EmpyreanKnight Posted January 28, 2018 Posted January 28, 2018 Dancing_moon just began sign-ups for our Forum's inaugural TdM circle this February. Tbh I haven't worked much with the Marseille system before. I wanna flex those divinatory muscles tho, and what better way to do that than by joining circle exchanges. So don't hesitate to jump in whatever your proficiency level is! The circle allows any deck with non-illustrated/non-scenic minors or what we usually call "pip" decks, so yeah! :D Anyway, that got me thinking about what my favorite pip deck is. As I've mentioned, I don't work with them a lot, but there is a gamut of Marseille decks that are truly lovely. I have two versions of the Madenié, and Yves Reynaud's 2012 offering was gorgeous. I have the Madenié set by Packard, but I have yet to open it. I'm leaning towards using it for dancing_moon's circle, since I want them big cards - yum! So how about you, what are your favorite pip decks? It can be historical or not, as long as it's non-illustrated. I just hope I won't be too enabled lol. ;D
Flaxen Posted January 28, 2018 Posted January 28, 2018 My favourite Pip decks are: Il Meneghello's Soprafino Flornoy's Noblet CBD TdM Mamanmiyuki TdM (gorgeous mini version) Tarot du Roy Nissanka I could easily make the list longer but these are the ones I choose to read with most. :)
dancing_moon Posted January 28, 2018 Posted January 28, 2018 Personally, I love reprints, the more 'crude' ones like Vandenborre and Krebs (Piatnik), as well as 'finer' ones like Della Rocca and Minchiate. :) I'm also in love with gilded Visconti. :D My favorite non-historical pip decks are LoS China and Anne Stokes Gothic. Here's another one trying not to get enabled by the thread. ;D
Saturn Celeste Posted January 28, 2018 Posted January 28, 2018 I'm also in love with gilded Visconti. :D Oh that is such a lovely deck! I consider the Medieval Scapini a pip deck. It's the little 'scenes' on the pips that draw me to the deck. I feel that if you put the cards together and flip them you'd see an old fashioned 'magic lantern' like cinema.

I have the Medieval Scapini set, and those cards are sublime, Saturn. And now that you mentioned it, I just realized that aside from the Marseilles, I actually have quite a number of pip decks! Off the top of my head I have the Renaissance, the Hermetic, the Gran Taro Esoterico, and the Masonic. I didn't even consider them, but now I should check out my collection and see if I have more. Thanks! :D
EmpyreanKnight Posted January 28, 2018 Author Posted January 28, 2018 Il Meneghello's Soprafino . . . 'finer' ones like Della Rocca . . . I don't have a Meneghello yet, but I've only heard good things about them. The Soprafino sounds like a great place to start. :)

Not that I'm trying to enable or anything... ;D
Carojulie Posted January 28, 2018 Posted January 28, 2018 Hello, There are of course a number of beautiful Marseille decks out there (the reproductions of historic decks can be really yummy sometimes ! ) But despite Marseille deck being my country's tradition, personaly they are not always my favourites when it comes to pip decks. I find Marseille decks generally beautiful but austere - in the sense that they are soooo serious.... and you are supposed to be soooo serious when you read with them. Mind you, I can do that too, and I do apreciate reading with a good Marseille too..... I am waiting for a reproduction of the Dodal in the mail right now (finally gave in after lemming after a Dodal for years). Or, it is the aura of seriousness that envelops Marseille studying and reading, in my country.... like there is no other valuable tarot apart the true Marseille..... that can get tiresome after a while. So, as much as I like a nice Marseille deck, in my present mood if I name my favourite pip decks, there will be no Marseille in the selection. Let me pick three out of the top of my head right now : - Mythical Creatures tarot - Oriental Tarot - Vacchetta tarot
EmpyreanKnight Posted January 29, 2018 Author Posted January 29, 2018 Carojulie, I really appreciate your insights on the Marseille and how Continentals traditionally perform their readings. I think it was you who told us that the French liked reading with majors-only decks. I also never thought that some people regard reading the Marseille as a serious business. Altho, well, some Thothies can be fiercely traditional too lol. And now I think that I should also put on my serious cap when reading with the TdM.
Carojulie Posted January 29, 2018 Posted January 29, 2018 Ah Knight, you make me laugh with your serious cap ! And I am sorry, I realise that in my precedent message, I sounded more harsh than I meant ! ;D Yes it is true that one traditional way to read the tarot here, is to use only the majors of a Marseille deck. I think that there are also many Marseille readers in Canada who use only the Majors, at least that is what I have heard. But I honestly dont know that many french readers, so maybe there are tons who work differently and I just dont know about them, so I would not wish to sound like "all french readers do is use the 22 majors of a Marseille deck", because I honestly don't know. I just know that it is a "traditional" way to read here, but there might be other ways too. One thing is sure, it is that the RWS is not as popular here in France as it is in english speaking countries. But that is not to say that no-one uses the RWS here - for that I would not know. I like Marseille decks, I am interested in the history of the decks, and I am also interested in the majors only technique, why not. But it's only that I do not wish to be frowned upon if I happen to use a modern RWS style deck for reading (and yes that has happened to me in the past, the "being frowned upon" part ! Because I've been around some people who take their Marseille deck VERY seriously and are quite comtemptuous of any other deck..... But again, I would not want to make a generalization !) I hope I have not offended anyone, that was really not my intention ! :)
EmpyreanKnight Posted January 30, 2018 Author Posted January 30, 2018 Oh no, Carojulie, you were not offensive at all! In fact you always get your points across nicely and with a lot of tact. The serious cap thing was just a joke too lol. But I can't stress this enough, thanks to all the info you give us regarding how others perform and experience the Tarot. We sometimes become so immersed with the English/GD system that we don't even consider exploring the richness and wisdom of other systems like the Marseille. Or at least I did, but now that the TdM has piqued my interest, I feel so excited to explore it. :)
Carojulie Posted February 6, 2018 Posted February 6, 2018 Attention, picture Feist ! In the following posts, I am going to (try and) post pictures of some of my favourite pip decks : First, some Marseille (Conver ; Noblet ; Dodal ; Payen) Note the way the dog (or is it a cat ?) ripped the Fools pants in the Noblet..... naughty Noblet.
Carojulie Posted February 6, 2018 Posted February 6, 2018 Then, some Italians and other historic reproductions (Vacchetta ; Soprafino ; Oriental tarot)
Carojulie Posted February 6, 2018 Posted February 6, 2018 Now, one beautiful pip deck that did not go into one of the above catogory (Mythical Creatures tarot)
Carojulie Posted February 6, 2018 Posted February 6, 2018 And finally, some modern take on TdM (Marseille par Pole Ka ; Coudpiéocculte Divagatoire ; Corte di Tarocchi ; Tarot des Filles) Enjoy ! :)
~D~ Posted February 7, 2018 Posted February 7, 2018 have you seen the New Lotus Tarot deck...its unusual..Actually my fav card from the deck is The World, but here is one of the other guys:
Chiska Posted February 7, 2018 Posted February 7, 2018 I love my il Meneghello decks - Vacchetta, Soprafino, and Visconti! Beauties. Like Flaxen said, the card stock is divine for the the Soprafino and the Vacchetta! I always will have a special place in my heart for the 1970 Grimaud TdM. It was my very, very first deck in the late 70s. I shared it with my very best friend. We were so secretive and careful! Her mother was very disapproving!
Flaxen Posted February 7, 2018 Posted February 7, 2018 Thanks for all the images, Carojulie. You have some lovely decks there.
dancing_moon Posted February 7, 2018 Posted February 7, 2018 Then, some Italians and other historic reproductions (Vacchetta ; Soprafino ; Oriental tarot) That Oriental deck... <3 <3 <3
Carojulie Posted February 7, 2018 Posted February 7, 2018 That Oriental deck... <3 <3 <3 Isn't it beautiful ? I love it ! And you should feel the cardstock..... a real dream ! Similar to Il Meneghello cardstock for such decks as the Soprafino. I love this Oriental deck for multiple reasons. It's beautiful with its delicate watercolor art, soft to the eyes and the hands, and also it is a pleasure to work with, it is an easy reader if you like pip decks. But most importantly, I love it for the way it entered my life : it arrived completely unexpectedly when our sweet Bodhiseed decided to give it away, and sent it to me as a complete gift, a sweet unexpected gift out of the blue ! That warmed my heart and so this deck has a very special place for me....
Bookworm Posted February 7, 2018 Posted February 7, 2018 Caroljulie, I love those modern TdMs too. Gorgeous.
EmpyreanKnight Posted February 8, 2018 Author Posted February 8, 2018 The Corte dei Tarocchi gives me life, Carojulie. <3 I like its aesthetic a lot. When I looked it up, I can't believe it's just a recent creation. I thought it was an antique deck or something. Also - does it really have golden tints?
