Guest KnightsQuest Posted May 19, 2018 Posted May 19, 2018 Hello, I'm New to the forum and i wanted to ask what is your favorite art medium that you prefer to use, i mainly work with digital art on Photoshop you can spend time improving things until you are happy with it, and creating an image is more easier to do as i like using simple colour techniques with my artwork. I've been creating a medieval fantasy deck based on knights and dragons called '' Knights Quest Tarot, it follows the Rider Waite structure with some familiar cards that you will recognize.
RavenOfSummer Posted May 19, 2018 Posted May 19, 2018 Hi KnightsQuest, welcome to the forum! ^-^ I'm not much of a visual artist myself so can't offer anything in relation to your question, but just wanted to say I went to your website and really like your deck! I love your takes on the Lovers and Empress especially. Thank you for sharing those! Looking forward to following your progress ^-^
Guest KnightsQuest Posted May 19, 2018 Posted May 19, 2018 Hey thanks for your kind support, ;-) The Rider Waite is my all time favourite deck, i wanted to create my own concept it and it's always good to get some feedback on what i've done. I have completed the Majors and Courts and i've only another 10 cards to go, my initial idea was for a black and white deck as you see on my blog, but i think publishers would want a coloured deck if i was to go down that route. I love seeing how artists colour their work, everyone as a different technique
RavenOfSummer Posted May 19, 2018 Posted May 19, 2018 I know there are a couple of indie decks that were published in both color and black and white versions...the Efflorescent Tarot is the one I remember off the top of my head and I think there are more. Maybe something like that would interest you, especially if you go the self-publishing route ^-^
Guest KnightsQuest Posted May 19, 2018 Posted May 19, 2018 I like the detailing on the efflorescence deck, that could be something i would be interested in doing. At the moment i'm still experimenting with the colouring side i could go with having two versions of the deck i've been given some great tips from artists, i will be posting more of my cards on my blog over the next few weeks :) Yes i have been thinking about self publishing, that would be something i will look into when the deck is completed.
Page of Ghosts Posted May 22, 2018 Posted May 22, 2018 I'm very into watercolours - you can make them sort of flat or add more dimension/texture to them with different techniques. Digital seems fun and I envy being able to move things around and erase easily, but I'm too much of a fan of physical art supplies to go digital myself ^-^
Guest KnightsQuest Posted May 22, 2018 Posted May 22, 2018 Hello Page of Ghost, I envy artists that can do it the traditional way, i can't seem to add the correct water pressure when using watercolours my paper/canvas always end up in a big mess. :D I watch many artists on youtube it's great seeing how they create their art and learning new techniques. :)
Page of Ghosts Posted May 23, 2018 Posted May 23, 2018 Hello Page of Ghost, I envy artists that can do it the traditional way, i can't seem to add the correct water pressure when using watercolours my paper/canvas always end up in a big mess. :D I watch many artists on youtube it's great seeing how they create their art and learning new techniques. :) Most decent watercolour paper should handle some layers of moving paint along and even rubbing it in before the paper gets overworked (Winsor & Newton has some fairly cheap 300 gsm paper that is very good for the price!) but I have some across some super cheap paper from TGR/Tiger/Flying Tiger that didn't like me moving the paint around at all! The paper actually pilled very quickly and was super disappointing so it ended up as test sheets for colours. It said it was 300 gsm which is a good medium thickness but it didn't say what it was made of... so I'll be suspicious of that the next time I try out super cheap paper. If it says it's cotton it should be good. Oh, and I also always keep paper towels around when I paint in case I have too much water on my brush or make a mistake - if you're quick about it you can pretty much erase a mistake with some water and a paper towel :)) I suck at stretching the paper so I've been fantasizing about getting some thicker paper. I think over 350 gsm or something your don't have to stretch at all and it won't buckle so it would be perfect, but I like to support my local art supply store so it's probably a little expensive >:D I don't subscribe to or watch too many art accounts on youtube but I like Doodle Date a lot! They're nice to have in the background if I'm not listening to Kelly Ann Maddox - can't concentrate on just her very long videos alone but they're very nice company when I do other things!
Guest KnightsQuest Posted May 23, 2018 Posted May 23, 2018 I think that's where i went wrong by not using a thicker type paper with water colours, a friend of mine uses Arches paper and I did notice a big difference between the 300 and 140 gsm, i noticed my paper took significantly more paint to get the same colour saturation and the colours dried slowly. i've now started using background Textures with Photoshop which can help with creating more contrasts and depth. :)
Guest Posted May 23, 2018 Posted May 23, 2018 traditional I use Micron pens and Copic markers. on the computer I use Autodesk Sketchbook for bulk of the art work. Photoshop for post production and the more finicky work. In-Design for layout work and prep for the printer.
Guest KnightsQuest Posted May 23, 2018 Posted May 23, 2018 Hi there, I'm currently using Sakura Pigma Drawing Pens, they come in several brush tip sizes i find them good for line drawings and for larger black ink coverage.
Guest Posted May 24, 2018 Posted May 24, 2018 yeah a Sukura is a Micron. Sakura si the parent company. I use 005 05 and 08. I stick to stay gray scale and use a set of warm gray Sketch markers for the shading. If I intend to go to color I move the art into the computer, it is too expensive for me to keep an arsenal of Copic markers on hand that are all locked up, since I don't draw enough in color they dry out. Autodesk sketchbook imitates the microns and Copic markers almost perfectly. They offer brush sets that mimic them
Guest KnightsQuest Posted May 24, 2018 Posted May 24, 2018 Do you have your own website or blog, it would be nice to see everyone's artwork in progress
Guest Posted May 24, 2018 Posted May 24, 2018 Do you have your own website or blog, it would be nice to see everyone's artwork in progress not a website right now, but my daughter did have me scan some of my notebooks a few years ago to deviant art and I have a few threads here i started for some tarot cards I am designing. just search this deck creation directory there is no finished art any where for me though, it's all concept art as yet I am still in the design stages.... :o
Guest KnightsQuest Posted May 24, 2018 Posted May 24, 2018 I really like how you used the shadowing on your artwork you should try maybe create a Majors only deck, i know 78 cards can be off putting but it's been a good learning process for me i really like your technique. :)

I will be done by Christmas. Sent from my Moto Z (2) using Tapatalk
reall Posted May 25, 2018 Posted May 25, 2018 Ok, I’ve practically created acc here so I can comment on this topic!:) (after noticing it’s good forum for topics concerning Tarot deck creators
Guest KnightsQuest Posted May 26, 2018 Posted May 26, 2018 Okay it took me a while to read the info but it was well worth it, thanks reall and i've taken note not to use reds and light green and blue colours, my Hermit will probably suffer the most it's saturated in those greens and blues. :) i will probably tone down the colours on my cards. Over the last few weeks i have used a printing company and the test prints were pretty good for the black and white version, the Templates and guidelines were easy to use, but i will also try other printers when the deck is completed.
reall Posted May 26, 2018 Posted May 26, 2018 you are welcome! your lineart look great all you need is good background!:) I have some samples previews from img you posted in your web but can't post img or add attach in post or pm or email so this is not meant to happen?!x,x lolz p.s i'm taking back all I've said about this forum being user friendly for creators!x,x facepalm lolz all best! reall/Irena
reall Posted May 26, 2018 Posted May 26, 2018 whatsawhosit[/member] nice pen work!:) I have only 3 majors & courts to finish so hopefully my Tarot will be published before ny!:)
Guest Posted May 26, 2018 Posted May 26, 2018 ............... p.s i'm taking back all I've said about this forum being user friendly for creators!x,x facepalm lolz ??? why is that? i would have to actually disagree with you. the people are on this forum may be a bit too nice for deck creation.... Even though you have not ever posted a card here or taken part in the community as far as deck creation is concerned, you have decided first how "friendly" we are and then decided we were "not so friendly." I was hoping you would start your own thread and show us some of your hard work, you appeared to have a reasonable command of color theory, it seems reasonable that you would have some interesting art. So please do start a thread and let us at you, before you decide how we roll around here. In my opinion it is completely improper to make such a sweeping statement about the forum based upon editing a single post down a bit. This is a very young forum still, everyone from the owner to the moderators to the least us are all still finding the groove having mostly come from a very old forum that was very mature in comparison. So please don't judge us too harsh or rashly . ;)
reall Posted May 26, 2018 Posted May 26, 2018 whatsawhosit[/member] Ups! sorry! I didn't mean forum as people but rules!:) I decided on *friendlines seeing topic visible from front page & open for anyone to read without need to log in as some forum require, & *unfriendliness when i was unable to post any links(& I need that for *Best printer list!:) & now I see new members need 5 comments to post links!:) so, ok that's not that bad!:) also attachment option is too small?x,x is max img size 1mb or something?x,x & pm/email option work similiar?x,x facepalm I didn't mean any personal offense & I do apologize for any misunderstanding my comment caused?!^^;) I do hope we all get along well & get more Tarot creators here to share our info?:) ETA; now I have 5posts & all links posted!:) so please take a look at new topics & post what you think?:) will add more later!:) all best! reall/irena
Guest KnightsQuest Posted May 26, 2018 Posted May 26, 2018 I have never been on a forum like this before, it's great to have so many helpful and skillful people who can join in and give their guidance on creating decks i would like to see more members join in, i wasn't aware that this forum was quite new i assumed it had been here for years. :)

The big old legend among tarot forums, Aeclectic Tarot Forum, closed down last summer after around 15 years and a lot of new ones sprung up. This is the one I settled on and I quite like it. The 5 post rule or something similar was on AT and I think it's to prevent spam and other not so fun things. I remember there was a post limit on accessing the readings sections because there had been some issues there as well. I'm not sure how it is here now, most of the early members were old AT users so it was pretty lax to begin with but we might have changed some things up later.
