Do you have more than one copy of the same deck?

Years ago, I had a fairly big deck collection, which included some repeats. But then I began to question my own consumeristic habits, and not only got rid of most of my collection, also parted with many extras as well. There are, however, a couple of decks I still own two copies of and I am struggling apply my non-hoarding reasoning to.

One of them is the "Moon Oracle", by John Astrop and Caroline Smith. I own one english copy of the 2nd edition (it has better card-stock and image quality) and one old Brazilian copy, which does not have a great quality. BUT it has something I have not found in any other deck: the BR publishers have actually taken the time to adjust the moon phases to match the Southern Hemisphere (down under the Moon phases look the opposite than the do in the Northern Hemisphere). And so I ended up with two copies of the exact same deck and it makes me kinda guilty, like I'm next in line for a "Hoarders" episode.

FYI, here's a comparison between the two decks:

Anyway, another one is the "Flower Speaks". I have two copies for no reason other than the fact it's OOP and I'm not sure if it will be ever printed again. But then again, I'll never read with the two copies so what's the point of keeping an extra? Ugh! And I also have the "Belline" - the French and the one published in Brazil. Geez. 🙄

Do you struggle with this as well? Which decks do you have more than one copy of and why?

(I know this is total "first world problems", I just don't want to feel lonely in my madness, lol)

I wouldn't call that Moon Oracle two copies of the same deck. They're different.
I have both standard and pocket/mini editions of a few decks. One for convenience and portability, one for a full experience of the art.
Or both a vintage copy and a newer cheapo copy that's not as nice, but I don't have to worry about beating it up.
Or more than one edition of some decks.
But the thing is, these are decks I really like. I don't have multiples of decks I don't use. The ones gathering dust are the ones that need to go, AFAIC.

I do have two copies of some decks.

It's when I thought that I will really use one particular deck, so in case I damage or loss a card (or if a particular deck will become OOP and so unavailable anymore) it would be a precaution.

For the Cigany Kartya I bought a second copy because I was afraid that the first one I purchased was a fake (the publisher modified the back) 🤪

But I don't pull cards all the time, am a gentle shuffler, very cautious, so the reason I do that is greediness I think!

I should be more reasonable and sell a part of my little collection (with all the extra I don't use). It's more or less planned, but didn't do it until now.

I have two copies of the Carta Mundi Brepols Lenormand.

When I ordered the deck, I had to pay a huge fee to have the cards sent via international courier. Carta Mundi messed up and sent the thing normal mail, then thought sending an identical copy of the same deck through the post would somehow make up for the error.

Oh, well, they're lovely cards, anyway.

Incidentally, despite not being able to read or speak the language, I ordered the French version, thinking that having the little poems in English would annoy me. Unfortunately, this meant the LWB was in French too. 😳

EDIT: I should add that it was not Carta Mundi as such, but the company that fulfils their orders.

It's rare when a LWB is great, and often they don't worth it.

Oddly, I have one copy of the Brepols Lenormand, but without the verses (I thought they would annoy me 😁 )

I have a few copies of the Mamanmiyuki TdM - it’s Japanese and not so easy to come by. I love reading with it though and would hate to find myself without it. Hence the extra copies.

I’ve also got two copies of Flornoy’s Noblet. One of them has had the corners rounded and is so lovely to use and shuffle - no more stabbing of the fingers. :classic_biggrin:

I have a few dupes in my second home, and also some different editions of the same deck. (Like a zillion assorted Smith-Waites.) But not as a policy thing.

I have duplicates 🙈 and I think about buying even more! If I acted on it more often, it would be a problem. You’ve inspired me to see how many I actually have.

I trim a lot of decks and like having a pristine copy as well “when it counts,” for decks that I actively use. And some duplicates came to me for free or as part of a trade (the case for my two Robin Woods, for example).

Also, I had a copy of my Deviant Moon Tarot stolen from my workplace before, so having a backup of that deck really came in handy. I was so furious about that!

update: i have the following duplicates among my decks.

- Robin Wood x2

- Wild Unknown x2

- ISIS TdM x4 (different editions)

- Thoth x3

- Trionfi della Luna x2 (different editions)

I have some - I think I have about 6 copies of Arthurian - different coloured edges and backs and so forth, but no real reason.

A few others that I like to read with - Cloisters, Druidcraft, Llewellyn, 1JJ.

Just didn't want to be without a favourite deck if it became too hard to find.

But not as a matter of course

Yes, I think you are right, they are not exactly the same deck. Also, I confess I'm a big fan of Astrop/Smith oracles because they are so unique and have such interesting art and ideas behind them, so maybe I should just accept it's a small collection and roll with it lol!

I generally try to follow a similar rule too, if only because having too many decks often distracts me from learning really well the ones I want to. Also, I don't like having clutter at home, goodness knows that I already have too many books and scarves and stones.

Thank you everyone who answered! I really enjoyed learning about the decks you have extra and why! It seems we do get attached to certain decks and don't like the idea of not having them, which I totally sympathise with. I had more than one deck stolen ,and some of them I was never able to replace again, so with the ones I really love make me somewhat paranoid. That said, I try to not have more than two copies, otherwise I easily spiral down a "need a replace copy for my replace copy for my replace copy..." logic that never ends and leaves me bankrupt. Decks have become quite expensive here. 😛

I'm glad it's not just me!

As far as oracles I only have duplicates of the Luman deck which is OOP.  The first one was a display copy I got at a store, when it got reprinted I bought a new copy.  Not sure why I have kept both as I do not use them, but they are small so why not! LOL.

Tarot decks that is totally different, I have some duplicates or different editions of several decks, but not many.  I ended up with two copies of the Cosmic Tribe when one of my cards had a printing error and I contacted the publisher to see if they could get me a card replacement and instead they sent me a whole new set!  I love the deck so I am keeping both copies.  The rest though are different editions of a deck, and in the case of the Magic Realist Press/Baba decks they make changes in some cards in the editions I have so I am keeping those as well.

I have to be honest ... I am a tarot hoarder though I dream of trimming the collection down to decks I use (any copies of those)😣  On the bright side I don't purchase many decks anymore just trying to enjoy what I have with an addition here and there if it is something I know I will like.

I don't think I have any duplicates but I have multiple editions of Baba Studio's Baroque Bohemian Cats and Bohemian Gothic decks.  And I love them all. 💓💙💛💚
