TarotScholar Posted December 1, 2018 Posted December 1, 2018 Mark Ryan one of the creators of the Greenwood Tarot just recently announced he's going to do a limited edition reprint of the Greenwood Tarot. No real details when its going to be released but so exciting to hear! In the description below the video he links a site to sign up for his newsletter and a link to the Facebook group!
Flaxen Posted December 1, 2018 Posted December 1, 2018 Wow! This would be amazing - I’d love to have an extra so I wouldn’t worry so much about damaging it.

TarotScholar Posted December 1, 2018 Author Posted December 1, 2018 https://www.thetarotforum.com/tarot-decks/possible-greenwood-reprint/?topicseen please read through this thread for more thoughts Yes, I'm pretty new to tarot so didn't know the history with this deck but a tarot friend told me about this forum topic. Just gave me the CliffsNotes version. I haven't had a chance to read through it all but makes me very conflicted about this reprint...will need more time and info to make an informed decision :-\
MoonGypsy Posted December 1, 2018 Posted December 1, 2018 Hello all, This is Amazing news! i am so happy for everyone who has longed for the Greenwood, which has been one of my personal favorites for the last many years. i am lucky to already have one, but as dear Flaxen mentioned--it would be BRILLIANT to have a limited edition. so i could would not have to baby my original so much! i have it in a gorgeous pouch made by the very talented Mi-Shell. She made it especially for the deck and the energy of it truly enhances the deck.
gregory Posted December 1, 2018 Posted December 1, 2018 The sad thing is that he has NO RIGHT TO DO THIS - the artwork is all Chesca's, and she holds the copyright. I happen to own a copy, but if I didn't - I wouldn't touch this. MiShell's images are posted with Chesca's permission - with no titles, as Chesca hadn't the right to those. This one is - just not OK.

Yup, this one makes me angry too. I would not sponsor this.

If you know for a fact that Chesca didn't give her permission--i definitely would NOT purchase this LE. Is anyone in touch with Chesca these days?

Does anyone know DEFINITIVELY how the artist feels about this reprint...would like to know.
Wanderer Posted December 1, 2018 Posted December 1, 2018 I suspect ilweran[/member] will know, if anyone here does... but my expectation is that it's not with permission. Ryan (much as I love 'his' Wildwood deck) seems to have been leading up to this for a little while, having previously staked a claim to having had enough input into the design that he doesn't need Chesca's permission; in fact, raising the issue and calling for challenges in advance. I'm assuming until I hear otherwise that it's unauthorised and will be acting accordingly... much as I would love to have a copy of the Greenwood to explore. :-\
gregory Posted December 1, 2018 Posted December 1, 2018 Chesca never wanted Mark to reprint it because of the appalling book he wrote. But she doesn't choose to be public any more - so I suppose he will get away with it. IF she had given her permission I have no doubt he would have said so, because he knows how we all feel about his actions thus far..
Rose Lalonde Posted December 1, 2018 Posted December 1, 2018 The interview Wanderer[/member] alluded to is here where he talks a lot about his feeling (but not copyright law) that he has enough of a right to her art. ("All that artwork was based on a lot of my experiences, and our experiences together... As far as I'm concerned, I had a lot of input"). I'm not going near it unless Chesca Potter appears and says, This is what I want.

It’s not an ethical way to behave.
gregory Posted December 1, 2018 Posted December 1, 2018 No. And I have no doubt at all that money is his main motivation. He hopes a reprint will command the kind of prices the original did. But it won't. It says quite clearly that the ARTWORK is Chesca's copyright. And whatever his "experiences" - he didn't draw one single line of it all.
River Posted December 1, 2018 Posted December 1, 2018 I like the idea of the reprint but I'm worried about the copyright issue many of you are talking about. I think I would opt for the MPC printing. Plus, this way you can have the Storyteller as a card instead of the backing image.
MoonGypsy Posted December 1, 2018 Posted December 1, 2018 So sad... If Chesca didn't give permission--i am definitely not going to support it As far as i am concerned--it is completely Chesca's Art that drew me to the deck in the first place NOT the book. If she is not on board with this--i am not.
Akuanduba Posted December 1, 2018 Posted December 1, 2018 Oh I was so happy when I saw this thread, but now I'm upset. I started learning tarot not too long ago and this is one of the decks that I wanted the most, but it's too expensive to me. I really want a new edition, but would not buy one with copyright issues... :-\
Akuanduba Posted December 1, 2018 Posted December 1, 2018 MPC printing ? Oh, I know that the artist gave permission to print for personal use, but I thought it could only be printed like in ours home printers. So if I print one deck at MPC printing, without the titles, and for my own personal use, is it ok?
gregory Posted December 1, 2018 Posted December 1, 2018 I make no comment. I have no idea. But as MPC always makes you sign that you own the artwork - I'd run with Kinkos or somewhere.
River Posted December 2, 2018 Posted December 2, 2018 Well, Chesca Potter gave permission to print the images (or have them printed, I don't see a difference) for personal use and many people have used MPC for that with good results.
gregory Posted December 2, 2018 Posted December 2, 2018 I think if we discuss that here, it makes it less of a personal thing. Just do your OWN thing and don't mention it in public, would be my advice.
Mi-Shell Posted December 2, 2018 Posted December 2, 2018 Oh well, yet another ploy to lure and harass Chesca and get his name out there in the tarot world instead of being utterly forgotten....... No, Chesca has ALL THE RIGHTS to the IMAGES and has given permission to use her images in any form people like - as long as it is for personal private use and study. Ryan has no legal rights to reprint and if he uses the word "we" he does so to mislead you into thinking Chesca or her family are involved.
gregory Posted December 2, 2018 Posted December 2, 2018 Exactly so. This is also being discussed on carto, where someone well respected who was aware of the fuss at the time has come out and blasted it all. http://cartomancy.forumotion.com/t10986-greenwood-tarot-is-being-reprinted Mark Ryan is really rather pathetic. But that doesn't make this excusable.
