Since I was able to start working on this card a couple of days prior to the launch, I have made a little bit of progress and I thought that I would take a deep breath and be the first one to post here. My card is the Explorer of Air (equivalent to the Knight of Swords). I am using traditional techniques - graphite and charcoal. And I am obviously not anywhere near done. But that IS the point of this thread after all, so... here goes!!

Whoa!!!! so much talent and truth in this card.  Why do I think that she is apart of your archetype in some shape, form or fashion?

Well I guess because she is 😉 Artists often portray themselves or parts of themselves without intention and knowing 😉

You are right, but it wasn't unknowingly or unintentional 😁. The biggest reason why I chose this card is because it is part of my personality. I have a special connection to crows/ravens and my personality can in some ways be just like I described. I just exaggerated my swiftness and my archer skills a wee bit

So I scanned my picture and had some fun with it. I wanted to see what it would look like as a finished card.

Here is a screenshot (hence the graininess) of what it looked like in printerstudios software:

The red line you see on the card marks the 'safe area'. Text and important details must be kept within that area. Its so cool to see what it could actually look like, it makes it all seem so much real!

Very small update, but I sketched in the actual bow and then begun working on her clothes. The shading is done in layers to make it more three dimensional so it will take a while to get it done. At this point I am blending graphite and charcoal to get different shades and contrasts. For those that haven’t worked with these mediums - graphite has smooth particles and therefore is shiny, while charcoal has rough particles that do not reflect light. I always use pure charcoal for the darkest areas - like the pupils and darkest parts of the shadows. I use graphite for light areas and for details made to imitate metal etc. And then I blend the two on a piece of paper and use a paper stomp (similar to a tortillon but smoother) to mix them and create middle. So the paper becomes like a palette. (Lighter skin tones is usually pure graphite). I then add white details back in with a pen eraser that I cut with a scalpel to make really sharp. That’s basically it, though hair is rendered a bit differently. Multiple layers with mixed techniques. The most important bit though is to not touch the paper with your bare hands - I rest my hand of a piece of printer paper. Hand grease will create areas that attract more color and you will never get a smooth result otherwise. Quick 101 😀

I can't wait! I'm bookmarking this thread in anticipation! I am so excited about this project. I wish I had graphic design skills so I could contribute a card, but  I don't so I will be everyone's cheerleader 😄 This deck is going to be awesome and it'll carry such a special vibe, coming from this amazing group of people.

Why don’t you make an old school collage or take a photo? Don’t pass up the opportunity if you want to participate! I would love to have your vision represented too!

totally agree with Raggydoll here @peacefulocean. There are various other options to make a card, not everybody needs to be able to draw 🙂

Thank you so much, those words really mean a lot to me!! I don’t have a website, I used to have a blog before I got kids 🙂. Most of my other drawings are portraits of actual people (or pets) so I don’t have permission to feature them online, and several are also not in my possession anymore. I did however draw some celebrities to be able to feature my skills as I was starting out. I might share them sometime. But I am soon going to start on my next card here so then you get to see more 😀

Yes we said 100 words per card. I am hoping it won’t feel too restrictive, I just feared that otherwise we would have a massive document that would be difficult to go through.

Yikes! I'll do my best... 😖 It turns out there are a few ideas in my card, so perhaps I'll have to use keywords instead of actually explaining anything,

I am so sorry I made it so strict, but you know what, I suggest we do this: we compile a pdf with 100 words per card as a LWB and then we offer a more in depth source here on the forum. So write a longer explanation too. I will add this to the main thread later today, I think it will be good because then people can write a really in depth explanation as well as a more to the point one. Sounds good?

I have begun working with Elder of Earth. This is of course a really early stage but the vision is starting to emerge.

These are some musings that came to me as I was planning this card:

This is the woman who listens to the voices of the mountains. She is fully in tune with the nature around her and she is guiding her tribe to a prosperous relationship with each other and with the land. She will listen more than she speaks and when she speaks, it will be from experience and with the greater good in mind. Because she knows life and she has seen all sides of it. She is now at a place where she has taken a step back so that she can perceive the bigger picture and channel the voice of the ancestors; the guardians of the tribe and of the land. This card will want you to think about what questions you really should be asking. (If any!) See things from a greater perspective and try to understand your place in it all. There is a sense of responsibilities and of heritage; to do what is necessary and to think of the long term consequences. This leader - this Elder - will give you courage and reassurance. She can help you rise to your potential and to fill the shoes that you were meant to walk in. But she will not cut you any slack.

(This picture was taken with a phone camera in a poorly lit room so bear with me!)

I've been drawing an initial idea of what I want the Wheel of Fortune to look like.  This is a concept drawing rather than what it will actually look like so excuse all my rubbing out that I didn't do very well!

I've picked a modern-looking spinning wheel (modelled on my own wheel) for the wheel itself to represent how we try to control our fortune ourselves.  When one spins, one learns to carefully control the wheel to make the outcome (the yarn) that we want and I thought that was a good metaphor here.  On the wheel will be symbols representing the tarot suites and I'm still working out what other symbolism I'm going to include here.  Around the wheel are going to be fairies, who are going to be spinning the wheel.  The fairies represent the unseen things that turn fortunes wheel for us and tell us that we can't always control our own fate.  The wheel naturally wants to spin in a clockwise direction due to the weighted beam across it (I modelled this on my own spinning wheel) and naturally wants to rest at a particular point.  The fairies trying to turn it also want to show us the possibly of change - what happens if we change direction, what happens if we find a different resting point?

I'm not sure what media I'm going to use yet.  I'm most comfortable with photos, so I might try a photo collage, but I might also try a drawing or a painting or something else.  Very much to be decided!
