Jewel Posted September 20, 2018 Posted September 20, 2018 I had been thinking about this thread and I do now remember a deck that I had that reaction to, The Bosch Tarot. The 10 of Pentacles was what really threw me over the edge with the ugly little dude pooping out a Pentacle ~shakes head~. There are times I now wish - in a very morbid way - then all I have to do is pull up a picture of that card and I know I did right by getting rid of it. P.S. I am one of those that loves the Deviant Moon >:D, but yeah I can see why some find it disturbing. The photo manipulation of grave stones and abandoned insane asylums can certainly contribute to that feeling. But for some reason I don't even find the deck to be "dark" lol.

I don’t think it’s necessarily a dark deck, but what creeps my out is that it reminds me of mental illnesses. I have witnessed mental illness take over people that were very near and dear to me, so I think this deck triggers ‘shadow material’ for me. But it is still too raw for me to want to explore it further.
Guest Night Shade Posted September 20, 2018 Posted September 20, 2018 If you guys don't like the Sun baby from the World Spirit, keep in mind that this is the "new and improved" baby from the second edition. The original was (rightly) called "the Nixon baby." Trust me, this one is prettier... ;D ;D ;D In the new version of the World Spirit Tarot, they also put some pants on the guy on the Ten of Pentacles! :))

But it is still too raw for me to want to explore it further. The Hermit definitely gives that feel in the Deviant Moon. I usually see the desire for seclusion as a positive but with this version, it’s very much isolation borne of pain. The deck portrays emotions very well - the sad little girl in the 9 of Wands always tugs at my heart strings - I just want to reach in and hug her!
FLizarraga Posted September 20, 2018 Posted September 20, 2018 3) The Nicoletta Ceccoli Tarot. So beautiful, deliciously surreal, yet it gives me a distinct feeling of unease. Can't put my finger on it. So I have never read with it. So far. I really like the Nicoletta Ceccoli Tarot, but I can't figure out if the figure on the Devil card is a giant worm or a giant demon carrot. :)) It’s... disturbing, whatever it is! Portia Posted September 22, 2018 Posted September 22, 2018 The Ceccoli Tarot. I found the imagery disturbing and repellent. My reaction was visceral. I've never felt that way about a deck before. I happily re-homed it to someone who gels with it instead.

I have the pantless version. I like the deck though. ::) The Ceccoli Tarot. I found the imagery disturbing and repellent. My reaction was visceral. I've never felt that way about a deck before. I happily re-homed it to someone who gels with it instead. I didn't like the Ceccoli tarot as much as I thought I would BUT I use it on people that I think will like it and they have ended up loving their reading so go figure? ^-^

I really like this deck, but it is kind of dark in a way; for example the little girl on the Ace of Swords eating a bleeding, weeping lollipop.
Guest Night Shade Posted September 22, 2018 Posted September 22, 2018 Oh thank goodness! I have the pantless version. I like the deck though. ::) I have the pantless version too. What's up with that; it looks like he's about to grab the knife, sacrifice the dogs, and then have his way with the kids! But I still like the deck too; any deck that features a cheetah will always be a favorite of mine.
DanielJUK Posted September 22, 2018 Posted September 22, 2018 I am glad to see the Deviant Moon come up a few other times because it freaks me out too :) I have to say that I am a horror movie fan and not sensitive in that way but also there are times with my mental health where I find things more disturbing. The artwork seems to really touch a part of me that freaks me out but I don't own a copy! I know people bought it and actually it's different from seeing it's images online. I have had a reading with it from a friend back on AT and it went straight to my shadow side, it was uncomfortable! I will probably buy it one day though but not just yet, I am not ready for it yet! Also any decks which only have positive cards, that really freaks me out! life is about good times and bad times, unless you want a positive message of the day or something, they give entirely unbalanced readings which don't represent our real phases in life! We are all going to have horrible things happen and also wonderful things at times, that wheel keeps spinning! :) <3
Grandma Posted September 24, 2018 Posted September 24, 2018 Tarot of the III Millennium definitely freaks me out... https://www.tarotforum.net/showthread.php?t=170316 ...but I love it anyway... ...with a caveat. I can only look at the cards, absorb the detailed and grotesque pictures, at a not very deep level. The artwork is incredible. But I cannot meditate with them, because they take me to scary and dangerous places, and I won't even attempt to read with this deck.

I've never felt that way about a deck before. I happily re-homed it to someone who gels with it instead. I have the tiny version of the Ceccoli, and kind of wish I'd just waited and gotten the full size one. I think it's going to take some serious work to actually read with it, but I really like it otherwise. That said, I'm a doll collector, and I've heard this referred to as the doll collector's deck! It immediately appealed to me. I like the Deviant Moon, too. I haven't yet bought a deck that truly creeps me out, but there are a couple that I just can't seem to gel with. Mostly the high fantasy style but obviously photo manipulated ones that it seems like I should love, but I just really don't like very much.

I really like this deck, but it is kind of dark in a way; for example the little girl on the Ace of Swords eating a bleeding, weeping lollipop. There were entire threads devoted to this deck at Aeclectic Tarot, where opinions got... heated, to say the least. I do find that some readers have a very visceral reaction to i, like Portia says; and I do find it more than a little dark. Besides what has been already said, there is a sort of weird, incipient sexuality in those big-headed little girls, which makes me squirm.
Wanderer Posted September 24, 2018 Posted September 24, 2018 Dominic Murphy's surreal and disturbing Secret Tarot (and Lost Tarot, mostly the same). It seems to perfectly fulfill the expectations of those who say tarot is demonic, but at the same time looks incredibly powerful... but in a direction I really wouldn't want to go. I can't imagine reading with it, and really don't want a deck myself. And yet, it does have this terrible fascination that drags your attention in. Scary. Don't google for it. Really. Well, OK, but don't say I didn't warn you.
beginagain Posted September 24, 2018 Posted September 24, 2018 The Tarot of the Imagination does this to me. The few occasions I've read with it, it's read very well, but it is disturbing and dark. The artwork is depressing; there's no other way to put it.
JessterAndrew Posted September 24, 2018 Posted September 24, 2018 I hated Deviant Moon until I discovered Patrick's Trionfi Della Luna deck and fell in love. That made me curious about Deviant Moon, and now it is my most used deck hahaha. I loved Carnival At The End Of The World, and own Le Tarot Noir, two other decks that are strange but wonderful to me. I have the Ceccoli deck, too. I do NOT like happy decks....the ones who are over positive. Well...I kept Good Tarot because I am smitten with the art, but I don't read with it. Spiritsong was soooo beautiful but was just too light for me. I like balance, or may tend towards darker decks. I'll also add that bright colors have always stressed me out, and that may be a big reason I like "dark" decks.
Essjay Posted September 25, 2018 Posted September 25, 2018 My number one is the Ludy Lescot just for that three of Swords, dead baby card. I really liked the rest of the deck but that one card just put me right of. I also totally agree with the Ceccoli deck. Seemingly so innocent but there’s horror in every card! I found it pretty but creepy and traded it away. The Wormweird. I normally like weird but I just couldn’t get past the extra- weirdness of these cards and never bought it. There was another deck that had odd, Nazi imagery that was very shocking and very stomach-turning too but I can’t remember it’s name at all.

I remember them well. :) And I agree with you. I think that's what makes me so uneasy with the deck. It's definitely a polarizing deck -- people seem to either love it or hate it. There's little in between.

The 10 of Pentacles was what really threw me over the edge with the ugly little dude pooping out a Pentacle rid of it. Maybe it's a warning not to flush your money down the toilet! :))
Jewel Posted October 4, 2018 Posted October 4, 2018 Maybe it's a warning not to flush your money down the toilet! :)) LOL actually he is pooping it into a treasure chest looking box so my guess is he plans to keep his poop! :P
Avalon Posted October 4, 2018 Posted October 4, 2018 LOL! Organic fertilizers...good for the environment.

Lay the cards out like on the floor or a large surface and you'll see the pictures go from one card onto the next card!! I use this deck especially for writer readings. It's a fascinating deck!

EmpyreanKnight Posted October 4, 2018 Posted October 4, 2018 Now that I think about it, one deck that managed to creep me out is the Ritual Abuse Tarot. It reminded me of some scary books I read as a kid lol. But looking at them now, they aren't so bad. :)
