I like to do master studies of art from historical tarot decks. I like to look at the techniques, the material as well as the symbolism and the art style. I was very inspired by this Minchiate deck. It’s one of the loveliest hand painted decks that I’ve come across. All that gold paint speaks to my inner magpie 🤩

The deck is sadly incomplete but I wasn’t exactly planning on copying the whole thing. We shall see how many cards I’ll attempt. I finished the ace of cups today and thought I would share it here. (I hope no one minds?)

This is the original version. It is of course much nicer! Those thick lavish gold edges are to die for!

The lovely flower that sprouts from the cup, the beautiful wreaths and golden stars… such a pretty design! 🥰

So beautiful!  Is it possible, that once you finish your copying, you might feel well enough immersed in this deck to go ahead and fill in the missing cards yourself?

Never thought I'd come across a Minchiate so vivid and richly-colored, so this is certainly a treat. This is a very promising project

Thank you! I used gouache, it’s what I have at home other than watercolor. I really like to work with gouache, it just isn’t water proof so the artwork has to be scanned and then stored properly. So it’s not something I’d use if I wanted to hand make a deck, but it’s perfect for projects that will be printed professionally.

Yeah that is a possibility! I don’t think I’m up to such a big project just now, maybe later. For now I want to experiment and get to know the techniques, and I also want to enjoy all the luscious gold paint details 🤩 I might do a card from another historical deck next, there is another one that I am very drawn to as well.  And I might just add gold details to it, because, why not 🤣

Yes this deck is really unique and beautiful. I adore the dark background and the gilded borders. Such a stunning combo. It’s definitely something I want to try to copy in other projects as well!

Exactly!  We cannot have too many luscious gold details.
