Starlight
I have a lot of catching up to do, @AfternoonTarot. I'm so sorry, RL has gotten hectic and I've had to pare down my time online. I will add in my thoughts on the weeks I've missed when I can.

AfternoonTarot
One of the ideas that Jung shares in this section is his belief that man needs to “cultivate thoughts that can never be proved” (and gives the example of religious beliefs) because they “are known to be useful” and they “will give meaning to his life and enable him to find a place in the universe.” I am deeply interested in meaning-making systems (which I believe Tarot is one), semiotics, and epistemology. I agree with Jung that we should ponder things that cannot be proved and that the act of trying to make sense of them in relation to the world gives meaning and a sense of belongingness. Jung then ties this to myth making and symbolic ideas, both powerful generators of meaning-making. Another interesting idea brought forward by Jung is what we have lost due to scientific advancement: “As scientific understanding has grown, so our world has become dehumanized...Natural phenomena...have lost their symbolic implications. Thunder is no longer the voice of an angry god...No river contains a spirit...His contact with Nature is gone and with it has gone the profound emotional energy that this symbolic connection supplied...”. I think this is true for some people, communities, and cultures but not all. I think scientific advancement has helped people in other meaningful ways, and that mindful individuals and cultures will retain this profound emotional energy regardless - we just may not be able to organize our lives around it. Thank you for this! Surrounded by Nature in Sandbanks Provincial Park I can clearly see and feel the living Nature all around me! Every Tree, every Rock has a Spirit, speaks and I am glad, I can see, and sense them all clearly. That this is so, has always given me a huuuuge advantage in working with people in general, with other Living Beings and particularly with patients 🙂 Many are "falling back into a world of myth and legends," often their own private ones, and following them there acknowledging, what is true for them at the time and supporting them, to connect this - their world to what society considers the "real world" is an important pathway to their healing and growth. :)
