I would have assumed this was down to my browser, but talking to friends here, I now know I am not alone. I have cleared my cache, and I am using a PC.

It seems that the emoji system we were using here just up and died on us.  I switched it to standard, check again?

the text emoji and codes seem to be working okay now 🙂

I was using my mobile yesterday and thought it was just a fault with the connection that the emoji's were acting weird. Thanks for mentioning it @gregory

Odd - seems to be ONLY the :) that doesn't kick in... And I have to go hunt out the ones I LIKE  (I did before because one got the Apple-style ones)- but it is good that they no longer default to the fugly ones !
