Do fall back in love with decks?

I have a follow up question for GreatDane's thread https://www.thetarotforum.com/tarot-decks/past-the-speed-limit-then-hitting-the-braikes!-decks/msg71203/?topicseen#new where the questions was if you have any decks that you utterly fell in love with when you saw them advertised, but then when you finally had them in your hands, did not really got on with. Your HIT THE BREAK decks. No zing,no spark, no connection.

I have at least one, the Tarot of the Zirkus Magi, utterly loved it when I saw it online, still loved it in the Fool's Dog app, read the book about the Clown, when it arrived I flipped through the cards and was "meh". I did a few daily draws, it just did not speak to me at all.

Do you rekindle with the hit-the-break-decks? Is it a phase? Do you just leave them in the back of the cupboard or do you take them out again to see if it does finally zing?

Bohemian Gothic!  THIS is a fav deck, HOWEVER, not always that way.

I got the second ed years ago, actually three, and moved them on, because I LOVED the art, but even journaling with the deck, I wasn't gelling. The cardstock and size was also hard for me to shuffle, but the images themselves just not working for me.

Then I got the third ed BG.  Again, part images, part cardstock.

BUT I got the opportunity to get the first ed in a trade.  Happy day!  Now the images are still the same vibe, some are basically the same, BUT I HAD changed in the years in between and I LOVE it now.

So part was different stock, and yes, I like the first ed over other two, but really, it was ME.  TIME doesn't change a deck, but it can change us X/

I certainly have come to appreciate some decks that didn't click with me at first (I bought a lots of decks from another collection at once, so they weren't all chosen by me). I thought I didn't like them or understand them, and felt no connection, but later as I had read more I saw their symbols or messages better, and could overlook artwork that wasn't my preferred style or whatever.

Some decks I have got rid of without a problem, but one or two call to me to come back . . .  :)

To followup what I wrote in GreatDane[/member] 's thread, my hitting the brakes deck was the Tarot of the Old Path - it was really disappointing.  I haven't exactly fallen back in love with it, but I am able to use it to a degree.  The trick was to judge it on what it is, not what I expected it to be.  If you judge a deck on it's own merits, you can usually find something good about it.

I want the Tarot of the Zirkus Magi so badly!

I live in Florida and I have to periodically shuffle all my decks because of the humidity down here.  My decks are my tools for my business so I need to stay connected with them.

PathWalker, Night Shade and Saturn Celeste -

PW - our ongoing relationship with decks, I find so interesting.  Not just initial reactions, but all the stages going from there.

Night Shade - SO true about finding merits in a deck.  I haven't had any RWS style deck I COULDN'T read with, some call more than others, but like you said, almost any deck one can find merits in.

Saturn Celeste - I didn't think about that!  Of course if tarot is literally your business....

I love reading all the posts about this, probably because it has so happened to me re decks!

Thanks all for your thoughts, this is very helpful.

Especially:

The trick was to judge it on what it is, not what I expected it to be.

It’s funny, I seem to have these passionate on/off relationships with certain decks. I go through phases where they are the only deck I’m drawn to, and the suddenly I’m just ‘full’ and can’t bring myself to pick them up. The two main decks that come to mind here are my Stella’s tarot and the RWS tarot. I’ve just accepted that I’m the kind of person that needs variation.

That's really interesting, RAGGYDOLL, and adds a NEW element.  Decks you go ON and OFF with.

Just goes to show how our relationships with decks can go up, down, back again! X/
