GreatDane Posted February 13, 2021 Posted February 13, 2021 How many have had a fav for a long time, but then they fell in love with another deck and their once favorite got pushed to the side? I don't mean just a new fancy, but that your favorite was replaced by one you just loved MORE. I have been thinking about this and it's not so much a deck has been really replaced, but more a STYLE of a deck. The Pamela Centennial by US GAMES has just been my go to, then the one without borders came out and now I am looking at reall's Vintage. Just kind of different takes on the same deck, but I am feeling a bit of a loyalty shift here. Anyone else had a LONG TIME fav that you dumped for another?
Grace Posted February 13, 2021 Posted February 13, 2021 The RWS Centennial (pocket version in the tin)… was my favourite for a very long time. Then I branched out and picked up the Hermetic deck by Godfrey Dowson, and I'm enthralled - I always seem to use it now to the neglect of my other decks. Centennial... it's not you, it's me. lol.
ilweran Posted February 22, 2021 Posted February 22, 2021 I don't think it was so much that they got directly replaced by another, as their style just became not me anymore - Bohemian Gothic, Legacy of the Divine and Deviant Moon. I've gone more wood & forest/(pre)celtic/little bit of faery (Hidden Realm/Froud's faeries). I suppose I used to be more eclectic but now have narrowed things down a bit.
TheLoracular Posted February 22, 2021 Posted February 22, 2021 The Voyager Tarot. So the Voyager deck was my first; it came to into my possession back in high school and I truly fell in love. I took it everywhere, I did readings for friends, I stared at cards at night and invested so much of myself in it for at least two years. Then unfortunately, my New Age-flavored liberal Christian parents therapist parents became Believers in the Satanic Ritual Abuse phenomenon at the same time 16-17 year old me (who'd gotten away with being Wiccan since 14) was exploring the writings of Anton Le Vey... and sex. I got sent to a terrible little boarding school that was really just an over-priced group home in Utah, the house was exorcised by a quasi-Catholic priest and that Voyager tarot deck didn't survive and get brought to me despite a promise it would. My parents/me reconciled eventually and agreed mistakes were made by everyone involved, but when I replaced that Voyager deck eventually after getting the Hanson-Roberts and Thoth decks first? I just never could look at it the same way. Something had been lost by that whole horrible experience and I could never let myself get attached because I never wanted to care so much about a specific object the same way. The cynical part of my brain just says I see too many artistic flaws in the collage work that I didn't back in the 80s. LOL
GreatDane Posted February 22, 2021 Author Posted February 22, 2021 I just realized some of you great peeps posted on this thread! Thanks for sharing your favs that were replaced and why. Grace, OMG, yes, the Centennial. Still is my go to in a way. LOVE that deck, but then saw it's borderless sister, then reall's Vintage Pamela. Admittedly, very similar, but I thought the Centennial was just THE ONE, the only one to go to when I really wanted an answer, but then her sisters showed up. Interesting how you switched to the Hermetic, Grace. Would love to know what really tipped it for you, that that is now your most beloved. Ilweran, I do get it. When I first started reading, different types of decks appealed to me, and I don't think it was so much I changed, as I thought pretty meant good reader, then I realized they just weren't me as far as readers, but I really get what you mean. Funny how what we really are drawn to can change and why. TheLoracular, yours is definitely the most intense reason for changing favorites. I'm so sorry you went through such an experience. I do think as readers we tend to examine things perhaps the more we read? Or that decks we want to read with just jump out at us faster as we've been there, done that. Not sure. Glad you came out the other end and hope your life is full of peace now.

For me it's more of a style change. I don't have any one favorite but I do have style preferences during certain times of the year or nostalgia I'll have for an older deck I haven't used in awhile. Right before I came back online a couple of months ago, I went through my decks and packed half of them away so I defiantly had a style change then! I don't feel so overwhelmed now when I look at my decks.
GreatDane Posted February 26, 2021 Author Posted February 26, 2021 Good point, SC. Tastes can change. Sometimes not just a deck, but a style choice. Our paths in life can sometimes change course and voila....different preference, perspective.
