Jewel Posted March 15, 2018 Posted March 15, 2018 I have been eyeballing the Chrysalis deck/book set since December. I like the images I have seen, and I do understand that it is non traditional. I have also read some reviews, but I wanted to get your opinions on the deck and book. What are your experiences with this deck. I would really love some honest personal opinions. All opinions are welcome :)
Saturn Celeste Posted March 15, 2018 Posted March 15, 2018 I love the deck! I do a lot of writer readings, (readings for people who write on a writer's site I belong to) and it's perfect for storytelling. That's the premise of the deck, they are storyteller archetypes. If you write and need guidance the deck is exceptional. It's also a very nice deck to use for regular tarot readings.

All opinions are welcome :) I've seen it and it is beautiful. I think it offers its own vision, so, even if a pagan/wiccan deck, it deviates from the traditional. The cards are a good size and its energy seems quite vibrant. I believe it is a very popular Tarot from what I've seen around the internet.
MollyCat Posted March 15, 2018 Posted March 15, 2018 Jewell, I have the Chrysalis in app form, published by Fool's Dog in both Android and Apple formats. It costs about $5.00. It's a very fresh look at Tarot and, although it uses the same structure, there are substantial differences. IX Hermit is called Storyteller for example. Almost all the major arcana have different names. The minor arcana are grouped as Stones, Mirrors, Spirals and Scrolls. The app contains the entire text from the book but an interpretation of each card is given as you 'draw' the image in a reading. The deck was 'written' by Toney Brooks, a former broadcaster turned metaphysical student and spiritual counsellor. The art is by Holly Sierra who has also worked as a children's book illustrator. I attach a copy of the card for Temperance mainly because I love sunflowers. You can accept the interpretations or go your own way with this deck. There is a facility in the app whereby you can order the deck itself. The app allows you to try before you buy, and to always have the deck with you. I use the Chrysalis from time to time when I feel like something different. Tarot is simply as a spiritual voice for me and Chrysalis lends itself well to this purpose.
Mi-Shell Posted March 16, 2018 Posted March 16, 2018 From my blog: Crysalis Tarot crystallised I received the Crysalis Tarot as a present in 2016 and had been looking forward for some time to look at it and work with it. Finally that time came
Jewel Posted March 16, 2018 Author Posted March 16, 2018 Thank you guys so much! This is exactly the type of feedback I am looking for. MollyCat[/member] don't laugh too hard at me but I still use a flip phone! LOL apps are not my thing, I like my cards and books tangible ;D. The info you gave me is super useful and I really like that temperance card. I really have no issue with renaming of cards (I have been studying Tarot for close to 30 years) so I really am open to trying new things and adding variety to my collection :) That Temperance card is lovely! I also do not get hung up on traditional (but not "stock")meanings, my reading style is a combination of traditional and intuitive. The overall spread, positioning, patterns and such influences combined with meaning and intuition are what most influence my readings. Mi-Shell[/member] that review was very useful. I think I probably share some of your issues.
MollyCat Posted March 16, 2018 Posted March 16, 2018 Thanks, Jewel :) I understand your preference for images you can hold, examine, and move around as you wish! The ritual of putting time and a special place aside to contemplate and read. Now that I have more time I will probably do more of that myself. When I began with Tarot, there were no smartphones and no apps. I succumbed to the portability and the immediate access which apps give. I decided for budgetary reasons not to buy the Chrysalis Tarot and book. There were other decks I wanted more but I could get the whole thing for just $5.00 in an app, a bargain too good to refuse. I had to smile at Mi-Shell's comments and see her point. One of the things about the Chrysalis for me was the difference and the wonderful innovation of some of the images. Just now I'm looking at the Ace of Stones as an example. I love it!
EmpyreanKnight Posted March 19, 2018 Posted March 19, 2018 I personally have this deck, and I had a very productive time working with it. I love the vivd, jewel tones of the images. Some of the card depictions are very unique, and yeah it has a system all its own. Aesthetically, this deck delivered the goods. When I first had it, the companion book hasn't been published yet. There was a highly informative site that was managed by the creators that discussed each card in awesome detail. That resource was very helpful. Last I checked it was still standing. Anyway, the companion book is available quite cheaply, so you may want to purchase it too if you prefer. I haven't bought a copy myself, tho that's something that shall be rectified ;) ).

If I decide to get it I will most likely get the deck/book set .... I am such a sucker for those lol. Probably because they look so nice on my bookshelves, and helps me keep the deck and book all in one place when not in use lol.

I noticed that I find some decks more tempting when I figure out that they have companion tomes. And yup, they do look nice on a shelf. :)
