Things I've done for protection.

So, I've been doing a lot of research on protection, since I hear that it's really important, and these are a few things I've done.

1. I made this thingy, I'm not sure if it counts as a ward, but I hung it up above my bed to protect me while I sleep. I took part of a paper towel roll (The cardboard part) and sealed one end of it. Then I put some stuff in it that are associated with protection- eggshells, salt, and herbs. (for the herbs I just used Italian seasoning since it has sage, rosemary, thyme, and a bunch of other herbs I've heard help with protection.) Then I closed the other end, and tied a red string around it to make it hang.

2. I cleanse my space a lot. I try to do it every Sunday, and I use this tiny broom I made out of a rose stem and pink string. I open my window and sweep all the negative emotions out of my room. (I'm not allowed to do it to the rest of the house, since my parents aren't exactly supportive of my practices)

3. I put salt at my door. I usually do this after cleansing, and I scatter a bit of Himalayan pink salt at my door.

Are these good forms of protection? I'm still new, so any advice is greatly appreciated, thank you! 😄

Oddly, most of my protection stuff is Asian. I do a little protective Feng Shui with statues/cures. Fu dogs, that kind of thing. I have a big Kuan Yin statue facing the front door. You probably couldn't get away with that in your parents' house, unless you avoid the ones where she's seated on a lotus, Buddha style. There's lots of other poses available. Riding a dragon, sitting on a crescent moon, etc. If you decide to get one, let your parents think it's just a Chinese lady.

I wear jade - it's kind of an all-purpose stone, you don't need a bunch of different rocks for different purposes. There's stories of people being in terrible car accidents and emerging unscathed, but their jade bangle broke like it took the hit for them. And it's said that wearing jade will render you invisible to evil ghosts. I've never had any indication that evil ghosts even exist, much less had them bother me, but if the jade wants to hide me from them, I'll take it. There's some nice, inexpensive jade pieces on Etsy.

There's TONS of hoodoo practices.

I've got Indian head pennies ("scouts") nailed on my front doorstep where people have to step over them. I've had them there forever and nobody notices them.

I can't say with any certainty that any of this stuff works. Bad stuff still happens to me sometimes. So while one line of thought says it's all just superstition, another says
everything would have been WORSE if I didn't have all those things. Maybe a nasty cold would have turned into pneumonia, that kind of thing.

We're going to decorate our homes and ourselves regardless, so we might as well use objects that "earn their keep." Best not to tempt Fate. 😉

Thank you so much for the advice! Also, this is the best quote I've heard in weeks.

One thing I try to keep in mind is what I want protection from, and go from there.

Also I like to start strong with the mundane and then build on it, I think it's more effective. Like drawing protective runes on your bicycle won't stop a thief with bolt cutters, as I found to my dismay. (I should have invested in a better lock.)

I use magical protection but it is typically not of the physical kind (ie not something you can see or touch, like a talisman). If I’m looking to protect myself from spirits or negative entities, then I’ll use protection that comes from the spirit world - and I will enlist my guides and ancestors to facilitate that. I have found this type of protection to be much more effective than any physical items for me personally. So for instance, having a line of ancestors step in and block a negative spirit is much more effective than me using salt or a crystal etc.

If I am in need of protection in my mundane world, I’ll typically use spells and personal/ancestral power that can be extended as a protective force (it’s probably worth noting that I’m Norse and that my practice is very aligned with that.).

My protection spells can sometimes involve physical tools but for the most part, they take place on the spiritual plane. Even when I use bind runes or magical talismans, I don’t always have a physical version of them, they can just as well be applied and exist on a metaphysical plane.

One other benefit with non-physical protection is that it is obviously not visible and that no other person will be aware of it, and therefore you can be more discreet with your spiritual path if that is what you wish.

It's cool when your ancestors can present a united front like that. We've got so much mixing in us, my ancestors would probably stand around side eyeing each other. 🤣

Haha, that is so hilarious! I’m totally picturing that scene in my head 🤣

When I want a united front of ancestors, I’ll appeal to my Mother-line. My maternal grandmother was VERY protective, and I’ve realized that this trait existed among her female ancestors too. My main guide is from that bloodline as well, and they will unite on behalf of their kin. I think it would be trickier if I tried to mix in too many branches of ancestors. So that is a tip. It’s not about discriminating any ancestors, but I have found that there is a special bond in the pure maternal line of ancestors (the mitochondrial ancestors) for me. I can imagine that men might find the same with their Paternal bloodline of (Y-DNA) ancestors.  I do still venerate all the branches of ancestors, it’s just that so far, my main guides have been from my motherline.

When did you feel the need to protect yourself? Or why?

Sorry for asking I dont protect myself in any way, and I wonder if you feel different since you do.

Though I have a celestine stone that's very special for me and I feel a very calming energy with it

This is a valid question. I’m not of the belief that everyone needs magical protection at all times. If a person is super sensitive, like an if they are an empath or a psychic, or if the person does spirit work, then it is generally a good thing to have protection and/or metaphysical boundaries.

Good point. I seldom do protection practices per se. Only if there is a real threat. But I do energetic BOUNDARIES as a daily practice. I generally use sound, visualization, and body awareness to purify my energetic space and then strengthen the boundaries. I sometimes use crystals such as black kyanite, quartz, black onyx as part of this. I clean and ward my home regularly. Home protection feels necessary. I have evil eye beads displayed in a couple places for home protection.

At times I felt under real threat, I've done elaborate spells with candles, oils, herbs, baths, etc. But this is rare. Other times I've felt a minor threat like someone gave me the Evil Eye, and there's a guided meditation i do to protect from that.
