LogicalHue Posted August 3, 2020 Posted August 3, 2020 I'm trying to translate these cards with Google translate from images online. I've looked for an english version but everything that says there is one links to a 404 or some weird website where you get all the books you want for free but you have to give them your credit card info. Does anyone have an english translation? If not, does anyone (who has at least a little bit of familiarity with french) want to help? 😅
Decan Posted August 3, 2020 Posted August 3, 2020 Regarding the Major Arcana cards there is a text at the bottom of each card. These texts are translated into english: look at the very last paragraph for each card here https://archive.org/details/TheTarotOfP.ChristianFromHistoryAndPracticeOfMagic1870/page/n3/mode/2up The paragraph generally begins with "remember, son of earth, that..."; for the first arcana what is written at the foot of it, is "a firm faith in yourself, guided by reason and a love of justice will conduct you to the end that you wish to attain and will preserve you from the perils of the way." Apart that, there are keywords on each of the cards with small sentences on the pips. It's fortune-telling orientated but the texts on the Major have something more "spiritual" in some way, or like wise advices.
Decan Posted August 3, 2020 Posted August 3, 2020 (edited) On the LWB with the deck the keywords on the cards are compiled at the paragraph that is entitled in French "Valeur fondamentale : ..." For the Majors the text at the bottom for each is written at the paragraph that is entitled "Valeur unitaire : ..." It will be easier for you to refer to the LWB than to the handwritten words and sentences on the cards. Edited August 3, 2020 by Decan
LogicalHue Posted August 3, 2020 Author Posted August 3, 2020 @Decan Well obviously that would be easier! 🙂 But like I said, I'm going from images online. I don't have the cards or any book. Thank you for the link, it definitely helps but I'll still need to do the minor arcana.
Decan Posted August 4, 2020 Posted August 4, 2020 (edited) This will be more challenging for you I’m afraid, and probably you won't find the whole deck online, but who knows! It’s an expensive deck otherwise. I took a quick look at eBay and the sellers really ask a lot for this one. The best offer is currently at $140 for a deck in a really poor condition 🙃 I'm not sure it is OOP though. Several times in the past it wasn't available for some time, but new copies were available after that. Edited August 4, 2020 by Decan
gregory Posted August 4, 2020 Posted August 4, 2020 No - the best (that I can see this morning...) is new from amazon France: - €85.99 + postage. https://www.amazon.fr/France-Cartes-Grand-tarot-Belline/dp/B003ASS1MI/ref=sr_1_1?__ Even in 1981 it was an "expensive" deck - I paid £25 for mine, and that was a LOT for a deck then.
LogicalHue Posted August 4, 2020 Author Posted August 4, 2020 I have absolutely no interest in buying the deck, I'm trying to find online resources for the books. All of the cards are pictured here but the minor arcana are pictured smaller. I found someone on another forum who posted an image from a book that the text from the cards comes from and asked that person for a source but I just went to check on that and my account vanished overnight!
gregory Posted August 4, 2020 Posted August 4, 2020 (edited) If you open the minors in a new tab, they are big enough to read. There used to be a translation on tarotgarden's site before they updated but it's long gone; that's the 404 you hit. But it is still up there on the wayback machine. (More people should use it - it's a gold mine!) http://www.tarotgarden.com/library/decks/bellinedocumentation.php Oh how lovely - the translation is by the late and much lamented Firemaiden. Think of something 10x more emphatic than "yay" and that's what I'm saying. Thank you!!
gregory Posted August 5, 2020 Posted August 5, 2020 Glad to be of service. The wayback is always a good thing to try.
PathWalker Posted September 29, 2022 Posted September 29, 2022 Having been looking at my own deck yesterday, I searched out this today https://tarotgarden.com/blog/le-grand-tarot-belline-translated/ Enjoy PathWalker
Tarot_John Posted October 9, 2022 Posted October 9, 2022 Sadly, all of the modern Grand Tarot Belline reproductions are missing text that was on the original cards.
Guest Posted April 22, 2023 Posted April 22, 2023 Unfortunately, it seems like Cartamundi is no longer printing new copies.
