Liminal/New Liminal Tarot - Fool

Liminal: a crossing over space; in process; transitional period; threshold; movement from one stage to another.

The liminal shakes us out of our habitual patterns and invites us to surrender to uncertainty. Transformation only happens when we allow it.

0 - Fool

Seen from below, a jester watches a kite swirl and dip, unaware of the step he's about to take off a crumbling cliff. While his dog tries to grab the kite's string and alert him, he's definitely about to take a fall.

 

The Fool is not tied down by fear or preference; he moves in wonder and delight from one moment to the next. It's no wonder others have sewn bells on his clothes to alert them of his coming; he is oblivious to his surroundings other than what has currently caught his attention. He agrees with Joseph Campbell: "If you follow your bliss, you put yourself on a kind of track that has been there all the while, waiting for you..." Sometimes that track takes you over an uncertain edge, but he's not interested in fail-safe plans. He believes the risks are worth the tumbles. As Campbell stated: "doors will open where you didn’t know they were going to be." The little snail falling off the cliff might be a suggestion for patience and prudence, but the Fool knows it's impossible to take a leap in slow motion.
