Austin Osman Spare's long-lost Tarot deck from 1906

Strange Attractor Press and the Magic Circle Museum in London are currently running a Kickstarter to produce the first ever reproduction of Austin Osman Spare's long-lost Tarot deck. Spare was a legendary English artist, a one-time friend of Aleister Crowley, and an innovative occultist often considered the father of Chaos Magic. In 1906, Spare created a unique Tarot deck featuring marginal drawings which can link the cards together to form specific cartomantic meanings. His card designs drew from hundreds of years of both Tarot cartomancy and standard card-reading traditions. Lost for decades, the cards were recently rediscovered by Jonathan Allen in the archives of the Magic Circle Museum.

Backers of the Kickstarter have the option of receiving a facsimile of the deck and/or a new expanded edition of the long-out-of-print book Lost Envoy - The Tarot Deck of Austin Osman Spare.

Yes indeed - I have the book and backed this the day it showed up. One of the most important KS campaigns EVER.

I also backed this as soon as I heard about it.

I'm super excited for it as well! There's going to be some major announcements concerning this campaign soon, so stay tuned... 😁

I am really nervous that it won't hit it's funding goal... I have a backed a book and two decks.

It's risky, but I'm going to pledge in the morning. What a wonderful project.

It seems to have made its goal and there are 19 days still to go on it 🙂

Hello,

This deck is actually one of my most high priced decks, I live in a country where I have to pay a lot of extra costs for shipping and taxes. Just recently I have started to consult this deck for spreads on personal matters. As the deck is perhaps a deck that takes a long time to sink in. What i found is that it actually connected to the themes very accurately. Now I do believe this is a sum of various aspects. When fe I have low energy and consult cards I often will get lets say a darker themed card. When I thrive well and have a great deal of energy I find I get cards that often seem to be more specific. Anyways, this deck is good for studies, to me its a study in its own. One can find very small details in these cards that can attract the eye and suddenly jump out into sight!

As a small note I would like to add that this is a playing card based deck, perhaps a mixture of playing card symbolism and the Major Arcana Cards from the Tarot. One of the things I would recommend is to have a look into playing card symbolism first.

Currently I am also studying playing card symbolism which btw is a very old practice used world wide since olden times. From my studies of playing card symbolism and techniques I can get even more out of the AOS deck which remains quite a mystery.

Its maybe odd to say but Austins imprint can be sensed within the deck, his dark extroverted spirit .

bright blessings
