Tarot Decks I've Turned Into Oracles

Featured Replies

I've turned a few of my Tarot decks into Oracles. I've trimmed them down to just images. They are:

Tarot of 78 Doors

Wheel of the Year (I use it for timing in Tarot readings, too.)

Ghosts and Spirits

Shapeshifter

Has anyone else done this?

no, but I love the idea. I watched a video where someone demonstrated edging her cards using a stamp pad. I'm thinking I'd like to trim a deck to fit in a tin.  Great idea for those busy LS decks- I find myself always very drawn to read text, so I prefer things that don't have too much extraneous text on them.

Yes!

I got a sliding paper cutter at the craft store and a rounded corners punch. They came out great! I used older decks that I had where the borders were getting yellow.

You can also get fancy shimmery ink in the paper section at the craft store to make the edges nice.

I think the decks look modern and sleek now. It works great for ones with illustrations you really love.

I'm planning on doing this with the Zillich. I can also remove the two cards I don't like as well 😄

I just need to get a new corner rounder as the highly laminated Tarot of the Cat People I was trimming has knackered mine. And I need to get some time as well!

I’m particularly pleased with the white sage tarot..

I haven't actually trimmed any decks down, but I tend to read all cards in an oracle-esque manner. I have to preface any reading I do for another reader with that info or I'll inevitably get them going on about how my reading was wrong because I pulled X card which means such & such which didn't happen... But my interpretation which deviated from the traditional meanings actually did align and they just didn't retain my words as much as their preconceived notions of the card!

If you like Lisa Hunt's artwork I actually really enjoy her Winged Enchantment Oracle deck. The visual theme is very clever.

I'll check that one out, alyce.

Other than Lenormand and Kipper, I've never really gotten much use out of oracle decks. The decks of Tarot I've trimmed and use as oracles, though, do work for me. I'm not sure why that is, but they do work very well. In the Wheel of the Year, as I said, it works for timing pretty well so far. And with the 78 Doors, I use that for insight into what new phase of life someone may be either entering or leaving or something like that. Ghosts and Spirits and Shapeshifter I haven't used yet but I'll use them in a similar way.  The Shapeshifter I expect I'll use sometimes with my Gonzalez Native American deck.

I wanted to ask if people attribute new meanings to the cards or do you still use some tarot influence when reading?

I've never used tarot cards as oracles before and would be interested in trying it. I have only one deck in my collection that I love the artwork on but just can't read with as the images and meanings never seem to work together. Will definitely think about turning it into an Oracle.

I read them intuitively and so I don’t use any set keywords, but since the images still are based on tarot traditions then it’s fair to expect that a certain amount of tarot-derived interpretations can emerge. I recommend that you at least try to completely skip the tarot associations and just look at the picture. It’s very freeing and I have found it to be very accurate too. (Just like they do it in the ISG circles here on the forum!). And when you’ve crossed that threshold you’ll soon discover that you can read with any cards, or any pictures... or with any objects. It’s an exciting journey 😀
