Simple Spreads to do in the Morning?

Recommended Posts

Every morning I do a 1 card reading, to determine what I focus on that day. I’d like to learn some more, that are quick and easy to do before work. What do you guys do when you want a quick reading, and what kind of questions do you ask?

Posted

One card - and if a question hadn't come to mind - why would I read  on anything other than "what will today bring"?

Posted

Same! I do a one card reading, unless any jump out while I'm shuffling, in which case I'll go with what I'm given. I tend to focus on specific issues or situations that are challenging me or bothering me, or things I'm feeling stuck with and need a bit of help clearing a path for deeper consideration. If there's nothing major going on, I'll just ask for something for the day ahead or something to meditate on.

I was gonna say, “cream cheese” but then I read the rest of the post and that is not the spread you are looking for.

Have you thought about a 3 card spread?

Each card could be a different aspect of the day. What to focus on, what to avoid and overall outlook for the day as a whole.

There are some nice Daily Spreads in the archive of our old tarot forum, just scroll down this page a little here

There are some lovely spreads and hope it gives you some inspiration 🙂

Personally, if you are going to make it a daily practice, I wouldn't go for a large spread every day, i'll take up a lot of your time. A day is a small period of time, have a go at other spreads like a larger week or monthly one or try other spreads you find.

I've always hated calling Tarot spreads ... spreads. It inevitably makes me think of vegan butter substitute or fake mayonaise. WHY are they called spreads??? Sadly I've not come up with any better alternative.

I personally never pull one card. Three is my minimum. But I also think I got jaded from reading 1001 tarot reddit posts from newbies saying, "I pulled the DEATH card on my daily draw ... am I gonna DIE???" Yes ... but prolly not today.

A quick read I like, that can be done for the day, for the week, or for a particular event, is "What will Hinder / What will Help?"

Basically, two cards.

1: What to look out for that might get in my way.
2: What to keep an eye out for that could help me out.

The two are sometimes directly connected, and other times might point to completely separate things.

I love a one card draw in the mornings. Here are some things that I like to ask:

What energy should I draw on today?

A message of encouragement to get through the day?
What is an obstacle I might face today?

How can I best align with my highest self today?

How should I handle any negativity coming my way?

Depending what I have going on that day I might ask how I can be the best employee/mom/wife/or whatever hat I’m wearing 😆

I like a three card spread some monrings; composed of:

         3

    1

2

1 -- the reflection of the day, the next step

2 -- what is under the surface, hidden, unconscious

3 -- A potential result of the day ( a challenging card here can suggest the opportunity for a spiritual  refresh, or a misstep if not integrated)

I gather what strikes me from this and consider it as I process the hours ahead.

Here is a bit of fun AND a learning experience.  Pull a few morning cards (three is good, if each position has a purpose) as a daily reading.  Pull them in the morning, but keep them face down, and don't look at them till just before you go to bed at night.   Then turn them over and see how they fit into the events of the day!  It's really good interpretation practice.

Okay, this won't direct me as I face the day, but I think I'd rather take most days as they come.  Obviously if there is quite an issue hanging over me that I need insight into, I'll pull the morning cards in a conventional  manner, and look at them right away.  But just an ordinary day?  I think I'd rather look back on the day with understanding, rather than trying to figure out which events are 'meant' in the reading beforehand.  (Of course if something DOES crop up that I need advice on, I can still turn the cards over at any time.)

@Misterei - I suppose you can call them 'layouts' instead of 'spreads.'  I know what you mean, though...spread, urgh.  But layout also urghs me a bit as well.

For the last few months I've been pulling two cards in the morning, one card just felt restrictive and dare I say, a bit one dimensional. For me personally, anyway. I don't assign positions, I just let them tell me a story about what to expect for the day. I should say I'm using this as a learning exercise more than anything else so thankfully I haven't really fallen into a trap of any kind of expectation, I just bring them to mind every now and again throughout the day and then diarise them in more detail first thing the next morning.

Here's a funny draw I got yesterday. I was a bit delayed because we had a minor plumbing emergency in our kitchen and I was a bit stressed about it to say the least:

I came to realise that the cards were telling me that yes, you have a problem with your water and yes, you've reacted pretty strongly to that problem (read: I had a tantrum)! But at the end of the day it really won't turn out as bad as you've let yourself believe that it will. I wouldn't have had the same reassurance with just one card.

Once I get a bit more headspace I'll move on to three cards and perhaps adopt a spread with assigned meanings, but this is working really well for me at the moment.

@KiMo - May I ask what version of the RWS deck are you using for the reading you pictured above?  I really like the mottled background on it.

(I can so relate to a tantrum reaction to a plumbing emergency!   That would be me as well.... 🙂 )

I can understand using one card for a daily reading. It's definitely direct. But I've always liked to use three cards forthereason of not beings direct! it's kind of like, this the here and now, this one's looking out for me, and this one is watching my back.

It's the Weiser Tarot. I was originally using the RWS Centennial for daily draws but then started reaching more for this, I really like the way the colouring has been reimagined, there's a lovely vibrancy to it.

I should say that it's really unusual for me to react so strongly to an issue 😅 But this was one of a few straws that broke the proverbial back. With a broken tap that was uncontrollably gushing water everywhere and could only be switched off at the stopcock, in near 30 degree heat, I 'had a moment' 🙈

Thanks, @KiMo.  I've just put that Weiser Deck in my Amazon cart.

I try to keep it simple so I draw three cards.
1. My feelings today

2. My thoughts today

3.What brings the day for me

Posted

I usually just pull one card for my daily draw, indicative of what the day may bring or what lesson it may teach.

I started a new habit where I shuffle the cards each morning and ask for three cards

  • The first is a card to highlight what I'm meant to focus and meditate on today, with the goal of applying it to my current situation.
  • Next I ask for a card to highlight any issues, circumstances or events I should keep in mind to meditate on going forward into the near future.
  • Last, I ask for a card to study, not one to apply to my own reading, but to learn and understand so I can apply it in readings going forward.

As I see it, one card will only give me the "tone of the day" without being specific about events and circumstances. Three cards will allow for a little development over the period, so I prefer that.

Yes.  I've been doing a Mind/Body/Spirit daily reading lately, which I look at at the start of the day now.  I also add an Advice card.

This approach has proved really helpful about 90% of the time.  (Occasionally it doesn't make sense to me ...either at the start or the end of the day! But it usually does.)

It's basically Mind ...what I'm thinking about.  Body ...either health—if relevant—or what I'll physically be doing or involved in that day.  Spirit ...what my feelings about the day will be, or already are.  Advice is just for guidance during the day.

I've never obtained much usefulness from just pulling a single daily card, so this three-card-plus-one is a better choice for me.

I started doing this, too, and I really like it. Thank you for sharing!

If it's just a quick reading, I tend to just do a line of 3 or 5 without any predefined positions, with the intention to show me the most important events of the day. It works really well for highlighting something that needs to be known.

Sometimes I'll do a Chien du Pique either with playing cards or Lenormand, and that gives a general read for around 24/48 hours. It covers areas like work, what's coming fast, thoughts/feelings, the home, potential surprises etc. It's quite fun to do! 😁

There's another method I found recently too that shows the next 24 hours. It tends to be done with a deck of 32/36 playing cards. I only know it as "The Express Method" but it's similar to older cartomancy methods, such as "Divination via Spades".

Here's how to do The Express Method:

• Shuffle the deck and turn over the first card. Note whatever the suit is and keep it in front of you to form the start of a row. The suit is the "trump" suit.

• Turn over cards in the rest of the deck until you land on a trump suit card. Turn over the next card and place it in the row.

• If the card placed is the same suit as the trump suit you then place another card from the deck after it.

• Repeat until you've gone through the whole deck.

The cards laid out depict the next 24 hours.

I do three cards, left to right.

-1-2-3-

1: Think - What’s my brain doing today?

2: Feel - What are my emotions doing today?

3: Do - What’s my body doing today?

That’s usually the best forecast I’ll get all day. 🙂

Daily draw in the morning is a new practice I started to improve my LN skills. Waay beyond needing it for Tarot };>

I do 3 cards as a pyramid shape:

1 = Focus or topic for the day

2&3 = insight about #1

I'm enjoy this approach as well, and ask similar inquiries.   roughly 50% of the time I'm using the Thoth, and one card from that system is certainly enough to chew on for the day in a meaningful way.   I am just a big fan of one card draws, and am pleased to see that others use them in a proactive way, especially the line about excelling at the hat you happen to be wearing.
