Genius_Garden_Tarot Posted September 15, 2022 Posted September 15, 2022 Hello, All! I was graciously invited to share my deck progress on the forum, and since I just finished the major arcana and a video showing each card, I've decided to share it here! Just in case sharing the link violates the anti-spam rule, I'm also going to include a few photos of the cards. Thank you so much for having me here, and welcoming my work into the forum! GGT Major Arcana Reveal Video Photo 1: The Fool Photo 2: Justice Photo 3: The Chariot + Strength
HOLMES Posted September 15, 2022 Posted September 15, 2022 Thanks for sharing. Coming from a waite clone perspective I find the artwork to be perhaps to simple.. In the fool there is no companion In justice there is no justice but balance. In the chariot I would add 2 figurehead at the head of the boat. The strength card is the best of the four. Myself I would change the name to the simple garden tarot.. And perhaps make the justice card more wearing a wrap, buckskin dress. That said I'm sure there be niche for it. And it is good artwork. I'm just the critic who compares tarot imagery. For example my pips must be illustrated while others are happy with the formation, numbers of the pips. So take what I say with a grain of salt. I do find the artwork to be good for mediation as I look at it. Umm did you like bob Ross ?

I'm new to this space, so I didn't know it functioned more like a workshop. Good to know, and good luck!
HOLMES Posted September 15, 2022 Posted September 15, 2022 Worry not you don't have to change anything. One of my favourite part from the movie pollack was how in his anger he was going to change his artwork to appease the critic and right at the last moment he realized he couldn't And the art critic told him he was a true artist for he was remaining true to his vision to paraphrase. In the other defunct forum the deck creation forum was part workshop as many aspiring deck creators were looking for input, and validation of one vision. I did feel the strength and chariot cards activate a feeling to mediate on those particular image. I hope you come back and share.,maybe help other deck creatorswho may post.
Mister Posted September 15, 2022 Posted September 15, 2022 That fool does One Giant Leap for sure, or is it happening to him? Très tranquille, nonetheless. Nice. Apropos - Do you plan on sticking to Waite's titles (names for the cards) and his assignment of numbers? For naming the child goes to the parent 😉 Like No.8, Justice (wait, it's 11 with Waite!), why not Balance, if that is what you want to highlight? It does change the meaning, but that does not imply that it can not stand on its own.

Hey @Genius_Garden_Tarot the thing is, this is a public forum, any member can express their fellings and give their opinion as long as they stay within the rules. What you can do, is, tell everyone that you just would like to share but do not want feedback. That is fine of course! 😊

I'll be honest--it's been a long time (like, seven years) since I've been a part of a forum. Gotta get back in the groove!

One of my strongest intentions for this deck is that it be readable, so I want the association to be clear as soon as someone sees the card. Thanks for your thoughts!
Raggydoll Posted September 16, 2022 Posted September 16, 2022 Thank you for sharing your project with us! It will be interesting to see it unfold! The imagery reminds me a bit of the Motherpeace tarot, or perhaps a minimalist version of it. I love that you’re doing traditional art! 😃 Will you share some of your intentions regarding the choices you’ve made in depicting these cards? I’m particularly curious about the details that aren’t necessarily fully in line with the Waite-Smith tradition. Like why Justice has kept the balancing element but lost her sword, or why the ‘charioteer’ has no element of control or speed, or the ‘holding together opposite forces’. We could all speculate on this but it would be nice to hear your own reasoning for it 😀 Best of luck with everything!
HOLMES Posted September 16, 2022 Posted September 16, 2022 Yes true, for should it get published, down the line, the majority be looking for a nice book combo to describe the symbolism. Robin wood did a great book on her deck long ago for example
gregory Posted September 16, 2022 Posted September 16, 2022 You don't want critique, so I won't - but with the images you have shown here, you will need to include a book.... I don't think the title works, though.

One of my intentions with the deck is to depict the archetypes in their highest expression, and to use simple, natural imagery. Justice isn't holding a sword because I feel that true Justice is a natural consequence of action, and not a punishment inflicted by a governing authority. Likewise, I'm not sure that one can successfully yoke opposite forces through sheer force of will. Instead, when one accepts that opposing forces can actually peaceably live together side by side, the need to hold them together dissipates. I'm trying to depict the outcomes of spiritual evolution in the archetypes, I suppose! For this reason, I'm definitely writing a guidebook to accompany the deck. Thank you so much for your feedback and input!

I've spoken about my take on genius elsewhere, and have explored the genius garden concept on my podcast and in my work. It definitely reflects my intention for the deck and it's unlikely to appear elsewhere, so it stays! Thank you for your thoughts and feedback ❤️

HOLMES Posted September 18, 2022 Posted September 18, 2022 One thing to be aware is deck fraud, like if you show all your imagery, The counterfeiters could steal your imagery and say it's theirs. tarot creators be surprised to see a cheaper version of their deck in etsy, ebay and such. I have no idea how to combat it So don't really want to show all your imagery;)
