Samual_Jennings Posted April 17, 2018 Posted April 17, 2018 I'm thinking about creating a themed deck based off of the Rider-Waite deck. I would like it to contain (almost) as much symbolism as the original Rider-Waite deck. Any theme ideas?
Guest Posted April 17, 2018 Posted April 17, 2018 I had an idea for a musical deck, but you would have to have a fair amount of musical theory....anywho give each card a musical association, notes, measures, phrases, etc. a spread then in addition to a typical reading would have a small song written out... i have not thought it out too deeply it was an idea i had when I saw a Physics deck here. But it bounces through my head still from time to time.

Say, someone had a song stuck in their head for no apparent reason. They could correspond it to a spread, and possibly find out why. This could be a plausible way to unite music with tarot. I'll try it. Thank you.
Guest Posted April 17, 2018 Posted April 17, 2018 any string of notes would have a corresponding spread, yes. I would suggest just writing the notes on the cards and see what happens. There are already a couple systems of correspondence that entail musical notes so it is not necessary to start from scratch. I am not versed in the GD systems but I can only assume that they as well have notes assigned to the zodiacs and planets or to the tree of life in a such a fashion that at the very least the major arcana is already worked out for the RWS deck. I could rattle off the correspondences I know, but those are not what you would need to use for an RWS clone, sorry. and I am tempted to believe this has been done before in some way to a greater or lesser extent since the western tempered musical scale is composed of twelve notes and 7 whole tones it can not be a novel idea. I think all the information to do this with is already out there. the hard part is making it sound good ;)
Samual_Jennings Posted April 17, 2018 Author Posted April 17, 2018 You do make a valid point. I don't really want to reinvent the wheel here. Ok, pretty much scratch that idea. Any other theme ideas?
PathWalker Posted April 18, 2018 Posted April 18, 2018 I'm honestly not sure what you hope to achieve here? Are you talking about making a personal use deck - then surely it needs to be a theme you feel strongly connected to? If you're thinking of making a commercial deck - why would anyone give you THEIR ideas? I have a pet project, I expect lots of folks do - but it's for MY deck, not or anyone to make use of? If I've missed the point I do apologise. PathWalker
Raggydoll Posted April 18, 2018 Posted April 18, 2018 I would be interested to see/hear about your art style and what type of methods you intend to use. That would have a huge impact on what kind of theme that would suit you. Also, like pathwalker, I am curious to hear what your intentions with this project are. And I agree that it is probably best if you choose your own theme so that you can find the passion and inspiration it would take to illustrate that many cards. For most creators this type of project takes a year or more to complete so you will want to choose your theme carefully and make sure your heart and soul is all invested in your project. And I wish you the best of luck with all of that!

Perhaps seeing your artwork may give us a better idea on suggestions for you. And welcome to TT&M!

Samual_Jennings Posted April 18, 2018 Author Posted April 18, 2018 As for my motive, I mostly want it for personal use; but I may want to have it as an option for some of my customers too, once the art is good enough.
Raggydoll Posted April 18, 2018 Posted April 18, 2018 Sounds interesting! My vote is for a contemporary and very inclusive RWS clone. One that depicts regular people and not just standard-pretty people that seem to belong in glossy magazines ::). That would probably appeal to your clients as well ^-^
