EmpyreanKnight Posted October 23, 2017 Posted October 23, 2017 What do you think about Uusi decks? Which ones are your favorite and which ones do you work with extensively? I have looked at a few of them and I agree with the general consensus: they are unbelievably alluring and oh so exquisite. The production values of their decks are on par with the very best Tarot houses too. The only quip that I've read of was that a few think that their decks have an ice queen thing going on. Like they're gorgeous and physically faultless and all that, but tho they can be very accurate, they seem to be remote and quite difficult to bond with. Is this true in your case? So yeah, what are your experiences with Uusi decks? Would you recommend them? I'm very keen to get one (or two) now.
ayuryogini Posted October 23, 2017 Posted October 23, 2017 That remoteness and difficulty to bond with: that was my experience. I love the Pagan Otherworlds; it's SO beautiful, the artwork, cardstock, magnificent....but I just can't connect with it.
Carojulie Posted October 24, 2017 Posted October 24, 2017 Hello, What you two are saying sums up exactly my fears..... I haven't got an Uusi deck yet, but I have been eying the Pagan Otherworld from afar for the last two years... and thought it is very beautiful (and is said to have exquisite cardstock, very important to me), I wonder if I would really read with it if I had it. I have several luxury decks already, I do have the Fountain, the Wild Unknown, several Baba decks, and not only their quality is high end, but also they are reliable and give great readings for me. They are amongst my favourite decks (Baba decks in particular). But I wonder if the Pagan Otherworld would read as beautifully as it looks. I often hear people rave about the production quality, and I would like to know more about the reading qualities. I realise I have too many decks already, but in spite of that, I know there is still place in my collection for decks that bring something different. But, I really would not want to aquire an additional deck that I am not going to use..... Thanks !
katrinka Posted October 24, 2017 Posted October 24, 2017 I've been looking at the Pagan Otherworlds for some time, but not buying, even though fifty bucks is not much for a premium deck. I love some of the cards - Death, for one, is amazing - but others put me off. I'm just not into hyperpagan Tarots. It's like a more skillfully done Robin Wood that way - I never bought the Robin Wood, either. I can do without a whole deck of fancy pentagrams and people running around in leaves and dead animal heads. That's my reason for passing it up. *shrugs* I don't see why it wouldn't work for someone who just loves that kind of thing. The white backgrounds look a little sterile, but they help the images pop. I'm not getting "ice queen" at all.

It's not always that I purchase a deck with a luxurious look and feel, there really is nothing quite like it. Maybe I should get more of these. The current hubbub about the Fountain makes me all the more curious about it.

I'm not getting "ice queen" at all. My ice queen comment was from what I've read from other reviews. I'm not exactly a fan of immoderately pagan decks too, but I think this one is an altogether different animal. All those elegant Renaissance folks dressed in expensive, flowing robes donning twigs or nests or what-not make me think of chic moneyed doyennes nature-worshipping cult. To be honest, it sorta makes me think of rich people slumming lol. But yeah, most people have it pegged among the most (if not the most) visually arresting decks they have. By sheer coincidence, I just watched a vid by a famous Tarot personality declaring this the most beautiful Tarot deck she has ever seen that was published this century. Also, a whole deck painted in oils? The more I look at it, the more I become enamored of it.
katrinka Posted October 30, 2017 Posted October 30, 2017 Oils ARE a big draw. It's good to know that the world hasn't totally fallen into photo collage. ;D
EmpyreanKnight Posted October 31, 2017 Author Posted October 31, 2017 I know, right? The only other Tarot artist I know of who also works with oils is Kris Waldherr, altho I think she uses watercolor more? And I absolutely love her decks - her swoon-worthy and sensuous/sensual Lover's Path Tarot celebrates the magic of un grand amour in magnificent style. It is especially well-suited for love readings, which I hope to be my forte in the future lol.
katrinka Posted December 20, 2017 Posted December 20, 2017 This one is unusual. Kind of TdM-rough with a bit of a Navajo thing going on. If you read the artist's bio, you can see how that happened. 8) I kind of like it. I don't buy Native stuff from non-Natives, but this is fusion - like jazz - not a direct rip/appropriation. https://uusi.us/collections/uusi-tarot/products/le-jeu-de-tarot-chole-marie-gaillard-for-uusi?variant=42894505352
EmpyreanKnight Posted December 21, 2017 Author Posted December 21, 2017 That is beautiful, katrinka! First deck I saw that show blue-skinned people (reminds me more of Krishna rather than the Smurfs so it's all good). It's majors-only, so let's see.
gingerblue Posted December 21, 2017 Posted December 21, 2017 I'm *just* about to buy that Oracle deck they have coming out in March- it's so beautiful.
EmpyreanKnight Posted December 22, 2017 Author Posted December 22, 2017 I'm definitely watching out for the Supra Oracle and its companion book, gingerblue. If it's really as good as it promises to be, it goes straight to my to-buy list. :D
FLizarraga Posted December 22, 2017 Posted December 22, 2017 Uusi is a class unto itself. My first Uusi deck was a Pagan playing cards one, from before they started trying their hand at Tarot decks. Which they started only recently, yet they have managed to create two of the most magnificent decks I own, the Pagan Otherworlds and the Eros. They have also managed to combine high production values with affordability, a rare feat in itself nowadays, when you just cannot find a decent independent deck under US$80. I backed their oracle, and I'm waiting for it to ship. Impatiently, I should add. :D
EmpyreanKnight Posted December 23, 2017 Author Posted December 23, 2017 Oh wow. We have the exact same Uusi decks, FLiz. I also have the Pagan Otherworlds (note to self: get the companion book too) and the Eros: Garden of Love Marseille. I also have their Pagan Playing Cards in the blue tuck box. It perfectly complements the Otherworlds, so I may have to get the Hotcakes Playing Cards so that the Eros would have an escort too.

That's a good idea! 8) There is also The Jeu de Tarot, by a French artist, and even their original Tarot deck, the BruT, which I did not particularly cared for when it first came out, yet is now sort of growing on me. Too many decks, too little money...
Guest Posted December 23, 2017 Posted December 23, 2017 wow this deck is beautiful. it has the feel of the Splendor Solis. If i was swimming in money i would have already ordered them.
EmpyreanKnight Posted January 3, 2018 Author Posted January 3, 2018 ... the BruT, which I did not particularly cared for when it first came out, yet is now sort of growing on me. I have to admit tho, even if it has playing card pips, the BruT has really captured my interest. I think I will get one along with the Supra when the latter gets a mass release.
