Hi,

I'm going to use etching to print my own tarot deck. Does anybody know others who use manual printmaking to make their own deck?

Hi Dirk C[/member], first of all, welcome to the forum! I'm glad you've shared your deck project with us- it's stunning!! I hope you'll continue to share your progress with us. I know your work will find many fans here

Regarding your question, the deck that came to mind for me is the Brady Tarot by Emi Brady, which is done in linocut. You can see the cards here: https://bradytarot.com/pages/the-art-of-the-brady-tarot

Also, maybe check out the Alchemystic Woodcut Tarot here: https://www.schifferbooks.com/the-alchemystic-woodcut-tarot-secret-wisdom-of-the-ages-6373.html.

Both of those decks came out just last year :)

Dirk C,

You have my full attention! I'm in love with printmaking and I'm trying my hand at drypoint at the moment. I did a Majors only deck some years ago based on my own pencil drawings. I could see myself doing drypoint of those.

Are the attached your own designs? They look great. Any prints yet that you could post? And how many print runs are you planning for the edition?

Years ago on AT I wanted to buy a limited edition deck - or rather etchings of the 22 Majors (I doubt they were for reading and shuffling) - by an Italian artist whose name I forget now but whose work was very close to Picasso's. It was expensive, as it would be, and I couldn't afford it

Thank you for all your kind response!

The images are the worked zinc plates (that's why the text is mirrored). I haven't put them in acid yet, because I want to be able to make changes until I've got the entire major acana done. Also there are other technical reasons making it wiser to do them all at once. So I can't show any prints as of yet.

As of now I've got:

Emperor, Lover, Chariot, Hanged man, Devil, Judgement. (Some favorites I'll keep for last  ;) ).

Some new plates I prepared, The Pope, The Lovers and the Chariot

Really beautiful, Dirk C[/member] .  I love all the detail you put into them.

These are fantastic. I especially love the Hanged Man and Devil cards. Can't wait to see your final prints. Will you put color on them after printing, or are you running them with color? Or just plan to keep monotone?

The wonderful Bertrand Saint-Guillain makes beautiful engraved and block printed decks. His famous deck is the Triomphes de Paris XVIIth century deck, he printed it with engraving and block printing, he wanted to make it as traditionally as possible! They are expensive and limited editions and not always available (the time and work that went into them!). I bought a facsimile paper version which was in my price range and so beautiful! Some are now hand painted facsimiles. They are of course majors only.

His website is here, I recommend browsing the shop, his blog and about sections to learn so much! Also he was so nice and friendly when I contacted him some years ago to buy a facsimile. I am sure you could email him to get advice. His brand "tarotmaker" is on social networks as well, if you want to contact him on them, I follow all his news and updates on Facebook. He doesn't seem to have joined this forum sadly, he used to post updates of all his work and current projects on the old tarot forum AT. But I think he does what you are thinking about Dirk :)

Loving your deck creation Dirk  <3

Thank you DanielJUK, very interesting. That's pretty much what I meant, although he uses lino, and I use etching.
