Paper Posted January 9, 2022 Posted January 9, 2022 Hi everyone! I'm looking for my first and possibly only deck. I've been looking around and the "Star Spinner", "Tarot of the Divine", and "Linestrider" are the ones that most call to me at the moment. However before I make a decision on who's coming home with me (I really can't afford more than one), are there any others with a similar vibe to those? I'd like to know all my options before choosing.
vulprix Posted January 9, 2022 Posted January 9, 2022 I really like decks by Paulina Cassidy, such as the Joie de Vivre and Spiritsong Tarot. These are both quite light and bright, but also well-rounded reading decks. I can recommend the Linestrider! And the Star Spinner Tarot looks pretty.
Rose Lalonde Posted January 9, 2022 Posted January 9, 2022 (edited) The Vindur reminds me of the Linestrider, (but it's Indie, so costs more). You've probably seen it - a deck that's bright but sticks closer to the Rider Waite Smith (RWS) imagery than the ones you listed, is the Modern Witch. You can see a forum member doing a week's worth of readings with that deck here. A clone like that, or of course the RWS itself, would be good if you want to learn and discuss RWS style readings. The Numinous comes to mind for bright. But again, indie pricing. (EDIT: also apparently on backorder at the moment) Edited January 9, 2022 by Rose Lalonde
gregory Posted January 9, 2022 Posted January 9, 2022 Of the ones you've looked at - I'd run with the Linestrider - not least because the book with it is also good. Assuming you are looking at the boxed set.
Niobium Posted January 9, 2022 Posted January 9, 2022 A few more in this vein include: - The Shadowscapes Tarot, Stephanie Pui-Mun Law. Lovely watercolor art, fantasy and nature themed, RWS-based. MM so quite affordable. - Mara Lunne Tarot, L.S. Grainne. This is an MPC deck which is closer to indie price, though not quite as expensive as most. A really lovely deck with an alternate lovers card. - Cosmic Slumber Tarot, Tillie Walden. Similar to Star Spinner, this one's slightly more than your average MM though the packaging is really well done. Lovely art with a gentle, thoughtful theme. - True Heart Intuitive Tarot, Rachel True. MM deck with inclusive art and very clear imagery and RWS themes. I really like this deck as a general go-to deck, and it's quite affordable. - Hello Tarot, Joe Rosales. Hello Kitty themed RWS deck. This one you would need to print yourself, as it's quite hard to get hold of for anything less than $100, but it's such a good deck I feel I'd be remiss in not mentioning it on the off chance self-printing isn't off the table for you. There's PDFs of the cards available in various places. It's one of the most direct decks I've ever owned, and Rosales incorporated RWS into it so well that it remains a deck I've never taken out of general use.
Nemia Posted January 9, 2022 Posted January 9, 2022 Excellent recommendations so far! The Good Karma Tarot is a new deck, and it's very non-threatening and self explaining. The book is good and the art very clear. I'm not sure how this deck will perform when confronted with huge dark issues; it's a very bright, upbeat deck. But sometimes that's what you need. Especially if you're just starting out. You can read for others with this deck from the box, it's so clear.
DanielJUK Posted January 9, 2022 Posted January 9, 2022 I wanted to suggest the Zillich Tarot by German artist Christine Zillich. The cards are watercolours and so colourful and fluid in how all the shapes merge into it. It's light and I always think it's the perfect deck for Summer! It's dreamy and surreal but also vibrant in the shapes and colours. It is a Thoth inspired tarot deck and has kabbalah symbols on the cards but I read it like a regular deck and it works just fine! Spread out your purchases, you can get the other decks you want later. I am not saying tarot decks are very enabling to get more but they are 🙂 🤣. There is no pressure to get the one you must feel drawn to now and catch up with the others later.
Paper Posted January 14, 2022 Author Posted January 14, 2022 Hey guys! After looking at your suggestions, I did add "The Good Karma" and "The Modern Witch" to my maybe list, they both vibed with me too, as well as one called "White Numen" I found while browsing. In the end I did end up bringing "Tarot of the Divine" home, I figured that if I didn't really get tarot, I'd at least have some pretty cards with stories behind them 🙂 . However feel free to keep adding to the list, pretty sure I won't be the only one looking for "friendly" decks ❤️
Nemia Posted January 16, 2022 Posted January 16, 2022 I second the Zillich, and would like to say that the White Sage is a very nice deck (comes in a lovely tin like the Zillich and is also a watercolour deck). The minors are close to pips, though, and if you don't resonate with chakras, it's probably not for you. But all my readings with it have been gentle and insightful. More cluttered visually but very gentle in its message is the Distant Past Tarot, a collage deck using art from different periods, mostly Neo-Classical and Romantic. The turqouise background unites the whole deck visually, the cards are easy to read and their message is positive. The artist designed this deck originally for her young daughter. It still has enough depth to read well with it. I have the pocket version and really like it. Another lovely watercolour deck is the New Liminal, it's beautiful, clear and there's something very warm-hearted and kind about it. I'm looking right now at the Devil (it's Capricorn and I have a collection of Devil cards on the magnet board that I use as tarot calendar next to my desk), and even he looks as though he could be saved. A beautifully made deck, non-threatening and like lit from within. (for a walkthrough, look here). I trimmed mine a bit and it's lovely. Maybe the best Hierophant ever. And then there's the Idiosyncradeck; in spite of the name, a very nice, clean, bright deck. Right now it's out of print but I'm pretty sure that the artist will release a new, different version. Her vector graphics are clear and lovely, and her choices for court cards and suit symbols are surprising and apt. It's extremely easy to read with, and the pdf that comes with the deck is very useful, too. If you want to read tarot without any esoteric content, this deck is great. You may wish to keep an eye on the artist's Etsy shop.
Paper Posted January 20, 2022 Author Posted January 20, 2022 The White Sage and Distant Past are really nice, I feel I vibe a bit more with White Sage but it might be a bit more difficult for me to interpret since I'm just starting out 🙂
Nemia Posted January 21, 2022 Posted January 21, 2022 Oh Paper, don't worry, you'll make progress sooner than you think! The more you read the cards and just play with your deck, whichever deck!, the better you'll connect with it. The learning never stops anyway, so it doesn't really matter how far on the way we are 😉
