Page of Ghosts Posted September 6, 2017 Posted September 6, 2017 Some weeks ago I finally got Joie de Vivre, which had been on my wishlist since I started getting more into tarot about 4 years ago. I love it so much! So I wondered how does it compare to the Pauline Tarot, by the same artist? It's also on my wishlist and I'm thinking of getting it eventually. I've read the Paulina is busier than the Joie, more details in the artwork etc. Those of you who have both, what do you think?
Siavahda Posted September 13, 2017 Posted September 13, 2017 I love both, but I think the Paulina is a little darker in terms of colour scheme. The Joie is brighter. Otherwise I think they're both beautiful and compliment each other really well - the Joie's definitely my favourite, but I'm glad to have the Paulina in my collection too.

Sorry for taking a month to reply! I wouldn't mind a darker coloured deck - the Joie is very airy and bright! Is the Paulina as happy-themed as the Joie? I saw some of the gloom and doom cards were a bit changed in the Joie to be in theme with the happy nature as a deck. While I think it works well in this specific deck I can't help but like the gloom so I might have to look up a flip through of Paulina to see what those certain cards are...
Siavahda Posted October 7, 2017 Posted October 7, 2017 It's okay! I think the Paulina is a little less happy-themed, but only a bit. The more melancholy atmosphere comes from the darker colours more than the artwork, I think. So I suspect you'd prefer the Paulina, but I'd definitely recommend checking out some unboxing videos on youtube! You can see people flip through the whole decks there. (Thank all the gods for tarot vloggers!)
EmpyreanKnight Posted October 13, 2017 Posted October 13, 2017 This reminds me, Paulina Cassidy's Spiritsong Tarot is coming later this month, right?

The Joie de Vivre a very pretty deck, beautiful artwork. But I am wondering about the more "gloom and doom" cards, as you called them? How did she treat cards like the 9 and 10 of Swords, or the Tower or Devil cards? I have a couple of decks which kind of lighten the impact of those, which is okay as long as they don't lighten them too much.

While I think the changes works in this deck and its joyful theme in general I'm a bit turned off when creators change the more "difficult" cards into something more light-hearted. Give me the gloom and throw in some doom with it ;) The LWB is a bit soft (also has reversals for some inspo though so that remedies it a bit) but I think the images still could work for darker or heavy-hitting interpretation if you feel like that's more appropriate. The Everyday Witch Tarot changed the Tower to be a bit too nice imho, but I'll live as I got it as a fun, cute deck sorta like Joie. 10 of Swords: https://tarotbycecelia.files.wordpress.com/2017/07/img_1174.jpg 9 of Swords: https://tarotbycecelia.files.wordpress.com/2017/07/img_1046.jpg Tower: https://tarotbycecelia.files.wordpress.com/2017/09/img_1615.jpg Devil: https://tarotbycecelia.files.wordpress.com/2017/07/img_1044.jpg Death: https://i.pinimg.com/564x/75/73/f1/7573f1d1fb0408d64dd9ecfa0c278c01.jpg

The only one that seems to be softened a bit is the 10 of Swords ... but since it pictures someone (apparently) in mourning, it still works. I really like the other cards you linked to, the 9 of Swords definitely shows fears, The Tower shows the destruction, the characters in The Devil and Death are also very good. Guess I'll be adding another deck to my wish-list.
