This is one I need a lot of help with myself!

I've recently been thinking about going into the realm of doing general readings for other people (up till now, most of my readings have been for myself, usually related to relationship questions, or almost always posing a specific question to the cards about one person/career). If I were to start doing general readings for others, one of my questions is how to know when a court represents an actual person or when it's just the energy of the card?

Some people have said to use your intuition - however, I don't think I'm still fully in line with my own intuition. I know it's there and that it can be pretty strong, but I still can't differentiate sometimes between my intuition and my conscious brain. Any thoughts/advice?

I don't use tarot for prediction, so it's never made any sense to me to read court cards as though they represent actual people. That sometimes makes it difficult to read them, but i know, like, lolol, i'm a pretty solitary person and that framing would just do nothing for me. so i always prefer to read the court cards as signifying aspects of the querent, unless they specifically identify someone they're thinking of.

Hello, Night Shade

I would not interpret a coat card as denoting a specific person unless where the applicable person is directly relevant to the context of an enquiry.

Personally, I go by my intuition. But did you see the method that Lisa Boswell uses? It might be of interest for those that prefer a system to reading their courts:

It depends on the reading and what the sitter is asking.  If a sitter is asking about something that would involve other people, then by all means think of the court cards as someone.  If other people aren't involved in the sitter's question, then look to it as energy.  It does not hurt to give them alternatives.  Let them know it could be such and such a person OR it could be energy.  We are messengers of the cards.  We shouldn't be making decisions on what to tell the querent, we should be telling them everything we see in front of us and report it directly to them.

EDIT:  Relationship and family issues usually involve court cards as people.
