Queen of Cups (Everyday Witch Tarot, D.Blake & E.Alba 2017 Llewellyn)

“Listener”

Description:

Pregnant lady dressed in white is leaving an offering to the sea. She is performing a private ceremony. She carries a big seashell in her hand and the shell is filled with water. She looks calm and serene. She is barefoot, and the palm trees and dolphins show that she is on some tropical island.

From the Book (Everyday Witch Tarot, Llewellyn 2017):

-Mother, patroness, friend – generous, intuitive, kind

-Be careful not to give so much of yourself that your cup becomes empty and you have nothing left for your own needs

-Have you taken advantage of the aid she offers you?

Associations (idea from a book by Mary Greer)

Plant: willow

Animal: dolphin

Landscape: tropical island

Music: harp

Art: watercolour

Body of Water: sea

Other: mermaids, pearls

Traditional meanings (Mary K. Greer):

- Muse, enabler

This card encourages:

-Follow your intuition

-Let images flow

-Daydream or meditate

-Love

-Listen to something or someone

Warns against:

-Meddling, maudlin, hypersensitivity

-Being saccharine

-Smothering someone (see below)

-Forgetting to use your brain, not being very bright

Notes:

-She is pouring water to the ocean (water to water) which doesn’t make much sense as a ceremony.

-She is moving (walking towards the seashore) whereas the King is sedentary. Does that signify something?

-Small golden fish are jumping from the sea. Often when fish do that it is a sign of lack of oxygen in the water which is because the water is too warm. (Unless it is some “flying fish “species, of course..) -So maybe this card could sometimes warn of a smothering mother or some other caring person who is becoming too warm and suffocating?
