Samual_Jennings Posted April 18, 2018 Posted April 18, 2018 Hello. I'm starting to make a New York City themed Rider-Waite Deck. This is the Emperor. (P.S.- These cards are just sketches.) Sent from my LG-M153 using Tapatalk

AJ-ish/Sharyn Posted April 18, 2018 Posted April 18, 2018 welcome Samuel. There are a couple new york decks, I expect the connection to tarot images/symbology is endless. Go for it!
Samual_Jennings Posted April 18, 2018 Author Posted April 18, 2018 welcome Samuel. There are a couple new york decks, I expect the connection to tarot images/symbology is endless. Go for it! I'm trying to carry over the symbolism of the RWS Deck, while capturing the spirit of New York. Let me ask you this. Do you know the reason for the images in the cards? If you do, I have succeeded in making them.
AJ-ish/Sharyn Posted April 18, 2018 Posted April 18, 2018 the twin towers as your tower, a whole new way of viewing what we have taken for granted, a true wake up call. the emperor not so clear, but for me that is common in most decks, I have a proclivity to disdain emperors in general. I'll bet it has something to do with the red cap though. try two or three minors and see if you can get strong images for them.

Other than the pun, the meaning has to do with the reason for building it. It was the tallest building in the world at one point. It was a symbol of America's strength. Later, the Twin Towers were a symbol of America's strength. They were soon destroyed. But riddle me this. What associates the yods with the Twin Towers?
Samual_Jennings Posted April 18, 2018 Author Posted April 18, 2018 Yod are the 10th letter of the Hebrew alphabet. They represent the devine. I have a belief that God, in a way, was punishing America for its recent actions. He took away their pride. "Pride comes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall." P.S.-There were yod on the original Tower too
Saturn Celeste Posted April 18, 2018 Posted April 18, 2018 Do you live in NYC? If so, take some photos. If you don't live there, perhaps you can find some royalty free or public domain images to use? I lived there a long time ago and loved it! You could draw your Major Arcana cards from Manhattan, then use the other Burroughs of NYC for the suits. Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx and Staten Island. Just a thought. ;)

Just a thought. ;) Your idea for suits is interesting. I might try that. But no, I don't live in New York. Besides, using pictures would take away some of the symbolism. Saturn Celeste Posted April 18, 2018 Posted April 18, 2018 Glad to help! I loved living there, the city really never sleeps!
Samual_Jennings Posted April 18, 2018 Author Posted April 18, 2018 You should see most rural towns. Most lights out by 9pm; then everybody up at the crack of dawn. Personally, my suburban life is somewhere between these two polar opposites. Sent from my LG-M153 using Tapatalk
