Whisper Posted February 19, 2018 Posted February 19, 2018 Of all the Pagan Tarot sets, which do you find: a) the most Pagan/Wiccan. (Truest to Paganism/Wicca)? b) the most eloquent for a Pagan/Wiccan? c) the one with the best accompanying book related to Paganism? d) the most evocative? e) the easiest to read with? Thank you.
EmpyreanKnight Posted February 19, 2018 Posted February 19, 2018 The Pagan Otherworlds Tarot is my favorite, followed closely by the Modern Spellcaster's Tarot <3 They're evocative, they give clear readings, and they're aesthetically very pleasing. :)

They look great, each in its own way. Thank you. What do you think of The Book of Shadows tarot?
EmpyreanKnight Posted February 20, 2018 Posted February 20, 2018 I don't have the 2 volumes of the Book of Shadows so I won't be able to authoritatively comment on it. But I do like them. :)
Jewel Posted February 20, 2018 Posted February 20, 2018 I really like the Green Witch Tarot (it is the deck I am using this month). It feels pagan to me, very earth based. I have also been enjoying the book. Not sure if it meets your criteria but it is pretty easy to read with.

Had it in my hand, yesterday, and put it down in favour of that other deck I mentioned elsewhere here that I regret buying! Should have listened to my first instinct. Are the cards small, or a little a little bigger? It is quite up my alley because of its Celtic/Wiccan theme. Kicking myself, now.

Are the cards small, or a little a little bigger? It is quite up my alley because of its Celtic/Wiccan theme. Kicking myself, now. Yes, the cards are small, easy to shuffle. Some people might say the card stock is flimsy, but frankly I like easy to shuffle decks, and I love that it is borderless. I have been working with that deck all of this month and done several really serious readings for myself and I really love it. It has been everything it told me it would in the new deck interview spread I did with it. The messages are consistent, and I see that in the patterns of cards (suits, numbers, elements, etc) I get in readings that have relations to each other. Some card meanings differ from the RWS, but it has not been hard to pick up at all because overall it does follow that system. Some majors have been renamed as well, but again overall I have found the deck easy to work with. It was the first deck I got for myself in years and I think I made the right choice. I have since bought 3 other decks, but it has not been their month yet LOL.
Canid Posted February 21, 2018 Posted February 21, 2018 Druidcraft, hands down. It’s been my go-to for years, plus Moon Garden...plus...now it’s Viceversa, but that’s really not considered pagan, is it? Sure could/should be.

Albadawn Posted February 22, 2018 Posted February 22, 2018 It would be remiss if I didn't pipe up with the Tarot of Pagan Cats. It's a fantastic deck!

Carojulie Posted February 22, 2018 Posted February 22, 2018 Hi ! For questions b,c,d and e, I would answer the Druidcraft tarot without hesitation. The deck is great, very old celtic religion earth based, easy reader, true to RWS but with its own personality, good cardstock (I trimmed my copy to borderless with titles kept). It is an all times favourite of mine. The book is very good, although I dont use it. The Wildwood is also very good, but less classic (it does not follow closely the usual systems.... there is some RWS in it, but not always). I love that the courts are animals. The book is based on the wheel of the year, and is really good and would even deserve to be read even if you dont have the deck. I dont like that deck as much as I like the Druidcraft though. But its a good deck, and many people swear by this deck. For question a, I cannot answer. Wicca is not something I have been very much into so far, so I wouldn't know. But I have a feeling that the Druidcraft might be worth looking into, under that angle ; and probably the Wildwood too. I am not entirely sure I understand all that "pagan" means either, and everything that is put behind the word ; it's very cultural and depends on who uses the word I think. Please pardon me if I talk nonsense ; I am absolutly aware of wicca and pagan, but dont know all the details. My other "witchy" decks include the Motherpeace, the Greenwitch, the Everyday Witch, the Jolanda, Tarot of the Old Path.... The Jolanda is a different system and I dont use it a lot. It's very cute but also quite powerful. The Greenwitch is quite nice but I personaly prefer the Druidcraft so far. The Everyday Witch is cute, but more of a novelty to me. It makes me smile but I cannot seem to take it really seriously. The Motherpeace is a wonderful, wonderful deck. Not sure it is pagan, though. But it is a monster of a deck, in all the good senses/ways. I recommand it to everybody. Tarot of the Old Path never really did it for me, I have not used it much, but that is mostly because I find the art a little boring. I do not have the Robin Hood myself, but a pagan friend of mine says that it is his favourite deck. Good luck in your quest, and tell use what you find !
AJ-ish/Sharyn Posted February 23, 2018 Posted February 23, 2018 The mother of pagan decks is the Greenwood.
Carojulie Posted February 23, 2018 Posted February 23, 2018 The mother of pagan decks is the Greenwood. Ah yes. I wish I had that one. Not easy to find, though. The Wildwood is the heir of the Greenwood. Same author, though different illustrators. The Greenwood cards images are open for personnal reproduction (not commercial reproduction). I wish I kew how to use them to make myself a physical workable deck.... but I dont know how to do.
Jewel Posted February 23, 2018 Posted February 23, 2018 Tarot of the Old Path and the Robin Wood were my reading decks when I truly got started with Tarot (meaning when I finally quit trying to connect with the RWS that was not doing it for me). I have the books for both, but it has been so many years that honestly I cannot remember how good or bad they were at this point. I still love both of those decks even if I haven't used them in eons, I would never trade them. I used them for several years until I got the Fey and Cosmic Tribe, then those became my favorite reading decks for another few years. I really connected with Tarot of the Old Path, and loved the imagery and found it easy to read with, with the exception of the court cards I really struggled with those. They are very static and "samey" but wearing different (elementally based) colored outfits. It follows the RWS very closely so it was easy to follow tarot books available 30 years ago (mainly all about the RWS) with both of those decks. I found the Tarot of the Old Path to feel very spiritual to me, and pagan feeling (earth based faith including. I think what I liked about the Tarot of the Old Path is that I felt the elemental connection, which has always been one of the systems that helps me read the cards. Bot the Robin Wood and Tarot of the Old Path I think are very suitable for readers of all levels as they are so RWS based. I love the Majors of the Tarot of the Old Path. I will say that the Cosmic Tribe feels very modern/techno-pagan (that is a mouth full lol) and somewhat new-agey I suppose, but that is a deck that people usually love or hate, the minors are not fully illustrated, and non-sexual nudity is one of the design elements of the deck. They are what I call "moody-minors", not plain pips but not fully illustrated either (think Thoth). But the elemental feel to that deck is wonderful and one of the reasons that I will forever love it. I also have The Healing Tarot, which is an indie deck published eons ago which is Wicca based, but I never really ended up connecting with it.
EmpyreanKnight Posted February 23, 2018 Posted February 23, 2018 Btw, HERE is a list of pagan and/or wiccan Tarot decks. I didn't know that there were so many!
Carojulie Posted February 23, 2018 Posted February 23, 2018 Hey Knight, thank you for this list ! ^-^ But I am surprised that the DruidCraft did not make it into this list ? There are many other ideas though !
Canid Posted February 23, 2018 Posted February 23, 2018 The mother of pagan decks is the Greenwood. I’ve never had it *sob*.

The Wildwood is the heir of the Greenwood. Same author, though different illustrators. This is one area where I disagree 100% The Wildwood is a total ripoff. Total.
Carojulie Posted February 23, 2018 Posted February 23, 2018 Ah ? OK. I certainly cannot argue since I dont have the Greenwood. What makes you say that ? They have the same author, haven't they ? I thought that the Wildwood was a reinterpretation of the Greenwood, with the same system, only by a different illustrator ? (which can make a huge difference, we agree on that)
Saturn Celeste Posted February 23, 2018 Posted February 23, 2018 Btw, HERE is a list of pagan and/or wiccan Tarot decks. I didn't know that there were so many! I have a lot of the decks on that list. I think of my decks I consider the Witches Tarot, Robin Wood and BOS Volume 1 (As Above) the most pagan. They all have excellent companion books. I think Robin Wood you need to get separately. I love the the book to the Witches Tarot also. I use the As Above deck the least. I have the 2nd Volume So Below also and I tend to read with that more than I do the BOS vol 1.
