The use of psychedelics for meditation and astral travel has been used for many centuries, look at the Souix, Navaho and other native indian tribes. Our brains grew because of  the use of psychedelics in our evolutionary path. Control.... hmmm now sometimes yes you can get out of control until you learn how to grip it and ride it. Just the same as you would when you learn to ride a bike, sometimes you wobble and sometimes you fall, but on the whole you are in total control.

I see you know your stuff.  Very solid analogy.  Without the shrooms would there even BE shamans?  I dunno the two really seem to go hand in hand...

But we're all different, I'm very much a believer of continuing with what works for you in your deepest heart of hearts, if your heart says "I don't wanna touch that stuff" DON'T.

yep!! And that is one of my main "mantra's" in life...if your heart is not into it, don't do it.

And i also would never "push" my lifestyle on other people for sure. Many of the people I hung with back in the day were not like that...and I quickly parted ways with them.

That makes me think of after I got a little older and I knew drinking was hurting me and I was trying to cut back a lot and you'd have those douche bags who for some reason felt threatened if you weren't as drunk as they were going "You GOTTA do another shot man, come on man!  If I'm doing one YOU GOTTA DO ONE"  I literally got into some fights over that crap.  I think deep down they knew they were gonna be acting like idiots and they needed everyone around them to not be able to tell or to be idiots too lol

I just wanted to pop in and say that we at TT&M do not allow discussions that promote illegal substances or drug use.

Oh?  Seemed so related to the themes of witchcraft/spiritual practice, etc etc, plus the substances mentioned are not illegal everywhere, one of them is quite legal where I live right now.  Not trying to argue just trying to explain why I didn't expect a response like this.  But alright, gotcha, no more of that.

It is a controversial topic and because we have members from all over the world it is important to remember that while something may be legal where you live, it might not be for other members.  Because of that, we do not allow such discussions.

But now, let's get this thread back on topic!

That's what strikes you as "true originality"?  Huh... I feel like that "epic droning build" vibe that plays off the same repeating chords is like... everywhere these days.  The way they did the instruments was definitely very cool but...  I dunno I feel like that's just the vibe of the times.  Pretty cool cover though!

this all leads me to think: is there really a such thing as originality anymore in music?   Given acts like GG Allin, The Art of Noise, John Cage, some of the Noise core bands etc....I think all of the extremes have been reached...we have reached extremes of speed, slowness, as many notes per pulse as possible, or no noise at all (Cage's "4:33"). We have mixed polar opposite genres; we have had lyrics with no music; music with no words; music made with non musical instruments; recordings of people dying; people dying on stage;

I honestly feel like the 1960's were a plateau of originality, and then computers and technology added the next layer, but now we are reaching the point where 1's and 0's are even being "taxed out" for what they can do...

every time some one plays me something "new/original", I can instantly name 2 or 3 artists who have already "done that"...the new material is actually just a variation on an existing theme, or a combination of already existing ingredients

maybe it is just cause I am older, and have been around long enough to see 3 or so cycles of musical/cultural trends come around. But the last era of music that I remember thinking "huh...I would have never thought of that" was the late 90's. And I actively pursue new music on a daily basis. I probably add 10 new artists to my Spotify follow list every week, but none of it is strikingly original....

I remember when my freinds and I used to joke about the speed of music...punk band X or metal band Y would come out with a D-beat at 320bpm, and we were like "No...that is it, can't be any faster than that" "Any faster, and it is just going to be static".... and now there is a whole genre of computer generated music with "beats" running around 800-1000bpm...static.  Where do we go from there?

I totally agree about the last truly original time being the 90's however some interesting things are starting to happen these days that I'd never heard before.  There's an artist named Hiyatus Kaiyote (spelling may be off) that in my opinion is just about the most original thing I've heard in a looooooong time.  And this may sound arrogant but, I can imagine what kind of genre mixing I could do that would be truly original, since I've never fully pulled off a recording to being fully what I imagine it to be I'm not sure if I could quite say I've captured it fully, but I feel like music has been stuck in this rut where the technology and the "wow" factor and in recent years the "chops" or musicality have all taken precedence over truly coming up with something outside the box that is a new vibe.

I've heard new methods of instrumentising old vibes, new ways of presenting older vibes, adding electronic elements to the older vibes etc, but not that "Whoa now THAT'S new" kinda thing.  But I can imagine it in my head, and I'd even go so far as to say in demo form I've captured it in it's idea form, but never executed it well.  Now that's not to say I could create a new genre,  I feel like the last time that happened was when rap was invented, and some of it's evolutions, but if I could just execute it right I think I could be innovative in the same way that say Beck or Soundgarden were, where you have a mixing of old and new ideas that haven't really been applied yet.  Just gotta get it together enough that I can present it's correct form.

I bet there's a lot of musicians sitting on ideas like that, I thought your band was pretty close to be honest.  That's why I said you were "innovating on the old sound".  It's a little nerve wracking to give an honest response on this because there is that fear of sounding delusional but I don't think I am, I'm sitting on something that just needs to take it's proper form.   4th day of no alcohol and it's helping soooo much, hopefully I'll have something that's current to share soon.  Here's some of the most innovative stuff I've found lately though, you tell me if I'm giving it too much credit haha

To me this is like Erykah Badu mixed with modern EDM and the vocals remind me of Aaliyah, it really GOES SOMEWHERE.  That's been my issue with a lot of recent music is that even when it's vibey, it's repetitive, this is not.   Then there's this from Brazil.  To me this isn't exactly a new sound, but it hearkens back to good radio head or...  I dunno man it's definitely doesn't strike me as "that same thing I keep hearing these days".

And then in Japan a while back there was this, this I truly can say I've never really heard anything quite like, I can compare sections of the song to certain things but put the whole thing together and I find it quite innovative.

There's another band I won't link cause that's just too many links called "Melody's Echo Chamber" and I find them to be quite special as well.  So I think we're seeing a resurgence of stuff kicking off mostly after 2012 it's just much of it is happening in other countries first.  I think America's about to see a rennaisance though personally.

Heyyy ya. I'm sad that I was not invited to the party here. Haha kidding.
I actually disappeared from the forum since i've started my new job.

You have a lovely voice! So lucky!

And it's amazing that you decided to post it. I'm totally not able to post any of my tarot videos on my facebook, where all my friends and family can see. So I can understand the struggle.

See you!

See you!

I disappeared too!!  And it's cause of my new job!!  We're soooo twinsies 😝   But thank you very much, I think I need to do some foundational work on just becoming ok with who I am before I'm gonna get this music stuff to be a real pursuit again.  After posting this and getting a reading on my music career, I've really been trying to dig in like "What am I so afraid of?"  And I've realized that it goes way deeper than music, so I've started doing shadow work and trying to really dig in and find out the root causes of my anxieties/self esteem stuff.  It's actually been going quite well, and I'm hopeful for the future.  Will let you know when I'm back to recording 🙂
