I’ve caved. I have no willpower it seems. I’ve just become fascinated by the 3 of Rods and the 10 of Swords.

I look forward to receive this deck of course, but I'll have to wait some time I think.

I don't know much the cards, so I looked at the 3 of Rods and the 10 of Swords online and for this latest particularly, the card looks impressive (huge bat in a red sky)!

It is just so bizarre, isn’t it? They remind me much of the 1930s and 40s movie magazines—where you got illustrations of scenes, or some pastel portrait of Hedy Lamarr and Charles Boyer.

I do not expect it to arrive anytime soon. But I am looking forward to having it hand.

Yes! Or the illustrations for ads, the smaller ones that accompany the large photo of an actress posing with a product, or a woman despairing over the condition of her nails.

I'm almost sure that the magazine it was meant to promote assigned it to an artist who was on staff already: "Let's get Myron, he likes all that spooky stuff." 😁

And I'm looking forward to your insights! The 3 of Rods is interesting, isn't it? A little bit of crossover from Lenormand, possibly intentional. The LWB calls the bat on the 10S a "vampire" - not the first thing that comes to mind these days (a lot of us like bats) but this one does look ominous.

The 3 of Rods is an interesting visual, too. That caduceus - aid and a remedy for a problem. But surely Picard was aware that the caduceus is identified with thieves, merchants, and messengers, and Mercury is said to be a patron of thieves and outlaws. That brings poachers to mind, people breaking the law in order to put food on the table. Lurchers were historically poachers' dogs, and Picard's dog looks like a Lurcher, while the Thomson Leng dog looks more like a Setter. (So still a working dog, like the Lenormand dog, but we tend to associate them more with hunting for sport.) So there's a slightly different inflection, but the message itself seems to be the same: help from a friend, basically. Maybe that's who the lady with the book is, and she's looking for a solution. Or maybe she's saying relax, help is on the way.

I find it odd that this system has been nearly obscured by Waite, of all people. It pops up from time to time - the Thomson Leng, the Knapp Hall, the Gran Tarot Esoterico, and that 78 card redrawn Wirth. I've never owned the last two, I understand that they're altered quite a bit. Still, you can see where the system comes from.  From what I've seen so far, Picard's ideas seem to be pretty seamless, practical and straightforward.
