How does the Empress show up in your readings?

Featured Replies

I’ve been spending time with the Empress lately, and I’m realizing she behaves very differently depending on the context.

Sometimes she feels nurturing.

Sometimes she feels like growth or expansion.

Sometimes she feels like boundaries.

Sometimes she feels like “take care of yourself first.”

And sometimes she feels like something else entirely.

I’m curious how other readers experience her.

When the Empress appears in your readings, what does she usually point to for you?

Is she a person?

An energy?

A situation?

A reminder?

Something emotional?

I’m not looking for textbook meanings, just really interested in how she feels or shows up for you when she appears.

Personally in my readings, I know she is the "Mother archetype" but I have rarely seen her show up literally like that. Like she has maternal qualities in my readings but not exactly like a Mother or fits that role exactly. Queens seem to show up for this role in my readings. However she is often fertile and blossoming and nurturing as themes. She represents a universal Mother for me, an energy, rather than literal.

I don't recall pulling the Empress very often in my readings, but I generally look at the image and how the card relates to the other cards around it, and then let my intuition tell me what that card stands for or means.  Every time will be different because every reading and every day is different.

I'm with DanielUK on the archetypal mother when I see the Empress in the RWS.  But in the Anna K Tarot I get a much different feeling, more like Mother Earth and an Uh-Oh-What-has-she-gone-and-done-this-time-? kind of feeling.  It doesn't help that the image reminds me of a former friend of mine.  She was the kind of friend that would help bury the body if I needed her to.  There is still abundance but I'd start looking looking to make sure there's no arsenic in her pantry because she's done or is about to do something that isn't quite right.

Thank you all for taking the time to respond.

I like seeing how differently the Empress shows up for each of you. The archetypal mother energy, the idea that she shifts from day to day, and the way she feels in the Anna K deck with that strong, earthy presence are all interesting to read.

From everyone’s replies, she seems to change depending on the deck, the situation, and the reader’s relationship with her. That actually helps me understand why she has been showing up in different ways for me lately.

If you’re open to sharing more, I’m curious about something.

When she appears strongly for you, what usually brings that out?

A certain deck?
A certain type of question?
A certain mood or situation?

Thank you again. I’m really enjoying hearing how she behaves in other people’s readings.

I just saw a deck (The Fairy Tale Tarot, by Lisa Hunt) in which The Empress is depicted as the fairy godmother from the Cinderella story! How good is that? In terms of her effect on a person? And of course, reversed, she could be the Bad Fairy in Sleeping Beauty, couldn't she? Love it already, and I've just ordered the deck. 😀

That’s such a great depiction — the fairy godmother fits her energy really well, and reversed as the Sleeping Beauty fairy is a perfect contrast.

I took a moment to look up Lisa Hunt’s deck after reading your reply, and seeing the Empress card in context makes your description even better. It’s a really interesting take on her, and I’m glad you mentioned it.

I’d love to hear what you think of the deck once it arrives and you’ve had a chance to work with her version of the Empress.

@Darrell I will definitely keep you posted for when the deck arrives and I have a chance to 'try' it. I do hope it's easy to shuffle and handle. I have too many decks with imagery that I love, but the card stock and /or size is problematic. I want to just be able to USE this deck straight out of the box.

If you think about 'godmother' and how the concept differs from 'mother,' it can throw up a lot of new ideas for the Empress card. A godmother is somebody who has agreed to look after the welfare of a young person, to offer assistance if they get into difficulty, to support them emotionally if they need support, and possibly to give them gifts (both physical gifts on certain occasions and the gift of opportunity and potential, if they can. A godmother is a woman whom the god-child can petition if they need a boost, but who is not legally obligated to raise them.

A FAIRY godmother is all I mentioned, plus she has powers beyond the human sort. That is in keeping with The Empress being more a force of nature than a human being who bears children. The concept of magical powers working on behalf of the god-child can certainly add to weight of The Empress card.

A reversed Empress can indicate the absence of these qualities, or the reversal of the qualities. The reversed Empress may use her powers (human or supernatural) to deliberately cause trouble for the god-child. Lots to explore.

Sometimes The Empress, as traditionally seen, can feel a bit vague to me, if she's not directly connected to fertility or creativity ...or 'mom.' This fairy godmother aspect opens up more ways to interpret the card.

For me Empress is one of those cards that relies on context. Well, I suppose all cards rely on context ...

Is the question about family dynamics and relationships?

Empress is often someone's mom. Literally. Is the couple trying to get pregnant? Empress can show pregnancy [with other cards].

Is the question about business?

Empress is often either a creative or an entrepreneur. She's prosperous and creative--although she might go over budget--so gotta watch for the money cards.

Health?

Empress is often herbal--plant-based medicine.

Lifestyle?

Empress can mean too much of a good thing. Overindulgence in food, sex, shopping. And for some readings, pregnancy is NOT welcome news. So there's that.

Spirituality?

Empress is the quintessential Nature Goddess. Fortuna. Mother Nature. Demeter. Fertile gardens and farms from blessed earth. A good haul from fishing. An abundant harvest. She might be a witchy earth mother type of person. The one who feeds all the stray kids and puts out a water bowl for feral cats and stray dogs. She rescues birds and other wildlife. A Fairy Godmother in real life as @Chariot mentions.
