FindYourSovereignty Posted December 26, 2019 Posted December 26, 2019 (edited) Hi! I am new to the group and if this is posted in the wrong thread, my apologies, please feel free to move or remove as needed. In several instances it has been recommended to me that I need to look further into my shadows and, although I know decks can address several areas, I am considering getting one that focuses more on shadow work. I’d like to receive your thoughts on this deck? Emerging from Darkness Tarot Thank you! Edited December 28, 2019 by FindYourSovereignty Clarity/Subject Title update
AJ-ish/Sharyn Posted December 26, 2019 Posted December 26, 2019 you can do shadow work with any deck, I'm continually amazed at what my cards yank out of me each day. It depends on how you approach them though. I look at this deck and see nice artwork, but not the deeper tarot. the high priestess card could more likely be the empress. strength is not about just a lion but how we approach it. her 2 of swords looks like a pouty moment, not someone struggling with two serious choices, or cutting losses. mother of wands...really? pretty dresses and makeup do not a queen of swords make. I wouldn't be able to go deep with this deck in general

If I wanted to get a deck that leaned towards shadow work, is there one you would recommend?

If I wanted to get a deck that leaned towards shadow work, is there one you would recommend? what are you hoping to do/get/achieve with shadow work? There may be threads here that go more into the whole idea. Are you just trying to think past keywords? Are you trying to define your cultural footprint? What makes you happy/mad/sad/unruly? I consider my whole blog shadow work in a way 😉 Today's card has me doing mental hoop jumping from a simple Ace of Swords... is each thing I do today invoked force or natural force? It's driving me crazy. To me that is shadow work, something that makes me Think. Probably has a lot to do with how much 'work' you've done, how long your tarot journey has been, how old you are, whether you love or hate journaling of any kind.
lucksmith Posted December 27, 2019 Posted December 27, 2019 To me it seems that often we tend to "overlook" things or hide them before ourselves pretty well. Digging up that stuff is what i understand as shadow work. If the Artwork of a Deck hits some special string inside you i can imagine that it makes it easier to identify such spots to initiate work on them. However (i have not really looked into the mentioned deck, so not judging that here) if the idea of using b/w decks and/or one with some creepy or gruesome arts on it is helpful in that matter? I would think that it is more important to have a deck talking to you, no matter which direction the art tends. So my thoughts on that deck: If it speaks to you that is fine but don't get into it because you believe sort of dark artwork helps with shadow work. As AJ and reall already said, sometimes it strikes you from a deck you would expect it the least 😀

That deck in particular states 'shadow' work as its focus, hence the reason I was considering it, however, I see clearly what you and others have shared about any deck bringing awareness to areas in my conditioning I wish to work on. There are also several readers on YouTube that mention 'shadow' decks which got me thinking there are some that lean in that direction more than others. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

I am fascinated by your blog and look forward to delving deeper into it. Honestly, I don't really even know what 'shadow' work is - I am guessing it means looking at things about yourself you don't want to see or that trigger you in some way. I have had a few readings over the past 6 months that have suggested I 'have done a lot of work', but need to do my 'shadow' work - whatever that means. When I ask for more details they reply that I need to figure that out for myself. It got me thinking that I must need something extra since what I was doing wasn't quite working. I feel that I have done a lot of 'work', 8+ years of clearing although I am new to studying tarot. I am 54 and I try to love journaling, but have phases of successfully sticking with it, more not. I have started doing art each day and that has helped tremendously. Thank you for sharing.

There is no deck that you need for this or that kind of question. The trick is to learn putting meanings in context. If you enjoy looking at the art, get the deck. But there is no reason beyond that to purchase it.

I love wordsmithing, but it isn't the end all be all route for everyone. Edited December 28, 2019 by AJ-ish/Sharyn
AJ-ish/Sharyn Posted December 28, 2019 Posted December 28, 2019 coming back to say, using a tarot deck isn't the only option (well I know you know that, I'm sure there are a dozen or more books you could work through) but I wanted to add, oracles can be really powerful tools too. they can and often do have keywords, those keywords can be a universe. Tarot keywords can sometimes be limiting if you aren't adept at stepping beyond them to see where the thread goes. I say this because I chose The Shaman's Oracle for my deck this coming week and realized some of my deepest 'stuff' has been dragged to the light when I've used it over the years. It is primal, like Tarot of the Origins.
