HOLMES Posted October 5, 2018 Posted October 5, 2018 X/ at first it may seem daunting to make your own spread. I actually thought when I started out that we were not supposed to make our own spreads but was supposed to stick to old celtic cross or some other spread already made up. then I saw more spreads being put to use in tarot companions books like the Arthurian tarot by Matthews had some great ones. just doing a search for tarot spreads on amazon see about 10 to 15 books listed.. why create your own spread when there are so many awesome books ? you may not have a spread book with you (though if you download them on kindle I suppose you have supply of spreads if you order every bok ). the spread may not fit the situation despite the large choices . (if you noticed my christmas carol spread is unique,, and my abbot and Costello spread as well ). and sometimes it is fun to see what you can come up with. also this book is out of print Designing Your Own Tarot Spreads (Special Topics in Tarot Series).(I didn't read it ). and this deck is out of print. The Deck of 1000 Spreads: Your Tarot Toolkit for Creating the Perfect Spread for Any Situation I must say that for its use I never used it the way it was recommended.. I just layed them down randomly so everyone I read for got an random spread, and if a postion showed up that didn't fit like future life I would toss it down and simply pick another card. so I made some tarot spreads over time.. you can see some of them here .. some work, some needed to be reworked(through trail and error ). and some evolved over time. 1. make it logical for a true positional spread you want postion b to build on position a.. while not repeating itself in say position e. 2. keep to the theme for a true theme spread you want a spread to focus soley on vampire, you shouldnt be including angels. for chrismtas,, don't want to be including spring .. 3. keep a copy and be ready to edit it. my christmas spread evolved over time, it expanded ,,i think i took out a postion. why ? christmas carol is dear to my heart. so i wanted to create a spread that matched whhat happend when you read the story or watched the movie. 4. a spread should match its intent. what that means is you will get more if you did an awesome 6 card spread then if you did a 15 card spread trying to put every position in hells creation in it.
Mabel Posted October 9, 2018 Posted October 9, 2018 I enjoyed reading this! Thanks! Sent from my SM-S727VL using Tapatalk
BlackTarotCards Posted November 16, 2018 Posted November 16, 2018 This is great advice! To expand on point 3, I'd encourage people to embrace an iterative process. When you first use a spread you designed, there may be a few kinks to iron out, especially the more complex they are.
HOLMES Posted November 17, 2018 Author Posted November 17, 2018 that is so true,, I edited and added my Christmas carol spread over like 10 years before I was happy with it. !
Tarotphelia Posted November 18, 2018 Posted November 18, 2018 I was frustrated at first with spreads that didn't actually tell you very much or give you any constructive action to take . So I tried to make up spreads that gave some direction . Also I like to leave some positions for what is hidden , what is secret , and/or the unexpected . Those can give you information you never even thought to ask about .
chongjasmine Posted January 5, 2019 Posted January 5, 2019 Thanks for the tips! I love the celtic cross, though. Maybe it is because I am a christian.
