AeonHorus Posted January 26, 2020 Posted January 26, 2020 Hi guys I have just come across this deck Heindl Tarot and was wondering on your thoughts on it? Hers what Amazon has to say about the author... Biography Rachel Pollack is considered one of the world's foremost authorities on the modern interpretation of the tarot. She is a member of the American Tarot Association, the International Tarot Society, and the Tarot Guild of Australia, and has taught at the famed Omega Institute for the past 15 years. She is an award-winning fiction writer and has also written 12 books on the tarot. She lives in New York. I've had a look at some of the images and on the surface they look nice and artsy but to me (I could be wrong) they seem to be missing all the magickal symbolisms that Crowlie and Frieda painstakingly placed into the Thoth deck. What're your thoughts ?
Rose Lalonde Posted January 26, 2020 Posted January 26, 2020 (edited) Things that stand out that you may like or dislike: it has titles on the minors, mostly influenced by the Golden Dawn, but not exactly the same (like "Mixed Happiness" on the 4 of Cups). It has Justice and Strength, but a Thothy Aeon. Hermann Haindl included runes on minors 2-10, so if you're interested in runes, how much you like that may have to do with whether you agree with his choices. Courts are figures from different cultures, like Queens Kali, Brigid, Nut, and Spider Grandmother. Overall I think they have a somber and dreamy feeling and a good bit of brown. (If you decide to get it, I recommend the older Knaur edition, which has slightly more vivid colors and is sharp. I think the USG version looks a bit muddy. But the Knaur is much larger and not in English, so ymmv.) That said, I don't read with mine often. I prefer the Thoth or the Tabula Mundi for more detailed symbolism. AJ-ish/Sharyn Posted January 26, 2020 Posted January 26, 2020 spelled Haindl. US Games, the current publishers says it is RWS. I feel it weighs in heavily on the Thoth side of the table. Your quote from Amazon is for the book author, who lived with the Haindl's gathering the information for the book. Haindl painted the majors as stand alones for the deck, and the courts I think, but the minors are taken from portions of his larger works and can be blank sheets for someone not versed in tarot, and in my experience, the Thoth. I find the bubbles thought provoking. Haindl was a POW in Russia during WWII which colored much of the rest of his life, including his paintings. There is a story behind the card back, read the book to learn about it.
gregory Posted January 26, 2020 Posted January 26, 2020 The author, Hermann Haindl, was inspired by Qabbalah, Runes, I Ching, and Native American influences for the deep and compelling artwork. Here's two excellent reviews of the DECK that might help. http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/cards/haindl/ As AJ has said - that review is of the BOOK - and certainly Pollack's books are very good - but she did NOT design the deck. That amazon page is actually quite shocking - it shows the deck, with Haindl as the author - and then has a bit about Rachel as "the author." Appalling. In the book, Rachel says: Quote The Haindl Tarot makes its own path in the Tarot world. Many of the associations used are Golden Dawn in origin, but the titles on the cards show a definite Thoth influence. As Bonnie Cehovet says: Quote I would not recommend this deck to someone new to the Tarot. Nor would I necessarily recommend it as a reading deck - most clients won't want to do the work that this deck takes. I highly recommend it to those with at least a minimal Tarot background, those who want to use it for meditation, spiritual growth, ritual, ceremony or personal readings. I agree. It is very special and has to be studied in its own right, not with the lenses of any of the "systems". It's hard work. If you are getting the deck, I'd get Rachel's books as well. https://www.bookdepository.com/Haindl-Tarot-Rachel-Pollack/9781564145970?ref=grid-view&qid=1580047842239&sr=1-5 https://www.bookdepository.com/Haindl-Tarot-Rachel-Pollack/9781564145987?ref=grid-view&qid=1580047866526&sr=1-6
gregory Posted January 26, 2020 Posted January 26, 2020 (edited) I am actually so cross that I have complained to amazon ! That really is appalling. Rachel is excellent - but that is Not Her Deck. ETAS it's even worse than I thought - if you go for "look inside" - it shows you the book. Which you will not get if you "buy" (as they do say if you look at the small print., Who does ?) What's the point of showing you something you aren't buying ? Buy it from BD instead ! as a protest if nothing else https://www.bookdepository.com/Haindl-Tarot-Deck-Hermann-Haindl/9780880794657?ref=grid-view&qid=1580048527696&sr=1-1 Edited January 26, 2020 by gregory
Arania Posted January 28, 2020 Posted January 28, 2020 One of my fav decks, and for me it was not much work at all, I just got it, although it helped reading the book. It is really abstract.
