"Hi, I'm unable to post in your thread, can I have a reading?"

I had no idea where to put it, so I suppose we can chatter about it.

I often get messages from members who has less than five posts, about them wanting a reading. They claim they have "no idea why" they cannot post in the exchange area. So, I wonder, should this be more clearly explained in big letters (and a neon sign) in the exchange area?

Also, I am sure I am not the only one who get these messages, so what do you answer?

I don't want to be rude, but I don't want to just give out free readings to non-members either.

For members, and especially those I have talked to, or exchanged readings with in the past, I'd love to do a reading for you via message if you feel a subject is too private to post on the forum.

I guess what I am trying to discuss is, what do we say to the members with 0 posts that PM us to ask for readings? Can we have some good sticky post or whatever explaining that we're here to learn and have a community, not just offer free readings to "hit and run" members?

Hi hierophant.  I appreciate your desire to help members with less than 5 posts but that would be going against the rules of the forum.  We want new members to post here in the forum to get to know the other members and get a feel for the community.  Five posts are very easy to accumulate quickly, just posting on an introduction thread often garners the 5 posts right away.  We encourage all new members to read the rules and mission statement of the site.  It is mentioned that TT&M is a learning forum and that they need 5 posts before receiving a reading for themselves.  Each section of the forum has it's own rules thread handy for all new members to read.  While we do have these rules posted, we don't want to appear demanding so we allow new members to find out for themselves how the forum works.  If there are a lot of "can't do this and can't do that" around, it might not seem like such a friendly place that we are.  ^-^  And I do appreciate your concern, hierophant!  It's always good when members want to give their input on the forum.  Thank you!  :))

I probably worded this wrong. I'm sorry. What I meant was: I do NOT want to to give these member free readings! Not at all. I want them to post their five posts and post in the thread. But if there could be a sticky post or something I could send them to?

I've had some messaging me 5-10 times to have me explain how to post in the area, and not being willing to accept that one has to have 5 posts to do so.

I guess my concern is this: I sound like a cranky old lady every time I reject them. I don't want to be rude, but I don't want to offer these members who never post anything free readings via message either.

(But if an established member that I have befriended wanted a reading on a delicate matter, I would of course help them out. It's not like my inbox is off limits to members!)

Hmmm... Hopefully what I meant was more understandable this time.

It does say it in the rules, it explains all the membership levels. It's at the top of the index here

perhaps it needs to go in the rules of the exchange areas or link there as well perhaps I think is hierophant's suggestion

Hierophant, if you are having members PMing you to read them, please redirect them to me.  This way you won't have to commit yourself to do a job that the staff can do.  <3  But also keep in mind, we are not supposed to do readings through the Pm system either.  If you want to read someone else in private, please do it offsite through your email or facebook. ;)

I know. Which is why I have not read for those with no posts who PMs me. (Also, I am lazy, and I only do readings here for exchanges for the learning experience).

But are we not allowed to, like send someone we exchange readings with something like "I felt this particular sentence was too personal, so here it is, the rest of the reading is in the thread". I know a lot of people feel very exposed when receiving a reading, so I guess I had thought this would be okay?

Here is rule 8 from the rules list:

8. All readings must be done in the Reading Exchange forums.

Please do not ask for reading exchanges through PM or elsewhere.  This is to make sure that an equal exchange is being made and that the rules are met.

Again, if you do want to read someone from the forum for privacy, set up a way to do so off from the site.  We would appreciate that!  :))

I think I keep wording myself wrong, so I'll leave it alone.

Thank you for the answers.

It's OK hierophant!  I've passed this thread on to Little Fang so she can see your suggestion.  I think you are asking if we can make it more obvious on the forum that members need 5 posts for the tarot exchange even if they don't read the rules.  I also think you're asking if a sitter's reading is too personal if you can discuss that further in a PM.  If that is the question, only Little Fang can answer that.  I hope I've gotten this right and you were doing fine!  I just needed to make sure I understood (if I HAVE understood!)  ^-^

For example; if they ask for a love reading, and want me to know that they need it because they have been cheated on, or have cheated themselves, before I did the reading. I would understand the need to send this information via pm. And then I would still put the reading in the thread, but answer in a pm "I'm sorry to hear that, your reading is in the thread".

Or, of course, if people don't want to post their name (I use first names for readings).

But my main question was: what do other people reply when getting PMs from people with not enough posts?

And also if not a sticky thread in the exchange area, if I could have some pre made message to reply, that would follow the guidelines?

I get a bit stressed if you think I'm about breaking the rules :p I'm not. I'm just wanting to know how to best proceed with all these requests from members who do not have enough posts yet.

I know when I participated in the monthly exchanges we could post our feedback to the readings we got done for us by our partner in a PM if we wanted to talk about some sensitive info, but the original reading was still in the thread. I think that wasn't in the violation of any rules? I hope not, it was nice for the 1 reading where I felt more comfortable doing that.

I've seen before when I was on AT that some people don't seem to read all the info or stickies and just want to get a free reading. Even back then there was a "X amount of posts before you can post in the tarot readings sub" which was much higher than on here. Maybe it was 20 posts? More? AT was much bigger and very well known so the issues were probably even bigger than on here, people not leaving the feedback they were supposed to when getting help, not giving feedback to the person who read for them etc.

I don't have as much patience as you hierophant, and I don't usually do readings for other people so I don't get these PMs! But 5 posts isn't much for them to get around to, so a message where you gently link them to the rules here: https://www.thetarotforum.com/index.php?action=rules and tell them about those that apply should do the trick! I do something similar if I want to help someone in the Tarot for Yourself-sub and they haven't provided their own interpretation yet. A link to the pinned post and nudging them to get around to typing up their own ideas, however small they are, is enough. Hopefully it should be enough for the people sending you PMs if they aren't the type of person who just want the free reading  :(

Currently mobile with company at the house, but I'm looking into this suggestion. It may be that making either the exchange forum invisible for people under 5 posts, or turning off their PM's until 5 posts could also be considered, but I have to see what is the easiest and best thing. :)

I like the idea of turning off pm for 5 posts..

perhaps a new member jump in forum..

so new members only can make new posts, old pros can reply of course, but the idea is for a palce for new members to get their posts in a good way .

example i thought when i joined kipper readings went into the kipper form, and lennormand readings went into the lenormand forums..

at the time i was looking for anyway to make an reading offer,, as i couldn't  do it in the reading exchange..

On AT it was 25 posts.

Maybe no PMs till you have 5 posts would be good. On carto, I think it's 10.

But I agree with page of ghosts - there can be times when some of a reading - and more especially feedback, needs to be appended by PM.

Muting them sounds like the best option, then members who offer readings are left alone and the newbies can both send PMs and post in the exchange threads at the same time. Hopefully one of options Little Fang suggested will be possible.

I definitely don't have a problem with sensitive info winding up in PM!  Just post at least some of the reading with a note on that in the thread. Figuring out the pm now
