Runa Posted September 25, 2022 Posted September 25, 2022 I'm designing some patterns for tarot wallets/bags that I want to make available online. I've been looking around online to gather the average dimensions of different decks and have devised five basic sizes (mini/small/medium/large/extra large) around which I will design the patterns, but the one that I'm missing is deck thickness which is not always mentioned online, and I haven't collected enough decks to measure different ones myself. I know the average size for most is around one inch, but I'm wondering if I should provide extra wiggle room for thicker decks, compensating for different cardstocks, adding room for guide book, etc. Would anyone like to take the time to give me the measurements of whatever decks you have so I can gather a good average? If you feel like taking the time of course, I would greatly appreciate it! Example below: Tarot of Pagan Cats (mini) Height: 3 in Width: 1.5 in Thickness: 1 in
gregory Posted September 25, 2022 Posted September 25, 2022 (I don't have a ruler with inches...) The latest one I got, Magicians, Martyrs and Madmen, which is on my desk and is decent stock, is 2.8 cm thick - a little over an inch if I recall correctly. But with the booklet, which I would definitely want in with the deck, it's 3.3 cm. I'd call it a medium sized deck, BTW - it's "standard tarot size" as they say. 12 cm by 7 cm. I would definitely allow room for the LWB, and a little extra so nothing ever has to be forced. I'll measure some more later,
Niobium Posted September 25, 2022 Posted September 25, 2022 (edited) I have a few decks I can give this for now, due to making my boxes! Lord of the Rings Tarot (Fickes) Height: 121mm* Width: 70mm Thickness: 32mm (27mm actual) * I suspect this is a miscut and was meant to be 120mm Sabotage Tarot Height: 70mm Width: 110mm Thickness: 30mm Dragon Age Tarot Height: 120mm Width: 70mm Thickness: 32mm Atlantis Tarot Height: 116mm Width: 70mm (67mm actual) Thickness: 30mm (28mm actual) Apologies for these all being in mm though Google can translate it if nothing else. The 'actual' part is a note for myself that the measured dimension was 'actually' this value, but I use a higher number in making the deck box for various reasons. After converting cm to inches, this fits perfectly with my "medium" size. I'm including room for LWB in all my sizes but you mention a much thicker booklet, so perhaps I should make them bigger to accommodate. 3 hours ago, Niobium said: I have a few decks I can give this for now, due to making my boxes! No apologies necessary, I can convert them to inches easily! All of these seem to be slightly over 1 inch thick, and so far I've included 1.5 inches of room in my little bags. This should be enough for most decks but as I mentioned above, I might add extra space for bigger booklets. Thank you for giving me your measurements!
gregory Posted September 27, 2022 Posted September 27, 2022 Do you need larger ones ? Because they tend not to be standard sized - the only one I can think of that has other decks the same size is the Thoth at 3 inches by 5, and again just over 1 inch deep. IIRC. That is also one of the sizes offered as standard by POD printers - who also offer poker sized, 3.5" x 2.5". Here;s what one POD printer offers: https://www.printerstudio.com/unique-ideas/blank-playing-cards.html For anything else you could offer an extra expensive made to order service....

Well I'm just figuring out an anverage. I think most decks regardless of size will end up being just over 1 inch deep unless they use crazy thick cardstock, and then wiggle room will be added for guidebooks. Since I'll be providing a pattern for people to sew their own, it could also be customizable for more room!
gregory Posted September 27, 2022 Posted September 27, 2022 Unless you want to make a pouch for the Alleyman.... I wouldn't if I were you. With all the expansion packs, it has 196 cards... and a perfectly good box !
