Panda Posted September 19, 2021 Posted September 19, 2021 Should one take into account the facing direction of the main significators? I seem to remember that this is only relevant in Kipper but can't access my other books because they are all packed. If the Man has his back turned and is facing away into the distance to the right of a card, should extra weight be placed on this? Or should one simply read the combo as it is?
joy Posted September 19, 2021 Posted September 19, 2021 In my opinion direction is important and not only for the main significators but also for other cards, like the Scythe (which way is the blade pointing), the Fox (where is he looking at). If the man turned his back to cards it is significant I think, it feels like he is done with it or ignoring it, but for sure not paying attention to it.
selena Posted September 20, 2021 Posted September 20, 2021 It depends. Some card readers use the direction the Gentleman or Lady faces to determine the past (behind) or future (before) and change the direction they read the cards accordingly. However few, if any, remember to also change the direction they lay the cards. Other readers use the directional facing to determine sympathy, recognition or concord. If the Gentleman or Lady face each other, there is some mutual accord between them and the cards falling between them (chain) them will say something of what is between the two. The reverse is true if they face away. Having their back to each other is not automatically bad. That includes the kings and queen. If these look towards the significator there is some recognition whereas if they face away there is little to be said.

I'll certainly keep your post in mind.

I do use the concept of facing or turning away to give added meaning in Tarot where relevant but I wasn't sure to what extent it applied with Lenormand. I'll pay more attention to the concept now. Thanks selena.

Just that if you read according to the significator’s facing, surely you should also lay the cards accordingly. Think of the Celtic Cross (“this is before you…”) or old counting methods. Both use facing to determine both the spreading and reading of the cards. For example, if the Lady looks left, you would both lay and read the cards right to left. You would then count right to left also. That way the end (last card) is correct for the spread.

Thanks for the explanation selena. I hadn't considered it before. I would just lay the cards left to right, regardless.
