Gypsy Spread and the humbling effect of numbers

The number of unique permutations of a Gypsy spread is thought to be around 1.3048 x 10^31.

That is a big number. It is larger than the estimated number of stars in the observable universe. If each permutation was represented by a hydrogen atom, the ball of permutations would be so big that it would extend beyond our solar system. In terms of time, if you were able to draw a spread every second, it would take you longer than the life of the universe to-date to cover every permutation.

The number is so big that even if you estimate that there have been 2 billion decks printed (an over estimate). If you then estimate that every deck managed to pull 50,000 gypsy spreads in it's working life (again a stupidly large over estimate). That would be a Trillion permutations. Which represents 0.000000000000000766% of all possible permutations.

Which brings me to this. Someone comes to you and you lay out a Gypsy spread. I can say that spread is almost certainly as unique. Just as that person, asking you to read, is unique. And that thought sends shivers down my spine.

@MrMole Do you have an example of this spread?  The one @akiva describes I think is the Romany Spread

Yes, sorry, I should have been clearer. 3 rows of 7. The rows represent past (closest to you), present and future (closest to the querent).

I have used this spread many times and the version I first saw (and use now) has 3 cards above the 3 rows. The first card you lay - in the middle of the 3 - represents the querent. It always provides some insight about the querent in relation to the question. The card to the left represents the querent's goals related to the question. The card to the right represents the outcome. Then, I lay the 3 rows of 7, right to left for some reason.

Read the first card (the querent) first.

What each row means is different in the version I use - the rows are read multiple ways. Top row is the head, so it represents anything mental (decisions, attitudes, etc.). Middle row is the heart (feelings, passions). Bottom row is the physical (resources to draw on, etc.). Past to present is read in these areas from right to left. First I look at patterns (how many major arcana, how many individual cards such as kings or 5s, how many of each suit, etc. and where do all of these fall). I read each row. I look at past as whole, present as a whole, etc. Then I look at head, heart, physical individually.

Then the REALLY interesting part of the GYPSY spread that often gives excellent insight - you combine the cards from the 3 rows - combine 1 with 21, 2 with 20, 3 with 19, etc. Read the combos. And you have one card left as an outcome.

Finally look at the two cards next to the querent card.

This is one of my favorite spreads and I have used it for more than 15 years. I found it on Aeclectic Tarot, I believe.

This is the Romany spread I have always wanted to use, but I've never found anything with enough information on it. I'll admit it's been a long time since I've looked. Does anyone want to share their spreads and position considerations? Please? Pretty please?

I don't use this spread often, but the way I have used it is very similar to how this website describes it.

A lot of examples online skip over the reading of the 7 columns, but I find it adds so much depth to the reading. My column meanings vary from theirs, but it's easy to make your own up anyway. 😊

Thank you @akiva.  This reading link you've provided makes good sense. I think I had one with near future and distant future and I think it started laying cards from the bottom right and without any reasoning that just confused me so I dropped it. I might go looking again.

No problem, I hope it sparks your interest in the spread again! 😄
