Starting over (collecting)
« on: February 05, 2019, 08:36:32 PM »
Starting over, Now that I am settled, I have begun re-collecting tarot.

Years ago I had a extensive tarot collect, due to major life changes I gave it all away except for 5 decks. Some decks I miss and some decks I don't.

I am more careful with what decks I want now, picky picky. There will be ones I will replace over time, but there are ones that I can't due to fact they are now OOP, sad. Some days I regret giving my collection of decks away.

Have you ever been in a situation due to circumstances or life events that you either gave or sold off your collection of decks, then to find yourself years later re-collecting?

How do you feel about starting over, are you more picky, choosey, other, etc.?

This is not really the situation you're looking for, but when I was about 12, I received a tarot deck as a gift from my parents. I have no idea what has happened to that deck since - it could be hiding somewhere or I could have thrown it away.

Now that I want to be using tarot again, I put effort into choosing a deck that I thought was beautiful and interesting, the Linestrider Tarot. Unfortunately, the more I read about tarot online, the more I feel that a RWS clone would serve me better. Maybe I need to start collecting!

I haven't had that happen with the decks yet, but I did get rid of a bunch of boxes (to be fair, several of them were pretty thoroughly trashed anyway). It'd be kind of cool to still have the original packaging for my first deck, but hindsight and all that!

I am pretty bummed about losing several CD cases and liner notes in my last move. I still thankfully have the discs, but these were cases from overseas, and had the track listings and other cool stuff on them.

Back to tarot... I am pretty picky about adding to my collection. Which is good, since I've fallen hard for many of the TdM reproduction decks, and those tend to not be cheap! I'm still on the fence about getting "back-up" editions for my collection. Part of me thinks "maybe I can resell some of them," but the other part knows that I'd have a really hard time letting a beautiful deck go, even if it is a duplicate, so I can't really justify stockpiling :)

l feel for you Raven, l had to let a large part of my tarot horde go. Some l now wish l had held onto.  But those are now too expensive to buy again.

Then l had a bit of a spree with some decks which now sit unused gathering dust.  These l will let go of at some point WITHOUT regret.

These days l am extremely careful in selecting only those decks l truly feel would work for me.  l have the Visconti Modrone coming any day now and this is my one indulgent treasure, l say that because l probably will not be able to read with it  :))  but it is all gold and opulent.  Makes me feel like Gollum

I became totally overwhelmed a few years back and decluttered nearly all my Tarot collection but have since re-purchased the Thoth to join in with an exchange group. It's still very difficult though, I think it just has too much symbolism for the meanings to be clear to me :-[.

Oh poor you, l worked with the Thoth for a while and had some good readings with it. Then it decided to get all narky with me i.e in giving me all doom and gloom cards.
It probably got fed up with me not being a good pupil and learning all the symbolism properly
Still love it but do not use it so much now.
l prefer using the more intuitive tarot card decks.  By that l mean more intuitive for me to read.

I've been thinking about your post since it went up.
with various mental responses :)

Can you think of specific ones you loved? Without looking at a list?
Or are you wandering around ebay shocked at prices listed?

I re-sort my decks each January discarding the no longer loved ones.
That brings me to about 60 each time.
I've kept top 20 lists from the beginning, then top 10, and now I do a top 5.
Which has shown me, even with die hard favorites, taste changes.
Don't regret what is gone, savor what you now love.

And back up??? Eeekkkk, why would anyone? Welcome home, again!

In 2012, "the year of hell" as it is known in my family, I had to get rid of all my metaphysical things & cut off any contact with the friends I had made- trying to appease & hold on to a marriage (which did not last; he moved out in 2015 & the divorce was final in 2017). I made my way back to AT in time to make some re-purchases and my "home base" is a private forum where many of my dear online friends were still close-knit & willing to have me back.

After that trauma, I can't see myself paring down ever again.

I wouldn't say that I am pickier this time around, but I did have to prioritize due to limited funds. So far, the only deck that I don't think I will be able to find/afford is Lisa Hunt's Fairy Tale - so, I bought the Fool's Dog app. And I am on the watch for the companion book for the Whimsical.

I have been setting up timed rotations of decks to be sure I get to use every one. By the end of 2019, most of them will have had a turn.

I've never had a big sell-off of my collection, but part of my choice to never cull my decks stems from my childhood.

My mother, who was a closet alcoholic and (I realize now) quite probably bipolar, sometimes collected things, but would fly into raging moods and destroy them (as she did with her beautiful collection of glass and porcelain bells) or declare that she was making big life changes and give things away en masse (as she did with her stunning collection of many hundreds of Victorian-themed Christmas ornaments).

And every time she went through those purge-cycles, I was reduced to a scared, sobbing mess.

So . . . that's my long backstory about why, even if I woke up someday thinking "I should sell off 50 or so decks that aren't serving a good purpose in my collection," I keep them anyway :).

Annabelle so sorry to hear of your past history,  <3
l can quite understand why you are reluctant to part with your tarot collection.
l have managed to pare my tarot down to ones l still favour, but there are a few l need to move on which are gathering the old dust.

I would keep it to a minium. no more than 5 decks and focus on your feelings.
