Thoth...Purple or Green Box..Is There a Difference....

Featured Replies

I have both the Thoth deck that copes in the Purple (Blueish) box as well as the Green box. In the former (& much missed) AT Trading/Selling thread that people would specify whether it was the Purple or Green box. I've never pulled the 2 out and went through the deck seeking a difference in the decks  but I wanted to ask… Is there a difference in to 2?

I thought the difference was just in their sizes?

I have a Green Box Thoth and it's huge and beautiful, perfect for study.

I don't have a Purple Box Thoth, but I had a regular-sized one that's included in a deck and book set by AGMuller.

They look and feel the same, tho I might not just be sensitive enough to feel any tactile difference.

I think it's mostly the difference in size. The purple box used to have 3 versions of the Magus card but the current version of it that US Games puts only only has the 1 Magus approved by Crowley.

I can't find the pictures now, but I think that one of the things people were interested in was the older AG Müller decks which were "made in Belgium". These were a larger format, 5 1/2 by 3 3/4 inches, had the multi-color cross with the rose on it and came in a dark blue box with the Magus on the front. If I remember correctly these went out of print several years ago and are quite sought after. The colors are a bit more vibrant and true to the original (again, from what I can remember from discussions). I recall that there was much discussion about one, or both of the US Games editions because of a greenish cast to the cards which was quite noticeable on the borders (the AG Müller editions had gray on tan borders, where the greenish ones were gray on green) but all of the colors on the images were affected.

I searched the ISBN on my copy and found this page on Amazon; https://smile.amazon.com/Swiss-Crowley-Large-Troth-Tarot/dp/0880794690/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1508487414&sr=8-1&keywords=isbn+0-88079-469-0

As you can see, they are a bit pricey nowadays. (It is considered the "Swiss" deck because the publisher, AG Müller, is based in Switzerland.) I am not completely certain about all of these details, other than the fact that the AG Müller edition in the dark blue box is one that was a preference for a lot of people when it was available. But, this could be what you were remembering as being the more desirable one.

I thought some of the green box onces were a bit greenish at some point? Either way, I find the text on the purple version easier to read.

Yes, I think the general green-tone was an issue with an earlier printing from the 80's or 90's! The current printing by USGS don't have that issue. I just wish the cardstock was a bit thicker to match the deck.

If i recall correctly, the one that was usually referred to as the "Greeny", did not come in a green box. i am pretty sure it was a white box. i believe it came out in the 80's...

As peeps have already mentioned--The one that comes in the Green box is the large sized deck and the purple is a standard size. i am going by memory, as it has been a while since i have had them in my collection. xox

The only difference i recall is that one of them or perhaps both?--had 3 different Magus cards.; i don't remember which edition that was...but i don't think they have the 3 magus' included any longer, if i recall correctly...

P.S. My particular favorite Thoth was the AGM one--mine had a cobalt blue box, i think. The deck had wonderful color printing and really nice cardstock. [printed in either Switzerland or Belgium]

Cool! Glad you found this EmpyreanKnight! Very informative, thanks!

The so-called Greenie comes indeed in the white box, as MoonGypsy pointed out, but some of the large green box Thoths do have a greenish cast, too. I have one of those. Not as green as the white box ones can get -- I remember gregory posting once a picture of hers, and it was BRIGHT GREEN ALL OVER  :o  -- but definitely (and firmly) on the green side.

When the green box first came out there were a few greenies left in stock, kinda and they were the ones that turned up sold that way.

Yes, my greenie is scary green - and is sadly missing a couple of cards; it came with one missing, so when LeFanu said he was missing one card, I sent him one. He says it stands out from his greenie like a sore thumb :D. Wanna see ?

I have a less green one where they are all there.

Gosh, those are, ugh... even greenER than I remembered them...  :o

Yep Gregory ... those are green! Greener than what I remembered! LOL.

You're welcome, Trogon! Got that link from the Thothies in the old AT lol.

Hey, I didn't know that! Thanks FLiz. The cards in my large green box doesn't have a green cast, altho since I only bought it this year I guess that's to be expected.

I guess this is a prime example of turning a deck's flaws into something desirable. It looks so tempting!

gregory[/member] graciously provided me this saved pdf version in another thread when I commented how the page (in the link in the quote above) is no longer available. I'm just re-posting it here so that everyone who's interested can read it too. Thanks again gregory!

I have the AGM Mueller version, if recollection serves me the differences were that the AGM Mueller version had more vibrant and beautiful colors and includes the Unicursal Hexagram card.  I also have the standard sized version that comes with 3 Magicians, that one also has beautiful vibrant colors.

I have both the regular sized purple box and the large green box from US Games Systems and at least in the purple box I got those cards as you posted, Jewel[/member]  ^-^ I've been curious about the Urania (I think this is a name change for AGM Müller?) editions but I'm not yet such a hardcore Thoth-fan that I've seen a reason to get them since I'm happy to have the larger size for details and the purple is nice for readings.
