelope and a little yarn fetish doll. Pricey in the overall, but about what I'd expect of an internationally-obtained personally published deck.
Grandma
@Niobium thank you! Would you be able to post a picture of the box and the description? I'm having trouble figuring out which deck it is. @_R_, @gregory - what do you know about this edition and this site? Are they legit? Thanks in advance if you can help. Love, Grandma
_R_
4 hours ago, Grandma said: what do you know about this edition and this site? Are they legit? Thanks in advance if you can help. There is a 4th edition just out, and you can see one Chinese reviewer has put all 4 together in this video here (from right to left, starting at 0:50): https://www.bilibili.com/video/av540314427/ decks There’s another review of the 4th edition here too: https://www.bilibili.com/video/av370252727/ I wasn’t able to find the proper link for the deck on the eBuy7 website, perhaps @Niobium will do the needful. I presume the deck and the site are legitimate, but it is best to try and read some reviews before ordering from an unknown site. The problem is that neither Taobao or Ruten (the Taiwanese equivalent) make it easy to order from abroad, which means going through a 3rd-party vendor. That said, there is a whole cottage industry of shipping agents who will do so, but the usual caveats apply there too. As it happens, I have a blog post detailing Tarot terminology in Chinese in the pipeline, and thought about following that up with some how-to instructions on buying from Chinese websites, but lack of time has prevented me from finishing that off for the time being.
