(MINCHIATE "AL LEONE" 1790)

I use elemental associations in my readings. Specifically, I use elemental dignities and planetary associations. I know not everyone does this, so if it's not your thing, I suppose you can just skip this bit.

In this method, I look at the number of the card and associate it with number of the element card (above) to determine each cards element. The zodiac cards are not included in this.

This is a simple method and it has saved me a lot of aggravation.

Here's how it goes.

Random selections here:

Say I get Strength, Fame, and Chariot in a reading (I won't use the actual cards because it will be too cluttered).

7 - 40 - 10 *

Seven is  one less than a multiple of four (23. Air is 1 less a multiple of 4)

Forty is a multiple of four (20. Fire is a multiple of 4)

Ten is two less than a multiple of four (22. Earth is 2 less than a multiple of 4)

Strength/Air - Fame/Fire - Chariot/Earth

It does seem a little confusing at first but with a little practice it becomes second-hand.

*The Fool is numbered 41 in this system and would be 41---1 more than a multiple of 4 (21. Water). The Magician follows as Earth.

The elements themselves pose a different set of issues for me: how do I interpret them? I've taken to associating them with the four Gospels. Pictorially they seem to fit. In turn, elementally they parallel with the zodiac signs of each of the Gospel writers:

20. Fire (Mark-Leo) Mark 12:33 NIV "To love him with all your heart, with all your understanding and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.”

21. Water (John-Scorpio) John 21 Jesus and the Miraculous Catch of Fish

22. Earth (Luke-Taurus) Luke 21:29–33 NKJV (Parable of the Fig Tree)

"Then He spoke to them a parable: 'Look at the fig tree, and all the trees. When they are already budding, you see and know for yourselves that summer is now near. So you also, when you see these things happening, know that the kingdom of God is near. Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all things take place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.'"

23. Air (Matthew-Aquarius) Matthew 6:26-34 NKJV
"26 Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27 Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?" [...]

The trick is to tie these meanings into a reading, as inspiration, without getting all "Doreen Virtue" about it. Simple definitions for each of the "Gospel" elements can help:

Fire - Inspiration of spirit or, Love thy neighbor (agape)

Water - Abundance that comes from hard work

Earth - Patience is a virtue, or Peace of mind

Air - Independence of thought (This is also the "O ye of little faith" and "One day at a time" passage.)

There is a lot to unpack in these parables, so a simple keyword isn't nearly enough for a line in a reading. The more I read through them and turn them over in my mind, the more potential gain they have for me.  These cards are almost like having a mini-affirmation deck.
