New topics in subforums not shown in "Recent Posts" sidebar

Featured Replies

Finally, something I actually MEANT to post in Assistance & Suggestions!  :P

I am wondering how many people use the "Recent Posts" sidebar on the left-hand side of the page to check on the latest posts? I know there is an option to hide the sidebar, but I use mine and usually find it very helpful to quickly look at what's been going on in the forum.

However, I notice that the posts linked there as "Recent Posts" are only posts made in the main forum sections, not in the sub-sections. In other words, anything that is posted in one of the nested sub-forums seems to not show up in this side bar. For example, anything posted in one of the Tarot Study Groups (which are all have an individual sub-forum) or even Oracle Exchanges (nested under Oracle Decks) does not show up in this side bar as a recent post.

I wonder if not seeing these recent posts in the sub-forums can affect how many members see these posts. I know for myself, I use the sidebar a lot, and I have sometimes missed things that don't show up there. For example, I think my recent Oracle Exchange offering actually got MORE interest because I accidentally posted it in the wrong section  :-[ and therefore the posts in that thread were showing up in the Recent Posts sidebar.

Is this an issue for anyone else? If this is an issue for a lot of members, would it be possible to make a change so that these sub-forum posts show up in the sidebar?

I don't often use the side, but thank you for pointing this out!  I will go take a look to make sure there isn't an option I missed.  Everyone can continue to posts their experiences with it.

Edit: Fixed!  Turns out that when I added new forum sections, they weren't selected by default on that widget.  8)

Yay! Thank you Little Fang <3

I sorta noticed it too, but I never gave it much thought. Thanks to you both tho! :)

I use the sidebar all the time.  I do have 2 suggestions though.  Instead of using posts, change it to topics.  That way you won’t waste your space with repeats.  And double the number of topics from 5 to 8 (maybe 10).  I recently returned to SMF for my site.

Edit: You have a great forum here.  It is growing pretty fast.  It looks like you are getting around 100 new members a month, 25 new members a week.  That’s terrific!  A bustling forum is a very good thing and growing your site to accommodate that growth will help.  ;)

Hi Little Fang! This issue again...I think because the "Group Readings" subsection is new, the new posts in that section are not registering on the sidebar.

Yes, I use that feature! But because not everything shows up, I've started using the icons at the top right under my profile name. There's the Recent Unread Topics icon (which looks like a page with writing on it) and the Updated Topics icon (speech bubbles icon) which shows only the threads I've been active on.

It just happens when I add another forum section and forget to add it to the widget.  ;)  All fixed!
