GreatDane Posted January 27, 2019 Posted January 27, 2019 Decks you couldn't WAIT to get, then they either didn't appeal to read with or you just kind of went...Meh!... DECKS you didn't eventually go COLD on, decks you never warmed up to once you got them. Last year or so, Mystical Tarot. Fun, kind of reminded me a bit of Dali artwork. Some interesting details. But in the end...I just don't reach for it like my other tarot decks. Any HIT THE BRAKES decks you have, RECENT or OLDER?
Emilija Posted January 27, 2019 Posted January 27, 2019 Recent: The After Tarot Kit I didn't like some of the art or concepts. I wish the cards were bigger. Older: The Ancestral Path, first edition Some of the colors turned me off, and so did the borders. The good news is that the artist re-d the colors and took off the borders in her upcoming edition. The cards are also going to be bigger like the Journey into Egypt Tarot.
GreatDane Posted January 27, 2019 Author Posted January 27, 2019 Thanks for those example, Emilija. I looked them up because they sounded familiar, but I forgot what the images were like. Seeing a deck IN PERSON, and working with it, can be really different than just seeing images, so I get what you mean X/
Jewel Posted January 28, 2019 Posted January 28, 2019 It was years ago, but for me it was the Victoria Regina. I traded it away pretty quickly if I recall. I was in my "catch-all" phase and just had to have the deck. Opened it and it did nothing for me and I knew I would never ever use it or even look at it again. Even though it commands quite a price now, I am glad I traded it as it went to a home where it would be loved and used.
Raggydoll Posted January 28, 2019 Posted January 28, 2019 Mine must be Pagan Otherworlds. Everyone raves about the cardstock but I simply cannot work with it - it’s way to slippery so I drop cards constantly (I have issues with my hands so that might contribute). And while the cards are certainly gorgeous, they feel a bit flat and some just does not resonate with me. Plus it’s a bit too anemic and lacking of diversity for my liking. I was SO sure that it was a deck for me so I was really disappointed for a while.
Flaxen Posted January 28, 2019 Posted January 28, 2019 I had that with the Sasuraibito. It’s a deck which is loved by many but when I opened the box, I just felt flat. I moved it on quite quickly to another member here.
River Posted January 28, 2019 Posted January 28, 2019 The Wildwood! I saw many pictures and it looked gorgeous, but when I got it, it always felt "foreign". And the cardstock felt really bad for some reason. I swapped it. :)
GreatDane Posted January 29, 2019 Author Posted January 29, 2019 You all SO got what I meant! :) Those decks we didn't go cold on, but we got them and …...nothing. River, I had the same experience with Wildwood and I loved the art, but it got move along.
Mab Posted January 29, 2019 Posted January 29, 2019 The Gilded, for me. Beautiful art, lovely colours but when it arrived.... no. I can't read with it for toffee, either. It just doesn't speak to me.
Rupicapra Posted January 29, 2019 Posted January 29, 2019 The Tarot of the Zirkus Magi. I loved the images and had the deck on the Fool's dog app, so I had plenty of time to look at the cards. But when I got the physical deck I found that we really not zing at all. So what I'm wondering and what I would like to ask you all: those decks you didn't get on with when you first got them: do you ever come back to them after a while and find that you actually get on better with them and can work with them?
GreatDane Posted January 29, 2019 Author Posted January 29, 2019 Mab and Rupicapra - Mab, the Gilded and I didn't gel either. Another example of a lovely deck I just didn't want to read with. It just felt cold, but thought it was stunning in pix online. Rupicabra, GREAT question! OH PLEASE make a thread! I would LOVE to contribute as I have one that falls into the....I loved you online, got it, didn't love and then fell in love with! I think that is a wondrous topic!
Rupicapra Posted January 29, 2019 Posted January 29, 2019 Ok, I set up a thread, and I'm looking forward to hear/read what you think :)
PathWalker Posted January 29, 2019 Posted January 29, 2019 Ah :( The Victorian Romantic. I bought it when they did a small size, having seen it online and heard folks talk about it. I enjoy the Bohemian Gothic (same art team) when I'm in the mood, but there's never a "mood" for the Victorian Romantic. It moved on without regret.
Guest Night Shade Posted January 29, 2019 Posted January 29, 2019 I really liked the Tarot of the Old Path when I saw it in the U.S. Games catalog, but when I bought it, I was really disappointed. The Majors are lovely, but the Minors leave something to be desired.
GreatDane Posted January 29, 2019 Author Posted January 29, 2019 High five, Pathwalker! I am a BG person as well, I wanted to love the Victorian Romantic, saw images, thought I could but...alas, no way. And lovely Baba deck. But just because something has a pretty face....it's like saying if you fall in love with one sibling, you should fall in love with another :D
Saturn Celeste Posted January 29, 2019 Posted January 29, 2019 The Afro Brazilian http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/cards/afro-brazilian/ And the Ukiyo http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/cards/ukiyoe/ Because they were more of a Marseilles style and I had hoped for more artwork on the pips. So I gave my Ukiyo deck to my son and I like to look at the majors of the Brazilian deck. BUT recently I want to return to my Marseilles roots and these decks are ones I'll be working with soon. So I guess they move from GreatDane's thread to Rupicapra's thread in one paragraph! ^-^ I also have been pondering for almost a year now how to implement Hanafuda cards as a fortunetelling tool. I think the Ukiyo deck will play a prominent part in combing that deck with Hanafuda cards (tiles). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanafuda
GreatDane Posted January 29, 2019 Author Posted January 29, 2019 Hopefully one day I may do that, Saturn Celeste. I prefer illustrated pips, but so many great Marseilles style decks!
